Steps to a Successful Audition 1. Read over this packet carefully and fill out your Audition Packet Make sure that you take a look at the commitment contract. Although we can work around some conflicts, if you will be out of town during tech week, you will not be able to participate in this production. You will need to list all possible conflicts on your Audition Registration Form. Conflicts listed on your auditions packet will be considered excused if you are cast in the show. Additional conflicts after casting must be cleared by the director. Additional conflicts may result in lost stage time and/or forfeiting your role. 2. Prepare 16 bars of a song of your choice We suggest a showtune or contemporary ballad. NO rap, hard rock, or pop songs that show limited range and skill; remember we want you to show us what you can do! An accompanist will be provided. Students are required to use the accompanist- we are looking for professionalism, especially among those auditioning for larger roles. Don t forget your sheet music. Please note that we will be enforcing the 16 bar rule. 16 bars is roughly a verse and a chorus of a song, and is plenty of material for us to hear your voice. 3. Arrive at the audition on time Our doors open 30 minutes before auditions begin. You may want to arrive a little early to beat the registration rush and collect yourself. Please be on time. Wear comfortable clothes that you can dance in. You will be asked to sing the 16 bars you have prepared. Everyone will learn a short dance combination that you will perform in a small group. 4. Check you email for the Callback List You will receive an e-mail with a list of who is needed at callbacks by late Thursday evening, August 30 th. Callbacks will take place from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday, August 31 st and from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM on Saturday, September 1 st. Please be prepared to be present at both callback dates if needed. Remember, if you aren t called back, it doesn t mean you don t have a part in the show. 5. Check the blog for the Cast List The cast list will be sent out on Saturday via email.

! Q and A Q: How is the Fall Production different than the Spring Production or Theater Camp? A: Our 1-12 Fall production is geared towards challenging all cast members to move to the next level. Lead roles provide opportunities for our older cast members, while more difficult dance routines and vocals stretch our ensemble to become stronger performers. We choose a more challenging script, with a longer run time. As the depth of the material increases, we expect our cast to adopt a more professional attitude during rehearsals. There is also a higher level of expectation regarding theatre skills- our Fall production is the time when we gently but consistently push our cast members to become better actors, dancers, singers, and people. We aim for a higher artistic quality because we have older and more experienced cast members carrying the show. Due to the length of the show, rehearsals during tech week will also run later, as will performances. We do our best to let the little ones head home as early as possible, though we do expect even our all cast members to stay until curtain call during the performances. Q: Why 1-12? Why not just keep the ages separated? A: Here at Haven, we value intergenerational friendships between students. We love seeing our older students mentoring our younger cast members, both in theater skills and in character. Being in a cast with older students both inspires and pushes younger cast members. In turn, having a younger set of cast members around fosters a sense of responsibility in the older students. So, although we recognize that there is a vast difference in the performance abilities of a kindergartener and a senior in high school, we find that putting all ages in one cast helps to develop this invaluable intergenerational community. Q: How will I know when my child is called to rehearsal? A: Each cast will be divided into different Casting Groups. Each Casting Group will always rehearse at the same time every week until performances get closer. Your child may be called for more that one slot per week depending on his or her role. Please be aware that the same Casting Group from each Cast will rehearse at the same time, but not always in the same room. For example, our Elementary Ensemble for both our Magic Mirror Cast and our Enchanted Rose Cast will be called Tuesdays from 4:00-6:30, but they wont be running the same material in the same room. So, if you look at the schedule and see Elementary Ensemble, and your child belongs in that Casting Group, you will know that they are called to rehearsal regardless of which Cast they are in. The only time Casts will be called separately is during tech week, so please read your schedule and blog updates carefully. Q: My child is on the younger side of the 1-12 age range. What part should they audition for? A: is an excellent show because there are multiple opportunities for small solo parts and cameo roles. We do encourage our younger cast members to prepare themselves by remembering that it is common in our fall production for our older cast members to carry the show. Most of the leads go towards our high schoolers, or students who have more experience in theatrical performance. We are,

however, looking to cast Chip as Elementary School age, so if your 1-5 child is looking to audition for a larger role and is willing to deal with some fierce competition, we invite them to go for it. In addition, there are several singing solos and speaking parts that we are open to casting younger as well. Q: Why are you double casting the entire cast for Fall show? I thought the Spring Show was the only time you had two separate casts? A: By double casting our entire casts like we do during our Spring productions, we aim to create an environment that is calm, focused, and geared towards more one on one interaction with instructors. Haven is about investing in the lives of our students, and having large casts can often interfere with this goal. Smaller casts also give Directors and Choreographers the freedom to give cast members more stage time than they would normally get in a large cast because stage space is longer an issue. Although double casting cuts in half the number of performances each child has, it in turn allows the student to have more stage time and solo opportunities within his or her cast s performances. We are extremely proud and thrilled that Haven is a fast-growing theater company, but we never want to be a program that simply puts its students up on stage without being involved in the personal and artistic growth offstage. Double casting our fall show is a step Haven is taking to ensure that our goal of community does not fall by the wayside as our company continues to grow.
