Day 4: Prose-to-poetry Poem #4: elegy / Story #4: Shoofly Pie (184) Must have 3 stanzas, 4 lines in each Write the poem as though YOU are Mattie writing about her mother!!! Start the first two stanzas with: I remember Rhyme scheme: ABAB, CDCD, EFEF Use figurative language! Last stanza: words of comfort and hope for the future I remember Grandma because she had little to waste She was always precise in the proportions of things. Her eyes were all she needed to have the perfect taste For her amazing pies and apple rings. I remember her dresses were the same style; Her floral print was never too large or bright, We could always spot her coming within a mile Those flowers embodying a life of gleaming light Growing in the pasture, sunflowers perhaps; Harvest as carefully, gratefully as she once did And take them to her in an old teapot She ll like knowing she taught me something.

Day 5: Prose-to-poetry Poem #5: Sonnet / Story #5: Dyaspora (384) Write the poem about either YOUR culture that you love OR from the perspective of this author who loves her culture Must have 4 stanzas Must be in iambic pentameter (TEN syllables in each line!) Must have rhyme scheme: Stanza 1 (4 lines): ABAB Stanza 2 (4 lines): CDCD Stanza 3 (4 lines): EFEF Stanza 4 (2 lines only): GG

Day 6: Prose-to-poetry Poem #6: ode / Story #6: An excerpt from Night *The purpose of an ode is to PRAISE or GLORIFY something *Your poem must be about an object/subject you admire Step 1: Select a topic for your ode, and make a list attributes for that topic. Step 2: Consider how your topic could be a metaphor and include it in your ode. Step 3: Create phrases and stanzas based on step 1. Use a dictionary and thesaurus! Step 4: Shift words/phrases, add literary devices to make it sound better. Requirements: Put yourself in the position of the people in this story. If you had to suddenly leave your home and possessions behind, what is one thing you just could not live without? Your ode CANNOT be about electronic devices! No exceptions. You must create your own rhyme scheme pattern. Your ode must be written in quatrains (4 line stanzas) You must have 5 6 quatrains

Day 7: Prose-to-poetry Poem #7: cinquain / Story #7: Two Friends Line 1: one word (subject/noun) Line 2: two words (adjectives) or phrases that describe line 1 Line 3: three action verbs or action phrases that relate to line 1 Line 4: four words or one single phrase to describe feelings that relate to line 1 (based on the story!) Line 5: one word a synonym of line 1 or a word that sums it up *Must be about an aspect (character, idea, event, etc.) from the story, Two Friends (p.440) *Rhyme scheme optional

Dinesen) pg. 690-692 Choose any of the poem styles we ve covered in class: (bio, cinquain, diamante, elegy, name, ode, sonnet) *Must be about your chosen story!! *Must have a rhyme scheme *Whichever poem you choose, follow the requirements
