Library Media Services Finding, Using & Downloading e-books version 20170424. Contact: library.ref@johnabbott.qc.ca Overview In mid-2017, four fifths of JAC Library s books are e-books, about 250 thousand out of a total of 310 thousand items. The College provides access to 120 thousand e-books in all academic subjects via Ebsco Academic Collection, 40 thousand college-level, medical and nursing e-books via ebrary College Complete, and four thousand scholarly titles in the Canadian Publishers Collection. The library s licences permit unlimited, concurrent, online viewing and downloading of these e- books for JAC users. This guide demonstrates how to search for, use, and download e-books from the JAC Library catalogue. Contents FINDING e-books... 2 USING e-books... 6 Searching for words within a book... 6 Copying & Pasting Text... 8 Creating a personal bookshelf and annotations... 10 DOWNLOADING CHAPTERS & ENTIRE e-books... 14 Chapters or Segments... 14 Downloading Entire e-books... 16 ADDITIONAL TRAINING RESOURCES... 23

FINDING e-books 1. Whether you are searching for print books or e-books, always begin from the JAC library catalogue. To access the catalogue, select the Library link from the John Abbott website. 2. Type your search term(s) in the box, and click Search. A space between keywords implies that both or all words must be present in the retrieved catalogue records. 3. To exclude print books and films, and limit the results to e-books, click the e-book link under either Format or Location in the right column. 4. Click on an ebook title that interests you. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 2

5. In the full catalogue record, examine the subjects and additional notes to decide whether this book is of interest to you. If it is, select Click to view e-book JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 3

6. For users who are off-campus, an intervening page will appear requesting your John Abbott staff or student number. For students, omit any leading zeroes, if there are any. For example, if the number is 00012345, only enter 12345 7. The e-book will open in a new browser tab. Double-click anywhere in the book page s margins to turn the page. You can also click individual chapter titles in the right column. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 4

To turn the pages, either use the arrows at the top, enter a specific number, or scroll in the right margin. Or, navigate the chapters in left panel. In Ebsco e-books, margin-clicking does not work; the only page navigation options are the left and right arrows below the book s page, or the chapter contents links in the left margin. 8. Generally, the library catalogue will identify all the relevant e-books that we have in our collection. However, both ebrary and Ebsco offer alternative, full-text search interfaces when you are looking for something very specific that may be discussed on only a few pages. You can search ebrary s entire e-book collection by entering ebrary via a JAC catalogue search, and then clicking the Search tab at the top of the page. Click the + icon to add additional search concepts. Join synonymous concepts on JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 5

each search line with OR, specify search phrases by placing terms within quotation marks, and permit multiple word endings with the use of an asterisk, e.g. wealth* will retrieve both wealth and wealthy. With Ebsco s Advanced Search option, you can search combinations of keywords within the entire text of the e-books, and specify how closely different terms must be within each other. In this example, W10 specifies that either the text word poverty or poor must be within ten words before or after the word inequality or distribution. The number after W can be set to anything you wish. Click the? icon for other search features. USING e-books Searching for words within a book 9. You can identify on which pages specific words or phrases appear. For example, type africa into the Search Document box. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 6

10. The width of the blue bars in the left column signifies the frequency of the search word s appearance in each chapter or section. Click on each chapter heading to find page occurrences. 11. Highlighted occurrences of the search term appear in blue. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 7

12. With EBSCO ebooks, click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right column, and enter your search term(s). Results are displayed with several words before and after the search term. Copying & Pasting Text 13. Text on the page can be highlighted and copied by selecting the copy icon. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 8

The text appears in a small box from where it can be copied (ctrl-c) and pasted (ctrl-v) into a Word document. The book s citation is appended to the text automatically. You can change the default citation format to MLA or APA by signing in under a free personal account and clicking My Settings. Please refer to steps 14 and 15. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 9

Creating a personal bookshelf and annotations 14. Additional features, such as downloading to an e-book reader, annotating text, and creating a personal collection of e-books require that you create a free, personal ebrary account. Click Sign In and then Create an account. Note that when you click on Create an account, your web browser may issue you a security warning. If so, select the continue or proceed option. Internet Explorer. There is a problem with this website s security certificate. Continue to this website (not recommended). Firefox. This connection is untrusted. I understand the risks. Chrome. This site s security certificate is not trusted! Proceed anyway. 15. Once your account is created, click on Sign In again, and enter your Username and Password. 16. You can add the current e-book to your personal folders by clicking Add to My Bookshelf. Then click Bookshelf on the top right tabs to view your bookshelf. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 10

