Page 1 Functional Description The 8mm High Performance DL-60 (Gold Plus) feeder advances components from dual Reel Holders to the Peel Edge on the Window where the Mylar (cover) tape is removed. The components are then advanced to the feeder pick-up position where they wait for pickup by the machine. Procedures and Adjustments The subsections that follow contain the procedures required for proper feeder operation. Theory of Operation / Sequence of Events Power is supplied to the feeder from the feeder interface by means of the Pogo Block's two (2) bottom pins. At power-up, the feeder's Controller Board activates the Control Panel, which is verified by the illumination of the Status Light. In this ready mode, the feeder stands idle waiting for a signal from the placement machine to advance. The signal is transported through the top two (2) pins of the Pogo Block. After the signal is sent by the placement machine, the feeder indexes with the following operational sequences: The feeder's Drive Motor is activated for component tape advancement. The Drive Motor engages a series of gears that advance the component tape as well as peeling the Mylar cover tape. The peeled Mylar cover tape causes the tension sensor to trip. The Reservoir Drive system activates, taking up the slack Mylar cover tape. The Slot Sensor, in combination with the Toothplate, verifies proper tape index and positioning. The feeder's carrier tape and cover tape Drive Motor shut off. The feeder signals the placement machine that the feeder index is complete. The feeder waits for the next index signal which is sent after a component has been picked. CAUTION When powering up the feeder, make sure the startup sequence is complete before pressing any Control Panel Buttons. The startup sequence is complete when the Status Light illuminates GREEN and the Control Panel Display is blank. CAUTION Use a Hover-Davis Feeder Set-Up Cart for your feeder. Using a non Hover-Davis Feeder Set-Up cart may void the warranty and/or damage the feeder.

When a lane is selected using the Lane Select Button, the Status Light associated to the lane NOT selected will be off. If the feeder has an error and a lane Status Light is flashing RED, pressing the Lane Select Button will clear the error. In the event that a feed advance cycle is not properly completed, the feeder will signal the operator by flashing the respective lane Status Light GREEN for five seconds. The feeder will continue to operate and complete a pick cycle provided that the next tape advance cycle is successfully completed. The Advance Button is used to advance the currently active lane, as indicated by the lane Status Light that is illuminated at the time. If both Status Lights are illuminated (no lane selected), pressing the Advance Button will have no effect. Used to toggle select the active lane. After 30 seconds of no Control Panel activity, both Status Lights will light showing the status of their respective lanes. Lane selection is necessary to advance the feeder using the Control Panel, or for adjusting the offet. This button is also used to restart the Reservoir Motors to apply tension to the cover tape. Used to toggle select between either 2 or 4 pitch carrier tape. Indicates the current pitch selection of the feeder, both lanes always have the same pitch setting. Status Light Color Summary Light Color Mode Orange Normal Mode: Feeder has been powered up and is ready for use. Calibration Mode: Calibration setting is zero (0). Flashing Green (5 seconds) Normal Mode: Feeder has mis-advanced but operation continues. Flashing Red Normal Mode: Feeder Carrier Drive is jammed. Normal Mode: Feeder has missed two (2) consecutive advances. Flashing Orange Normal Mode: Feeder Reservoir error. Red Calibration Mode: Calibration setting is behind the factory setting. Green Normal Mode: Feeder is in normal operation Calibration Mode: Calibration setting is ahead of the factory setting. Off Normal Mode: The alternate lane is active.

