BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS April 2017 Dean: Mike Maiden dean@kcago.com Sub-Dean: Stephanie Henry shenry24@kc.rr.com Bombarde Editor: Keith Sandrock bombarde@kcago.com FROM THE DEAN Look beyond winter to the spring that inevitably followed, bringing back color and life and hope. Mary Balogh Spring is my favorite season. I love all of the changes that this season brings, as the author states: color and life and hope. And with spring comes the celebration of Easter, so aptly observed during spring as one then can also celebrate life and hope (and of course color with those brightly decorated eggs!). But, the celebration of Easter for church musicians is a crazy, busy and hectic season. As you prepare for your celebration of Easter, make time to enjoy that message of life and hope, and let the music reveal that. This beautiful time of year should be relished and shared in every manner that we can. Happy Spring! She will continue to serve Community of Christ in a much-reduced but complementary role, including overseeing the care of the two magnificent pipe organs at the denomination s headquarters. She has served as the Principal Organist for Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) for the past 18-1/2 years, since the retirement of John Obetz in August 1998. To read more about Dr. Jan Kraybill s new position, click here. HELP IS NEEDED FOR OCTOBER MEETING 2 P age

Call for organists to participate in our October Meeting s, Celebrating Luther and The 95 Theses. Pieces based on Ein Feste Burg for presentation. Atonement Lutheran Church. The application form must be submitted by April 1, 2018. There are two sections to the exam. Section 1 is Practical work in which the candidate rehearses and directs a choir of at least four singers that will be provided at the examination center. The candidate rehearses and conducts 3 anthems listed in the Choir Master requirements. In addition to rehearsing a choir, the candidate demonstrates keyboard ability by harmonizing a melody, playing harmonic progressions at the piano or organ as directed, and playing a hymn from the 2013 Revised Examination Hymn Booklet. Section 2 involves paperwork tests of Ear Tests, Analysis, Gregorian Chant, Hymnody, Liturgy, Choir Training, Choral Repertoire, and General Musical Knowledge. Consult www.agohq for details and resources. The July issue of TAO will have the requirements for 2017-2018. Contact Claudette Schiratti, AAGO cschiratti1@gmail.com, Certification Chair, KCAGO DIRECTORY UPDATES SINCE PUBLICATION Since the publication of our chapter s membership directories earlier this fall, there are several members that have updated their contact information. Chloë Stodt has included the most recent, upto-date list for us. You can find this list at the very end of this month s newsletter to print and file with our current directory at your convenience. ORGANISTS NEEDED AT COMMUNITY OF CHRIST HEADQUARTERS Be a staff organist at Community of Christ Headquarters! Volunteer staff organists provide music for daily Prayer for Peace services year-round, and 30-minute organ demonstration recitals held in The Temple in Independence, MO, at 2:30pm each Sunday except in June and July when they occur daily. Though the audiences for our music-making may be small, they are very appreciative, and the side benefits are great: staff organists receive a keycard to access The Auditorium's 113-rank Aeolian-Skinner and The Temple's 102-rank Casavant, and the opportunity to schedule practice on these two magnificent instruments 24/7! There are also occasional opportunities for paid gigs, such as playing for the many graduations hosted at The Auditorium each May. If you're interested in auditioning to join us, or for further information, contact Jan Kraybill at jkraybill@cofchrist.org. 3 P age

AGO PILOT PROJECT CHURCH MUSIC INSTITUTE This is another invitation to participate in the Church Music Institute's pilot project providing free access to AGO members in three chapters, including Kansas City. The Guild is always searching for ways to serve its constituency better and to identify new and helpful benefits for AGO members. Because the overwhelming majority of our members are employed in sacred settings, we are working with the Church Music Institute to give you free access to CMI s elibrary, a reference database of more than 10,000 titles of choral anthems. These anthems are searchable on 24 criteria, including scripture, lectionary reference, and type of accompaniment. CMI and the AGO have agreed to offer the elibrary as a membership benefit, free of charge, to all AGO members in our chapter as part of a pilot program, with the ultimate goal of offering it to the AGO s entire membership. You may enroll by copying the following web address into your browser https://www.agohq.org/elibrary-cmi-ago-pilot-project-enrollment/ to complete the online sign-up form. Access to the elibrary will be provided in a confirmation email message to you containing your password within two business days of your enrollment. Please make time to take advantage of this wonderful benefit provided to us by the National office. KU FACULTY TO PRESENT SPRING RECITALS FEATURING NEW CD PROJECTS On Friday, April 7th at 7:30 p.m. Michael Bauer, Professor of Organ and Church Music at the University of Kansas, will present a recital of the complete organ works of Johannes Brahms at the Bales Organ Recital Hall located on the Northwest side of the Lied Center at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Less well known is the impact the First World War had on Kipling and how it irrevocably changed his family. In this new oratorio, American composer John Muehleisen explores the costs of war from the point of view of the families left behind. Weaving letters, prose and poetry into a one-hour passion setting, the work explores 5 P age

how the devastated Kiplings find peace in the wake of son John s September 1915 death at the Battle of Loos at age 18. Scored for soprano, tenor, and bass soloists with choir and chamber orchestra, this moving world premiere shines a new spotlight on the sacrifice of not only our warriors, but their families.
