Liquid Level Sensor, U Introduction U liquid level sensor can be used to measure the liquid level of many different refrigerants in vessels, accumulators, receivers, level columns, etc. Cable Version Coaxial Version The U liquid level sensor is based on a proven techhology called Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) or Guided Micro Wave. The electrical output is a 2-wired, loop powered 4-20 ma output signal, which is proportional to the refrigerant liquid level. Dust, foam, vapour, agitated surfaces, boiling surfaces, changes in density or in the dielectric constant, εr, for the liquid have no influence on the U performance. Oil accumulated in the bottom of a level column will not disturb the liquid level signal and it is not necessary to remove U for cleaning after oil has been drained out of the level column. Features One part number in the cable version is used for any probe length in the range of 31.5 in. to 197 in. (800 mm to 5000 mm) Cable version requires less top-end clearance for installation and service Proven operation with all refrigerants in combination with oil. No need to clean cable version when fully covered by oil. The cable version is very compact and easy to handle, ship, install and use with different lengths and refrigerants 2-wire loop powered Display interface units can be in mm, cm, m, ft, in. For further details regarding mechanical and electrical installation please refer to the product instructions PI.SC0.D (CABLE version) and PI.SC0.E (COAXIAL version). Product concept U is available in two different versions: Cable version Coaxial version The cable version is used for lengths from 31.5 in. (800 mm) and up to 197 in. (5000 mm) and is suitable for HCFC, Non flammable HFC and R717 (Ammonia). The U cable version should NOT be used for CO 2 or marine applications. The coaxial version of U is designed for use with R744 (CO 2 ), HCFC, Non flammable HFC and R717 (Ammonia). The U coaxial version should always be used for marine applications for all refrigerant types. Danfoss A/S (AC-SMC / MWA), 2013-11 DKRCI.PD.SC0.C4.22 / 520H5916 3

Liquid Level Sensor, U Product concept (continued) Cable version U cable version must ALWAYS be installed in a level column. Danfoss M84H0001_1 Cable version The cable version consists of: Signal converter Mechanical process connection with 5 m (197 in.) ø2 mm (0.08 in.) stainless cable Counterweight Accessory bag comprising: 3 mm set screws Red cover to protect mechanical process connection prior to mounting signal converter. Setting label. Note: If the level column is not within 2" to 4" in size, the coaxial version should be used. Coaxial version Coaxial version can be installed in a level column (a) or directly in a vessel (b). a b Coaxial version The Coaxial version consists of: Signal Converter Mechanical process connection with 5 m (197 in.) Ø2 mm (0.08 in.) stainless steel wire Tube(s) depending on required length Accessory bag comprising: End Connector (incl. 3 mm (0.12 in.) set screws.) 3 mm (0.12 in.) set crews (1 set screw pr. tube) Red cover to protect mechanical process connection, before Signal Converter is mounted. Liquid Level Sensor, U Measuring principle (Cable and Coaxial) 1. An electromagnetic (EM) pulse is transmitted by the signal converter 2. The pulse goes down the probe at the speed of light in air, V1 3. The pulse is reflected 4. The pulse goes up the probe at speed, V1 5. The converter receives the pulse and records the signal 6. The EM pulse moves at speed, V1 7. Transmitted EM pulse 8. Half of this time is equivalent to the distance from the reference point of the device (the flange facing) to the surface of the product 9. Received EM pulse The U electronic converter emits lowintensity, high frequency electromagnetic pulses with a width of approximately 1 nanosecond, which travel at the speed of light along the probe (wire or coaxial cable) down to the liquid surface. The pulses are reflected by the liquid surface, guided back along the probe, and received and analysed by the U electronic converter and then converted into a liquid level reading. This method is called time domain reflectometry (TDR) or guided microwave. The dielectric constant, εr, of the liquid is a key parameter and has a direct impact on the degree of reflection of the high frequency electromagnetic pulses. Liquids with high εr values, such as ammonia, produce strong reflections, while liquids with low εr values, such as CO2, produce weak reflections. As long as the εr value of the liquid refrigerant is higher than 1.2, U can detect the liquid level and level measurement accuracy is not affected. If the temperature condition in the level culomn/ vessel is known, a dielectric constant of the refrigerant gas can be entered in U (parameter 2.5.3 GAS EPS.R), in order to improve the Dead Zone of probe. Refer to pages 7 to 8 for Measuring range of AKS 4100U - CABLE version and COAXIAL version. For details of gas constant values for different temperatures and refrigerants plus the procedure for entering these via the HMI, refer to pages 18 to 19. Liquid Level Sensor, U Measuring range and installation information CABLE version Because the cable version can be trimmed to the desired length during installation, it is required to record the following values on the setting label (included with probe) and stick the label on the signal converter for later use when programming: Probe length. The probe length can be trimmed to the desired length within the range of 31.5 in. and 197 in., but must allow a minimum clearance of 0.8 inches/20 mm from the bottom of the level column. Length to 4 ma setting. For a max. measuring range this length = Probe length bottom dead zone (given in tables) 1.3 inches/33 mm (counterweight height) Length to 20 ma setting. For the max. measuring range this length will be 4.7 inches/120 mm Note: The above lengths must be programmed into the U for the sensor to work. For most applications the bottom dead zone value can be taken from the table that is based on the factory setting for the dielectric constant, but if the refrigerant temperature is known, the dielectric constant can be changed to improve the measuring range (see appendix1 and table with improved bottom dead zone value). Liquid Level Sensor, U Measuring range and installation information COAXIAL version The coaxial version can be ordered in various predefined probe lengths but can be cut to a desired length during installation. Therefore, it is best to record the following values on the setting label (included with probe) and stick the label on the signal converter for later use when programming: Probe length. The probe length can be cut to the desired length but must be a min. length of 19.2 in./488 mm and allow a minimum clearance of 1.2 inches (30 mm) from the bottom of the level column. Dielectric constant only needs to be changed for CO 2 applications (see appendix1). For other refrigerants, the bottom dead zone can be taken from the table that is based on the factory setting of the dielectric constant. Length to 4 ma setting. For a max measuring range this length = Probe length bottom dead zone (given in the tables). Length to 20 ma setting. For the max measuring range this length will be 4.7 inches/ 120 mm.