Page 3 Powering Up CAUTION When powering up the feeder, make sure the startup sequence is complete before pressing any Control Panel Buttons. The startup sequence is complete when the Status Light illuminates GREEN and the Control Panel Display is blank. On power up, the feeder will light the appropriate Pitch Indicator Light, and both Status Lights will flash green for 1 second. Then both Status Lights will turn solid orange. The Status Lights turn from orange to their appropriate status once the feeder has run its motors for the first time (press of Lane Select Button, reset command from host, or advance command from host). Allow the feeder two (2) seconds prior to button selection. The first advance the feeder performs will begin by attempting to take up any slack in the cover tape (up to approximately 12mm). The advance will be delayed until tension is sensed in the cover tape for that respective lane or when the Reservoir Motor time-out occurs. All future advances are executed immediately, independent of the cover tape tension sensor position, as long as the status is ready (green light). Basic Operation The two Status Light's will normally indicate the status of their respective lane. If the feeder has an error and a Status Light is flashing red, pressing the Lane Select Button will clear the error (for both lanes). There are two sources of feeder errors that are detected: 1. If either reservoir tension mechanisms fail to properly tension the cover tape before it stops running, the status will change to flashing orange. 2. If either carrier tape drive sprocket sensors fail to see two consecutive sprocket teeth, NOTE When the feeder status is error, the feeder will not advance when commanded. The only exception is, if the error cause is lack of reservoir tension, the feeder will advance from the feeder control panel while displaying an error status. When the Lane Select Button is pressed one of the Status Light's will turn off. The Light that is illuminated will indicate which lane is selected. Pressing the Lane Select Button additional times will toggle switch between the two lanes and the appropriate Status Light will illuminate. After 30 seconds of no control panel activity, both of the Status Light s will illuminate and will resume their normal function of showing the status of their respective lane. Lane selection is necessary before advancing a feeder using the Control Panel Advance Button or when adjusting the offset of a feeder. Pressing the Advance Button will make the selected lane move the distance shown. Pressing the Advance Button when no lane is selected will have no effect. Pitch Selection The pitch setting is indicated by the Pitch Indicator Light's (2p or 4p). To change the pitch setting, the feeder must be powered up. Press and hold the Pitch Select Button down until the Pitch Indicator Light changes. The feeder will advance automatically after the pitch is changed. Repeating this process will toggle the pitch setting between 2 and 4 pitch. This setting will be stored in the feeder and remain while the power is off.

Page 4 Tape Deck Insert Application for Punched (Paper/Plastic) Carrier Tape The Punched (paper/plastic) Deck Insert is used when presenting components from all (paper/plastic) punched carrier tapes. Punched (paper/plastic) carrier tape cover tape There is a Hold Down Magnet, on the bottom of the Punched (paper/plastic) Insert that secures the Insert to the Tape Deck during the production run. Page 5 Tape Deck Insert Application for Embossed Carrier Tape The Embossed Deck Insert is used when presenting embossed carrier tapes that have a pocket depth equal to or less than 0.045 / 1.15mm. Page 6 Tape Deck Insert Application for Embossed Carrier Tape (continued) There is a Hold Down Magnet, on the bottom of the Embossed Deck Insert that secures the Insert to the Tape Deck during the production run. The Embossed Deck Insert can be identified by it s gold color. Page 8 Changing the Tape Deck Insert for Punched (Paper/Plastic) or Embossed Component Tape To install an embossed or punched (paper/plastic) Tape Deck Insert, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Open the Tape Window and Peel Edge. See pages 14 and 22. 2. Inspect the feeder for any loose components prior to installing Tape Deck Inserts. 3. Lower the Insert into the Tape Deck (narrow end of Insert towards the feeder tail, as indicated below) and slide the Insert until it drops into position. Page 9 Removing the Tape Deck Insert from the Tape Deck To remove an embossed or punched (paper/plastic) Tape Deck Insert, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Open the Tape Window and Peel Edge. See pages 14 and 22. 2. Inspect the feeder for any loose components prior to removing Tape Deck Inserts. 3. Using the pointed end of the Tape Deck Removal Tool, lift and move the Deck Insert Tape Deck Removal Tool Tape Window Tape Deck Tape Deck Insert Peel Edge 4. Using the magnetic end of the Deck Insert Tool, lift the Deck Insert and remove it from the Tape Deck. 5. Store the Tape Deck Insert in the Tape Deck Storage Area. Page 10 Operating the Tail Section The tail section of the feeder is designed to accommodate reel splicing without having to remove the feeder from the placement machine. To remove a empty reel when implementing reel splicing, pull up, then straight back on the component reel. Remove the Reel Pin Cap from the Reel Pin Assembly and remove from the empty tape reel. For complete instructions on splicing, please see the Platform Tape Feeder Operation manual. NOTE In order to trigger Product Setup and Validation (PSV), the Reel Pin Assembly must be moved from the contacts at the home position. This will communicate to the placement machine that a reel has been removed from the feeder (When PSV is enabled on the placement machine). Reel Pin Assembly Contacts Reel Pin Cap

Page 11 Operating the Tail Section / Adjusting the Reel Tensioners The Reel Tensioners can be adjusted to accommodate different diameter reel sizes. To adjust, push the Reel Tensioner Lock Button in, then slide the Reel Tensioner up or down until the desired reel size shows through the Reel Size Window on the Reel Tensioner. Page 12 Loading the Tape Reel (Lane 2) With the Reel Pin Assembly removed from the feeder, remove the Reel Pin Cap from the Reel Pin Assembly and insert the Reel Pin Assembly through the center hole of the tape reel. Insert the Reel Pin Cap into the end of the Reel Pin Assembly to secure the Reel Pin Assembly to the tape reel. Lift up on the Reel Tensioner and insert the Reel Pin Assembly into the slot in the Tail Section. Slide the Reel Pin Assembly all the way forward and down. Direction of feed Direction of feed

