Library Media Services Finding, Using & Downloading e-books version 20170424. Contact: library.ref@johnabbott.qc.ca Overview In mid-2017, four fifths of JAC Library s books are e-books, about 250 thousand out of a total of 310 thousand items. The College provides access to 120 thousand e-books in all academic subjects via Ebsco Academic Collection, 40 thousand college-level, medical and nursing e-books via ebrary College Complete, and four thousand scholarly titles in the Canadian Publishers Collection. The library s licences permit unlimited, concurrent, online viewing and downloading of these e- books for JAC users. This guide demonstrates how to search for, use, and download e-books from the JAC Library catalogue. FINDING e-books 1. Whether you are searching for print books or e-books, always begin from the JAC library catalogue. To access the catalogue, select the Library link from the John Abbott website. 2. Type your search term(s) in the box, and click Search. A space between keywords implies that both or all words must be present in the retrieved catalogue records. 3. To exclude print books and films, and limit the results to e-books, click the e-book link under either Format or Location in the right column. 4. Click on an ebook title that interests you. 5. In the full catalogue record, examine the subjects and additional notes to decide whether this book is of interest to you. If it is, select Click to view e-book JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 3
6. For users who are off-campus, an intervening page will appear requesting your John Abbott staff or student number. For students, omit any leading zeroes, if there are any. For example, if the number is 00012345, only enter 12345 7. The e-book will open in a new browser tab. Double-click anywhere in the book page s margins to turn the page. You can also click individual chapter titles in the right column. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 4
To turn the pages, either use the arrows at the top, enter a specific number, or scroll in the right margin. Or, navigate the chapters in left panel. In Ebsco e-books, margin-clicking does not work; the only page navigation options are the left and right arrows below the book s page, or the chapter contents links in the left margin. 8. Generally, the library catalogue will identify all the relevant e-books that we have in our collection. However, both ebrary and Ebsco offer alternative, full-text search interfaces when you are looking for something very specific that may be discussed on only a few pages. You can search ebrary s entire e-book collection by entering ebrary via a JAC catalogue search, and then clicking the Search tab at the top of the page. Click the + icon to add additional search concepts. Join synonymous concepts on JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 5
each search line with OR, specify search phrases by placing terms within quotation marks, and permit multiple word endings with the use of an asterisk, e.g. wealth* will retrieve both wealth and wealthy. In this example, W10 specifies that either the text word poverty or poor must be within ten words before or after the word inequality or distribution. The number after W can be set to anything you wish. Click the? icon for other search features. USING e-books Searching for words within a book 9.
