TAPESCRIPTS Kompetent AUFSTEIGEN Englisch 2 Astrid Berger/Gabriele Broniowski Listening Comprehension 1 A: Hi, Tom! B: Hi, Mary! A: How were your holidays? B: They were super! I was in Italy with my parents, my sister and my cousin Paul. A: Cool! Were you at the seaside? B: Yes, we were in Bibione for a week. We stayed at a small hotel near the beach. That was nice because we could go swimming whenever we wanted to. A: Great, I m sure you had good weather all the time. Am I right? B: Well, most of the time. There was one day, which was not so nice. It was cool and rainy. But all the other days were great. The sun was shining and it was really hot. My little sister, Paul and I spent most of the time at the beach. Paul and I helped Lisa to build a very big sand castle. We went snorkelling too, which I really liked. But we didn t see too many fish. A: Sounds as if you had a wonderful time! Did you go anywhere else in Italy or did you only stay in Bibione? B: No, after a week at the seaside my parents wanted to do some sightseeing. So we went to Venice for two days. A: Wow! B: Yeah, that was really something. Just imagine, there are no cars. If you want to get from one place to the other and you don t want to walk, you go by boat. Even the taxis are boats. A: Yes, I ve seen it on TV. B: Venice was cool but there were so many people! When we wanted to see the famous church I think it s called St. Mark s Basilica we had to wait for 40

minutes, because there were so many tourists. I hated the waiting. You can t imagine how hot it was. A: Poor you! Was the church beautiful? B: Well, it was nice. But it was so hot! Lisa, Paul and I only wanted a cold drink and an ice cream. A: Italian ice cream! Was it good? B: It was delicious! We all loved it. A: So, you had a good time in Italy? B: Yeah, it was super! But next year my parents want to go somewhere, where it is not so hot in summer, to England. Listening Comprehension 2 This year I had the most terrible Halloween ever. First I wanted to have a Halloween party at our house but my parents didn t want that. They said it was too loud. Well, okay. Then Lisa invited me to her party and I was really looking forward to it. I wanted to dress as a vampire, with long teeth, a white face and blood around my mouth. Not real blood, of course! On the evening of the party I was excited. My costume looked great. At Lisa s place there were lots of strange creatures. There was Tina dressed as a witch. She had a black hat, a long nose and a broomstick. First I was not sure who the scary ghost was, but then I saw that it was Thomas, Lisa s brother. He looked really scary! Then there was a terrible zombie with blood all over his face. He looked horrible and we were all a little afraid. But then we found out that it was Lisa s uncle. There was a lot of wonderful food. I ate pizza, and drank blood orange juice. Then there was this delicious chocolate cake. I think I had too much of it because suddenly I felt very strange. Look, the vampire s face is turning green! Lisa laughed. But I didn t feel like laughing. I was so sick! The others were having fun playing games and dancing, but I only wanted to go home and lie down. I called my dad and he came and took me home.

Listening Comprehension 3 I read this incredible story about Tami, the gorilla. She lives in a zoo in America. One day Jamie, a little boy of 3 years went to the zoo with his parents. When they were at the gorilla park the little boy fell over the fence. He landed on his head and was badly hurt. The police and the people in the zoo did not know how to get Jamie out of the gorilla park. Gorillas are friendly as long as they have a space that is their own, but they are usually not very friendly when you enter their space. So nobody wanted to go into the gorilla park because they were afraid of making the animals angry. Then something amazing happened. Tami, one of the gorillas, went to Jamie and took the little boy into her arms. The people were shocked because they did not know what Tami would do. But Tami did not want to harm the little boy. She carried him to the door. There she put him on the ground and the people working in the zoo and a doctor could get to him. They took him to the hospital and soon Jamie was better again. Today he knows that Tami saved his life. Sometimes he goes to the zoo to see her. Listening Comprehension 4 Dialogue 1 A: Excuse me, I m looking for the police station. Can you tell me where it is? B: No problem. We are in front of the church now. You walk straight on, go past the restaurant and then take the first street on the right. That s Liverpool Street. Go down Liverpool Street and take the first left. At the corner there is the library. Next to it there is the police station. A: Thank you! B: You are welcome. Dialogue 2 A: Excuse me, do you know where I can find a bookstore? B: Yes, of course. We are at the supermarket now. Just walk straight ahead for about 300 metres. Miller s bookshop is at the right side of the street. A: Thank you. And how do I get to the station from the bookshop?