Continue feeding the tape until it reaches the Tape Window. Guide Roller Latch Lever Direction of feed

Page 14 Opening the Tape Window and Peel Edge (Lane 2) To open the Peel Edge, rotate the spring loaded Window Latch forward, this will allow the Tape Window to be opened. Lift the Tape Window. The spring loaded Window Latch will latch over the edge of the Tape Window to hold it open. Both Peel Edges can now be opened and closed. Push down on the Peel Edge Latch and lift the Peel Edge. The end of the Peel Edge will latch under the Window Latch Tape Window Peel Edge Peel Edge Latch

Page 15 CAUTION When loading component tape, especially 0603 and smaller devices, extreme care must be taken to make sure loose components do not drop into the feeder drive mechanism. These small devices can lodge in the gear teeth causing drive failure. To load tape into the Tape Window area, open the Tape Window and feed the component tape into the Tape Window channel. Make sure the component pockets fit in the channel. CAUTION When loading and unloading component tape, extreme care must be taken to make sure the Peel Peel Edge Spring Align component pocket with channel Load carrier tape to at least this point, if there is not enough leader If the carrier tape does not have enough leader to load into the Exit Chute, the front of the carrier tape must be cut into a point. Load the tape so that the leading edge is at least past the Tape Sprocket, as shown by the arrow in the illustration above. For ease of tape loading, it is recommended that the carrier tape be cut as shown, every time tape is loaded, regardless of whether there is enough leader tape or not.

Page 16 Loading Tape into the Tape Window (Lane 2) (continued) CAUTION When loading component tape, especially 0603 and smaller devices, extreme care must be taken to make sure loose components do not drop into the feeder drive mechanism. These small devices can lodge in the gear teeth causing drive failure. Continue feeding the component tape into the exit chute at the front end of the feeder, peeling back approximately 15 (381mm) of cover tape as you do. Lay the cover tape over the Peel Edge. A Mylar cover tape extension may be used if 15 (381mm) of cover tape is not available. Align the sprocket holes of the component tape with the Toothplate. CAUTION When loading and unloading component tape, extreme care must be taken to make sure the Peel NOTE Make sure there are no twists or knots in the cover tape and/or Mylar cover tape extension, if used. Page 17 Press down on the Peel Edge to lower it against the carrier tape. Pull the cover tape back towards the Cover Tape Folding Roller. Page 18 Threading Cover Tape into the Reservoir (Lane 2) (continued) Pull the cover tape straight back and trim away excess, leaving approximately 1 (25.4mm) extra past the Reservoir Idler Roller and the Reservoir Drive Roller. Page 19 Loading the Tape Reel (Lane 1) With the Reel Pin Assembly removed from the feeder, remove the Reel Pin Cap from the Reel Pin Assembly and insert the Reel Pin Assembly through the center hole of the tape reel. Insert the Reel Pin Cap into the end of the Reel Pin Assembly to secure the Reel Pin Assembly to the tape reel. Lift up on the Reel Tensioner and insert the Reel Pin Assembly into the slot in the Tail Section. Slide the Reel Pin Assembly all the way forward and down. Page 22 Opening the Tape Window and Peel Edge (Lane 1) To open the Peel Edge, rotate the spring loaded Window Latch forward, this will allow the Tape Window to be opened. Lift the Tape Window. The spring loaded Window Latch will latch over the edge of the Tape Window to hold it open. Both Peel Edges can now be opened and closed. Push down on the Peel Edge Latch and lift the Peel Edge. Page 23 Loading Tape into the Tape Window (Lane 1) CAUTION When loading component tape, especially 0603 and smaller devices, extreme care must be taken to make sure loose components do not drop into the feeder drive mechanism. These small devices can lodge in the gear teeth causing drive failure. To load tape into the Tape Window area, open the Tape Window and feed the component tape into the Tape Window channel. Make sure the component pockets fit in the channel. CAUTION When loading and unloading component tape, extreme care must be taken to make sure the Peel Peel Edge Spring Align component pocket with channel Load carrier tape to at least this point, if there is not enough leader If the carrier tape does not have enough leader to load into the Exit Chute, the front of the carrier tape must be cut into a point. Load the tape so that the leading edge is at least past the Tape Sprocket, as shown by the arrow in the illustration above. For ease of tape loading, it is recommended that the carrier tape be cut as shown, every time tape is loaded, regardless of whether there is enough leader tape or not.

