Program Note When Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) invented the electromagnetic telegrah system in the 180s, he could not have anticiated how its technological advances might be reinterreted artistically in the next century. Another inventive sirit, Charles Ehraim Burchield (189-1967), drew insiration rom both the system s hysical aearance and the sounds emanating rom miles o telegrah wires strung on wooden oles along country roads. A masterwork o synesthesia, Song o the Telegrah (1917-52) ersoniies Burchield s highly recetive mind that could translate auditory stimuli into incredible visual reresentations. Song o the Telegrah (2010) is in three continuous movements, each addressing a dierent asect o Burchield s ainting. The irst movement, Across the Wires, eatures a series o undulating textures itted against an energetic taing motive, not unlike the visual rhythm o Burchield s humming telegrah wires. Song o the Clouds introduces long, legato hrases that weave together into a series o assing clouds, each gathering greater intensity until reaching a stormy climax. A iccolo solo introduces the inal movement, Bluebird s Halo. Although a somewhat hidden eature o the ainting, the diminutive bluebird erched on the ence encoassed by a golden halo strikes out against the surrounding darkness. The orchestration brightens, as a sile tune becomes the basis or revisiting the irst movement s telegrah motive.
