The Coosition The Cooser Jeremy Woolstenhulme received his B.M.E. rom Brigham Young University in 000 and an M.A. in Perormance rom the University o Nevada (Las Vegas) in 005. Currently, Mr. Woolstenhulme serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School istrict. He has traveled with his orchestra to London, Washington,.C., Boston, and New York. Mr. Woolstenhulme s orchestra was selected to lay at the 008 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. He is also a contract musician with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, cellist or the Seasons String Quartet, and a reelance musician erorming at many venues located on the amed Las Vegas Stri. He lives with his beautiul wie Taryn and their two children, Cadence Belle and Coda Blake. My irst child, Cadence Belle, was born in Aril o 003. It was a new beginning or me, just as sringtime symbolizes a new beginning in the world. With the blooming o lowers and the resh rain, the world seems to be energized, as i ull o new lie and hoe. The mother duck and her ducklings seem to relect the reciousness o lie. Seeing a new colt juing around its mother shows the excitement and joy that new lie can bring. When I held my new baby in my arms or the irst time it seemed I was at the beginning o a new ath that would bring joy and hainess to my lie. Aril is a lullaby or my little girl. Rehearsal Suggestions: Aril works best with a lexible teo. Allowing the time to ush and ull where aroriate can really make some o the musical moments haen. For exale, at the beginning, ush orward through mm. 3 and then ull back and slow down when the melody aears at m. 5. From here, the orward motion o the song should resume. It needs orward momentum or the song can drag, but at key laces, ulling back can be very exressive. The violins and violas can ractice the melody together i you start the st violins at m. 5 and the nd violins and violas at m. 33. This unison ractice is good or the grou s intonation and synchronization, and it also lets them know when they are laying the tune so they can bring it out or back o i they are not laying the melody. Make sure the measures with 3 eighth note slurs (or instance, m. 8) are very smooth and connected. At m., the nd violins and violas can do a lot with this line musically by shaing the reeated notes to mirror the contour o the line. A diicult shit in the st violin occurs in mm. 35 and 39. I would sing an exale o that interval (a erect th, like Here comes the bride ) and have students sing back so they can internalize the interval when shiting rom the G to the high C. Legato, connected notes are essential in this song: make sure the nd violins and cellos connect the dotted quarter to the eighth note slurs starting at m.. The basses are so iortant at m. 50 that they need to dig into the string to make that rising line the ocus o the hrase let your bassists know it is their time to shine! Relax the teo rom m. 75 to the end and really stretch the st violins in m. 8. Aril should end with a sweet whiser.
