Rachel Heard, President Mississippi Music Teachers Association The officers and membership of Mississippi Music Teachers Association extends our congratulations to all those who participated in the 2010 Pre-College Evaluations at the local levels and to these who are honored in this Special Edition of the MMT as participants in the 2010 Pre-College Finals at William Carey University in Hattiesburg on Saturday, May 1, 2010

Stephanie Kristen Sapp of Vicksburg, Mississippi is the 18year old daughter of Don and Mellany Sapp and the sister of Daniel and Courtney. Stephanie is a 2010 homeschooled honors graduate and plans to attend college in the fall, majoring in Intercultural Studies and Missions. Stephanie has studied piano for 11years, 10 of those at the studio of Susan Gambrell. She is a 10- year participant in the MMTA Pre-College Auditions, earning 10 years of all Superior ratings to qualify for the State-level recital. Three times, Stephanie has attained the highest composite score for her age level. She has participated in numerous recitals and Master classes and used her gift of music to often perform for church worship services and nursing homes. Stephanie is also a classically-trained dancer with 11 years of dance in the studio of Teresa George. As with piano, dance has given her many opportunities to perform and to choreograph pieces for church productions and studio recitals. Participating in Ballet Magnificat s Summer Dance Intensive for 2 summers was a highlight of her dance experience. Extensive volunteering in her church and community has given Stephanie opportunities to work with many people, helping to prepare her for future mission work. In February, 2010, she traveled to Vancouver, Canada, to serve as a More Than Gold volunteer during the Winter Olympics and met people from all over the world. Stephanie also enjoys art, reading, journaling, fitness, and several recreational sports including tennis, ice skating, basketball, and running. In only her second race to run, she recently finished first in her age division in the Clinton Brick Street Firefly 5K. Shaoxin Lu began piano at the age of seven and has loved it ever since. Her current teacher is Dr. Rachel Heard, a music professor at Millsaps College, whom she has been with for six years. Previously, Shaoxin studied with Sandra Polanski and Kay Johnson. Shaoxin has participated regularly in various annual piano competitions such as the Sonata/Sonatina Festival, Bach Festival, Mississippi Music Teacher's Association Auditions and Pre-College Finals, Alcorn State Competition, and MTNA Competitions in Concerto and Solo Performance where she represented the state of Mississippi in the Southern Division in Virginia, January 2009. Aside from classical music, she has also served her church and church choir as the pianist. Shaoxin will attend Duke University in the fall and plans to pursue a minor in music. Page 10

Erin Dyer, sixteen years old, is the daughter of Don and Helen Dyer and a rising senior at Oxford High School. She began her piano studies at age six with teacher Ya Chin Lan and one year later became the student of Stacy Rodgers, with whom she continues to study. Erin has qualified for the State Special Recognition Recital every year since she was seven years old, winning gold medals and many second places while competing in Solo Performance, Sonata / Sonatina, and Theme & Variations. She has participated in the Pre-College Concerto competition every year since 2003 and has won gold medals in that competition as well. Erin has also participated in the Eunice Hoffmeister Young Artists Competition in Florence, Alabama, winning the award for Most Promising Young Artist in 2007 and first place in the category of piano in 2008. She has also attended the Piano Discoveries Camp at the University of Mississippi for the past three years. Erin has been a member of the Oxford Charger varsity tennis team since seventh grade, helping them win three consecutive state titles and achieve an overall head-to-head team record of 107 wins and 0 losses. In 2009, she was No. 2 Girls Doubles state runner-up and a member of the Mississippi All-State Tennis Team. Erin is also an active member of many clubs and organizations. During her freshman and sophomore years, Erin was a member of the Oxford High School band and color guard. She is the recording secretary in Anchor Club, the Key Club reporter, and a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Spanish Honor Society. Erin is a straight- A student and has won numerous academic awards, including awards in Chinese, Spanish, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, and AP English III and the Miriam S. Pullen award for excellence in mathematics. This year, she won first place at the High School Modern Languages Fair at the University of Mississippi in the category of Chinese. John Mark Dodd is the son of David and Sandy Dodd of Corinth, MS and will graduate from Eagle Home School Association in 2011. He has studied piano with Janet Gray for nine years and violin with Rebekah Smith in TN for seven years. He was awarded the Level 10 High Composite Score award by MMTA in 2009. As a participant in MFMC Festivals for nine years, he has attended Mississippi College Piano Camp five years (three on on District Scholarships). He has scored Superior in auditions with NGPT for nine years. As a member of Oakland Baptist church, he has been a member of the church orchestra, playing violin since 2001; he has been involved with the puppet ministry, sings in the youth choir and rings in the handbell choir. He has participated in several mission trips, one to Ecuador, through the Southern Baptist Ministries, where he is certified in the Chain Saw Miniistries working on the Gulf Coast following Katrina, in Kentucky and North Mississippi. In the community he has played in the Ensemble for several Little Theatre musical productions. Also, he enjoys soccer and basketball. Page 11

Brian Xu, son of Jianzhong Xu and Ruiping Yuan, is in the class of 2012 at Starkville High School, where he has a 4.0 GPA. Brian has studied piano since 2000 and has been a piano student of Dixie M.