17. You can annotate sections of the text by highlighting the text and clicking the Add note icon on the toolbar directly above the text. Type your note in the text box, and click OK. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 11

18. Your annotations will appear on the e-book page, and are listed in the Bookshelf. 19. To print excerpts from the book, choose InfoTools > Print. The maximum permissible print length is determined by each publisher. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 12

20. Highlighting of text also requires being signed in. 21. Simiilarly, in EBSCO ebooks, you must create a personal account in order to download and make annotatations. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 13

DOWNLOADING CHAPTERS & ENTIRE e-books Chapters or Segments 22. E-books can be read online as long as you have a direct Internet or WiFi connection. For most publishers, it is also possible to permanently download an individual section or chapter of the book as a PDF file, or borrow the entire e- book for a period of either 7 or 14 days. In all such cases, users must create a free, personal account via the Sign In link, as demonstrated in steps 14 and 15 above. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 14

23. After doing so, find the detail page of your desired book, click the Read Online button, then the Download Book icon at the top. Complete the three steps. You must have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your device to read the downloaded book. About one-tenth of both our 32 thousand ebrary e-books and114 thousand Ebsco e-books are viewable online, but cannot be downloaded for offline use, owing to publisher restrictions. Non-downloadable titles include those from Cambridge University Press and MIT Press. Ebrary s exclusion list, of which there are currently sixteen publishers: http://support.ebrary.com/kb/publishers-prohibit-downloading/ Along with Cambridge U.P. and MIT Press, McGill-Queen's University Press, Ashgate, Princeton University Press, and University of California Press e-books are also non-downloadable via Ebsco. 24. For PDF (Portable Document Format) images, click on OK after selecting the pages, and an Acrobat dialogue box will appear once the download is complete. Clicking on Open With will open the chapter in Adobe Acrobat. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 15

Downloading Entire e-books 25. Note that Adobe Digital Editions software, which is free, must be installed on your computer to complete the e-book download to an ebook reader such as a Nook or Kobo. For owners of Amazon s Kindle, ebrary and Ebsco provide specific instructions that are linked at the end of this guide. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 16

For ipad and other Apple users, download the free Bluefire Reader application from the App Store. 26. Having registered and installed the software, return to the ebrary web page for the book of interest, click Download, and in the pop-up window, click Create an account if you have not already done so. Click on Download after establishing your account, and enter your email/username and password. You are now ready to download the e-book. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 17

The first time you use Adobe Digital Editions only, you will be requested to authorize your computer by entering your Adobe ID and password. 27. On the dialogue box, click Open with Adobe Digital Editions and OK. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 18

28. The e-book is now saved to your local computer, and opens in Adobe Digital Editions. 29. To copy the e-book from your computer to an e-reader, connect your e-reader to your computer, and click Library in the upper left of the screen. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 19

30. The name of your e-book reader will appear under Devices in the left column. Click and drag your downloaded e- Book from the Bookshelves area over onto your ereader. On a single Adobe account, for the duration of the loan period, all downloadable e-books may be copied onto a maximum of six individual devices simultaneously. For example, you could store the file to a desktop computer, laptop computer, ereader, mobile phone (via ios or Android apps), USB flash drive et al. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 20

31. To know when your 14-day e-book loan will expire, right-click on the cover in the Bookshelf, and select Item Info. In this instance, the book is available until June 4, 2013. Unlike print books, e-books are not renewable, however you can borrow them again. 32. Both Ebrary and Ebsco permit up to ten book downloads per user account. Should you wish to download an eleventh e-book, you must Return one of your existing ten. You can do so by right-clicking on the title, and selecting Return Borrowed Item. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books. Version 20170424 page 21

33. As in the online versions of ebrary and Ebsco ebooks, you can select text and copy it, via Edit > Copy, dependent on whether the individual publisher permits it. In Adobe Digital Editions, you can also insert bookmarks, create and save annotated passages in the text, and perform simple keyword searches. JAC Library. Finding, using & downloading e-books.