Continue feeding the component tape into the exit chute at the front end of the feeder, peeling back approximately 15 (381mm) of cover tape as you do. Lay the cover tape over the Peel Edge. A Mylar cover tape extension may be used if 15 (381mm) of cover tape is not available. Align the sprocket holes of the component tape with the Toothplate. CAUTION When loading and unloading component tape, extreme care must be taken to make sure the Peel NOTE Make sure there are no twists or knots in the cover tape and/or Mylar cover tape extension, if used. Page 28 Removing Cover Tape Slack Power up the feeder using either the placement machine or the feeder setup station. Both Lane Status Indicator Light s will illuminate orange. Next, press the Lane Select Button, this will advance the Cover Tape Drive Mechanism and remove all cover tape slack from both lanes. You may need to press the Lane Select Button a second time depending on how much slack needs to be taken up. When the Reservoir becomes full, the cover tape will start to push the Reservoir Door open. When this occurs, the Reservoir should be emptied as soon as possible. To empty the Cover Tape Reservoir, swing the Reservoir Door open, pull the excess cover tape from the Reservoir, and trim away the excess with scissors. Push the trimmed end of the cover tape back into the Reservoir and close the Reservoir Door. NOTE The actual properties of the cover tape, such as thickness, will determine when the Reservoir Door will start to push open. Cut cover tape Reservoir Door

Page 31 Removing Loose Components from the T-Rail (Lanes 1&2) To remove loose components from the T-Rails on Lanes 1 and 2, hold the feeder with both hands and tilt it downward to lower the Tail Assembly. Gently shake the feeder to remove loose components from the T-Rails as shown below. It is recommended to remove any component tape reels from the feeder. It is recommended to empty the Precision Block, tape paths, and T-Rails when a feeder is swapped from the placement machine, when the feeder is re-loaded with a component tape reel, and during regular feeder maintenance. Page 32 Offset Setting Mode 1. Make sure the feeder is latched and powered up. 2. Press and release the lane select button to select the lane to be adjusted. 3. Press and hold the lane select button for 10 seconds or until the status Light turns off to enter Offset setting Mode. 4. After releasing the lane select button, the Status Light will either be: A. Illuminated ORANGE, indicating that the feeder is at the factory calibrated pick point. B. Flashing RED, where the number of flashes will indicate the number negative offsets currently subtracted from the factory calibrated pick point. C. Flashing GREEN, where the number of flashes will indicate the number of positive offsets currently added to the factory calibrated pick point. 5. Pressing and releasing the advance button will increment the calibration setting forward.001. Pressing and releasing the pitch select button will increment the calibration setting backward 001". The carrier tape will not move when making this adjustment until you have exited the calibration mode and advanced the feeder. Repeat the process as necessary until you are at the desired pick location. 6. Pressing both the advance and pitch select buttons at the same time will reset the feeder to the factory calibrated pick point. 7. Page 33 PSV Enable/Disable Setting The PSV Diagnostic is used to verify the feeder s present state of PSV functionality. 1. Press and hold the Advance Button and the Pitch Select Button down while powering up the feeder until the Status Lights stop flashing and turn OFF. 2. Press the feeder latch lever downward to lock the feeder into place and release the Advance Button and the Pitch Select Button. 3. When the feeder is in PSV Enable/Disable diagnostic and the Status Lights for lanes 1 and 2 are illuminated GREEN, PSV is Enabled. To Disable PSV, press and release the Pitch Select Button. The Status Lights for lanes 1 and 2 will be illuminated RED. 4. When the feeder is in PSV Enable/Disable diagnostic and the Status Lights for lanes 1 and 2 are illuminated RED, PSV is Disabled. To Enable PSV, press and release the Advance Button. The Status Lights for lanes 1 and 2 will be illuminated GREEN. 5. To save the current PSV setting and exit PSV Enable/Disable Diagnostic, unlock and power down the feeder. NOTE The PSV on/off setting has no effect on the PSV Sensor check function. However, if the feeder doesn't have PSV Sensors hooked up the status indicated by that diagnostic setting will be random. NOTE PSV Enabled is the factory default. When replacing parts and securing Covers, make sure all Cables are securely routed to avoid pinching and feeder damage. When moving the feeder, always use the feeder handle to avoid feeder and Pogo Block damage. When the feeder is loaded into the placement machine, the Latch Lever MUST BE latched up in the locked position.
