Factors that Affect Graphc Performance Lfe The actual performance lfe of a graphc s affected by: the combnatons of graphcs materals used. complete nk dryng or curng. selecton, condton and preparaton of the substrate. surface texture. applcaton methods. angle and drecton of sun exposure. envronmental condtons. cleanng or mantenance methods. Graphcs Manufacturng! CAUTION Before usng any equpment, always read the manufacturer s nstructons for safe operaton. Inkjet Prntng Always read and follow the nk manufacturer s wrtten nstructons on usage. Sheeted flm: When used on a flat-bed nkjet prnter, sheeted flm may produce prntng defects. Ink lmtng: The recommended maxmum nk lmt s 250%. If sheeted or stacked graphcs wll be stored: If you plan to store sheeted and stacked fnshed graphcs for an extended perod of tmes, leave an unprnted margn (about 1/4 nch) to allow for possble shrnkage before trmmng the graphc. Do not exceed the recommended total nk coverage for the nk seres used on ths flm. Havng too hgh a total physcal nk amount on the flm results n meda characterstc changes, ncomplete dryng, overlamnate lftng, and/or poor graphc performance. 4 Product Bulletn 40C Revson D
Completely Dry Graphcs Incomplete dryng can result n graphc falure ncludng curlng, ncreased shrnkage and adheson falure, whch are not covered under any 3M Graphc Warranty. Cuttng See the nk s 3M Product and Instructon Bulletn for more detals. See 3M Instructon Bulletn 4.1 for Sheetng, Scorng and Flm Cuttng detals. UV nkjet nks may crack f too much heat s used durng graphc applcaton to complex curves and deep contours as well as around rvets. When usng heat durng applcaton, make sure the flm surface temperature does not exceed 212 F (100 C). For best results, always do a test applcaton of a prnted graphc to determne how much heat can be used wthout damagng the mage. 3M recommends usng addtonal heat n the post-applcaton process for vehcle graphcs. Durng ths process, 3M only recommends usng a heat gun to make sure the flm surface temperature reaches a mnmum of 200 F (93 C) and does not exceed 225 F (107 C). Product Bulletn 40C Revson D 5
Pressure-actvated Adhesve The pressure actvated adhesve on ths flm offers: smooth sldng nto poston on a substrate; fast fnger tackng to check poston; and easy snap-up and repostonng when you need t. The snap-up and reposton feature s lost: when frm pressure wth a squeegee or other applcaton tool s appled. at applcaton temperatures above 100 F (38 C) even f only lght fnger pressure was used for tackng. f any part of the flm s removed from the orgnal lner and reappled to the same or another lner. solvent from nkjet nk has not completely dred or cured, whch affects both sldeablty and snap-up. Workng wth Ar Release Channels Ar release channels are a characterstc of flms wth Comply adhesve that allow trapped ar to ext through the edges of the graphc. The channels wll be damaged and effectve ar removal affected f you remove and attempt to change lners or reapply the same lner. For the best results, always work from the center out to the edges of the graphc to allow trapped ar to ext through the ar release channels. If the channels are closed off by frm pressure and ar s trapped, use an ar release tool to ad n removng ar bubbles. See 3M Instructon Bulletn 5.4 for detals. Vdeo Clck here to see how 3M s Comply adhesve technology works. Workng wth Rvets Ths flm wll tent when appled over rvets. If the rvets are closely spaced, the flm wll brdge between rvets. Tented or brdged flm may fal prematurely. For the best appearance and durablty, 3M recommends cuttng around the rvet, removng the crcle of flm, and then re-squeegeeng around the rvet 6 Product Bulletn 40C Revson D
Flm Lftng and Tentng Flm 40C s an excellent choce for graphcs appled to flat and smple curved surfaces, and even rvets f tentng s not a concern. 3M feels t s mportant for you to understand the challenges of usng ths flm on complex surfaces to ensure both you and your customer are satsfed wth the results. Flm 40C s not hghly conformable, meanng t has a memory for ts orgnal shape. It s nota good choce for complex curves, deep channels, severe contours, or corrugatons. Even wth the use of prmer, heat, tools and advanced nstallaton sklls, the flm s lkely to lft or tent, ether durng the applcaton or wthn hours or days of the applcaton. The followng photos show the rsk of applyng flm 40C to complex surfaces. Product Bulletn 40C Revson D 7
Mantenance and Cleanng Use a cleaner desgned for hgh-qualty panted surfaces. The cleaner must be wet, non-abrasve, wthout strong solvents, and have a ph value between 3 and 11 (nether strongly acdc nor strongly alkalne). See 3M Instructon Bulletn 6.5 for detals. Removal Removal may requre heat. The ease and rate of removal depends on a number of factors. See 3M Instructon Bulletn 6.5 for detals. Shelf Lfe, Storage and Shppng Shelf Lfe The shelf lfe s never more than 2 years from the date of manufacture on the orgnal box. If you process the flm, the shelf lfe s changed to 1 year from the processng date, but not later than the 2 year maxmum from the manufacturng date. Storage Condtons 90 F (32 C) maxmum Out of sunlght Clean, dry area Orgnal contaner Brng the flm to prnt room temperature before usng Shppng Fnshed Graphcs Flat, or rolled prnted sde out on 6 nch (15 cm) or larger core. Ths helps prevent the lner, f used, from poppng off. Health and Safety! CAUTION When handlng any chemcal products, read the manufacturers contaner labels and the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for mportant health, safety and envronmental nformaton. To obtan SDS sheets for 3M products go to 3M.com/SDS, or by mal or n case of an emergency, call 1-800-364-3577 or 1-651-737-6501.