B: Well, let me think. Ah, Yes. Cross the street and turn right into Oxford Street at the library. Go straight ahead. When you are at the end of Oxford Street you can already see the station. It s in Oak Street. A: Okay, thank you so much. B: No problem! Listening Comprehension 5 Last month Carol s class spent a week in the country. They had a really great time. They did lots of different things. The weather was nice and the children spent most of the time outdoors. They played volleyball and tennis, went horse riding or mountain biking or they went swimming in the lake near their hotel. They had a lot of fun playing with their friends and their teachers were really nice, much nicer than at school. They told the children that there was a surprise waiting for them in the wood near the hotel but they would have to find it. One day Carol and her best friend Sally went for a little walk because they wanted to be alone. Sally wanted to talk to Carol about Peter who was being mean to her all the time. He always called Sally a silly cow and made fun of her. Sally was unhappy and didn t know what to do. The girls were just making plans of how to stop Peter, when Carol saw something on the ground near an old tree. Look! she shouted. What s that? Quickly they ran to the tree and saw a key lying in the grass. Wow, this looks very old, Sally said. She was right, it was an old key. Do you think someone lost it? Carol asked. Maybe, Sally said slowly. But do you remember the old hut we saw yesterday? Just five minutes from here. When we wanted to open the door we couldn t because it was locked. Perhaps this is the key to the hut. The two girls were very excited. Let s find out! Maybe there is something interesting there. Carol said and started running towards the old hut. When they were both at the hut Carol tried to put the key into the lock and really, it fit. Carol turned the key and the door opened. Slowly the two girls went in and looked around. They were in a small room. There was a table with 4 chairs and on the table there was a wooden box. I wonder what s in that box, Lisa said and opened it. Inside there was a

piece of paper with the following words: Congratulations! You are the first to find the treasure. Go back to the hotel and give this paper to one of your teachers. They will give you your prize. Sally and Carol were so happy! When they showed the piece of paper to their teacher, she gave them a big box of chocolates. Ha, Sally said, I wonder what Peter will say now. I m sure he won t laugh at me. And he won t get any of my chocolates! Listening Comprehension 6 A: Hi, Marcus! B: Hi, Anna. A: Marcus, what s your favourite subject at school this year? B: Well, let me think. It s history. It s a new subject. A: What s your favourite period? B: I like the time of the old Greeks and Romans best but ancient Egypt is pretty cool too. A: Yeah, the ancient Egyptians are really interesting. We talked about them too. Did you know that many of them were farmers? B: Yes, I do. Last summer holidays my family went to Egypt for a week. We went to see the pyramids too. I took lots of photos of the pyramids. A: Have you ever been to Athens or Rome? B: Yes, I have been to Rome. I love the old buildings there. My dad took me to the Roman Forum, that s the old market place where people used to meet. I wish I could go back in time and see how people in ancient Rome really lived! A: Yeah, that would be cool. But we already know a lot about how people lived back then. My sister learns Latin at school and in the texts they read there is a lot of information about how people lived, what they ate and how they spent their days.

B: I know. We also have a lot of information about the ancient Greeks. In the theatres you can still see plays written by Greek playwrights. They ancient Greeks loved the theatre. Did you know that all the roles were played by men? They wore masks and platform shoes. A: Well, life was definitely not boring, even if they did not have computers or TV. Listening Comprehension 7 My name is Molly. I am an only child. My parents split up when I was five. I would like to have a brother or a sister. I think it would be fun to do things together. My best friend Nina comes from a big family. She has three brothers and one sister. She says it is sometimes difficult to have so many siblings because there is always a lot of noise. She doesn t have her own room, she has to share it with her sister. Her sister is two years younger. Her three brothers are older than Nina. One of them has moved out already. He now lives in Vienna where he attends university. Nina s brothers sometimes help her with her homework or do fun things with her. Nina says her mum is always busy. She has to cook, do the shopping and do the washing for six people. Nina s dad helps at the weekend ad of course the kids have to do chores too! I m lucky because I do not really have to help with the housework. Well, sometimes I load the dishwasher or go shopping but that is fun! When mum comes home from work, we always have a little chat. We have dinner together and I tell her about my day. Nina says her parents spend a lot of time taking them to different places as public transport in their area is really bad. Well, maybe having a large family isn t that much fun, at least for the parents!

Listening Comprehension 8 Henry and Emma are twins. But they are not only twins, they are also young wizards. That s why their parents sent Emma and Henry to Merling, a school for young wizards. It s the twins first year at Merling. They love the school but the lessons are not always easy. First they had to learn how to use a magic wand. If you wave it too much, or not enough, your spell might not work. Emma loves making potions. Potions are magic drinks. With the right potion you can change yourself into an animal or become invisible. When you are invisible nobody can see you. Then you can play tricks on other people. Henry loves riding his magic broom. He is really good at it. Of course, he is also on the school s Broomball team. At the end of the semester Henry and Emma have to take some exams. They have to know important spells by heart. They also have to do things with their magic wands. At Merling the children also learn about magical plants and creatures. Some of the plants are really dangerous because they are poisonous. Henry loves the lessons about magical creatures. He would like to have a magical creature as a pet but his parents think he is not ready to look after a magical pet. Listening Comprehension 9 Dialogue 1 Laura: Hi Tim! Why are you limping? Tim: Well, yesterday I was riding my bike. Suddenly the car in front of me stopped and I had to brake hard. I don t know what happened but I fell off the bike and hurt my ankle. Laura: Poor you! Did you see a doctor? Tim: Yes, I went to see a doctor but thank God the ankle isn t broken. It just hurts a lot.

Dialogue 2 Monica: Clara: Monica: Hi Clara! What happened to your arm? Well, yesterday I went for a walk with my dog Molly. On the path there was a hole. As I was watching Molly I didn t see the hole and fell down. I fell on my arm and it really hurt. At the hospital they found out that my arm was broken. Poor you! Now you can t play tennis with me on Saturday. Dialogue 3 Mike: Diana: Mike: Diana: Mike: Hi Diana! You look very tired. What s the matter? I ve got a terrible headache. I think the weather is going to change. But you look tired, too Mike. What s wrong with you? I ve got earache. I went swimming on Sunday and I have had earache ever since. I hope you will feel better soon! You too! See you later. Listening Comprehension 10 In Brian s class many children have got pets. Brian s best friend Simon has got a dog. His name is Merlin. Brian and Simon often play with Frederick or take him for a walk. Brian would love to have a dog too but he and his parents live in a flat with no garden. Brian s pet is a little rat. Brian says that rats are very intelligent animals. Simon s dog Frederick is white and brown. At night he sleeps in Simon s room. Simon has to look after his dog, that means he also has to feed him. He feeds him twice a day. Sometimes Simon takes Frederick down to the river because Frederick loves water. Simon also has to brush his dog. The vet told him that he has to keep the dog s hair clean.

Brian s rat is grey. Her name is Rhonda. At night Rhonda sleeps in a little cage next to Brian s bed. During the day Rhonda often hides in Brian s sweater. She likes to be close to his warm body. Brian feeds Rhonda twice a day. Sometimes Brian takes Rhonda to school. Some of the girls in his class are too scared to touch her. The boys sometimes play with her. Brian takes Rhonda to the vet regularly. He also cleans her cage every other day. He knows that when you have a pet you have to take good care of it.
