These changes have been organised by The South Yorkshire Passenger Executive (SYPTE) who are responsible for negotiating/co-ordinating home to school transport including issuing contracts etc. The main change to the service is that several of the routes will be operated by First Mainline and will form part of the Public Bus Service they offer across South Yorkshire. As a result other paying passengers will also be using the service and students will need to ensure that they follow the rules and regulations which apply to any paying passenger. Student behaviour on the school bus This has been an ongoing concern for several years and something which we have consistently tried to tackle. Unfortunately, I still have some students who feel they can be rude to the Bus Driver, they can throw things around the bus etc., with vaping and smoking on the bus being a continuous concern due to minority of persistent offenders, unfortunately, no-one feels able to give us information about these. In addition, students losing/spending their bus fare or those losing their bus pass who still seem to expect to get a journey home. If a student was at Meadowhall and didn t have any bus fare they would not expect a free journey home; the same rules apply to home school transport. In addition if rude to the driver or behaving in an inappropriate way they would expect to be put off the bus. These rules will apply to the school bus service so some students will need to alter their existing behaviour. There will be a number of cameras on the new buses and students are to expect a complete First Mainline ban if their behaviour is anything from exemplar. I am pleased with the above as it means that the vast majority of students who behave impeccably on the school bus can experience a safer and more pleasant journey to and from school. Snagging When the new service is introduced there are likely to be some initial worries/concerns. As a school we will be working with the SYPTE to address these as quickly as possible. These will no doubt include issues over capacity; however, with the rule re three students being able to sit on two seats this may be alleviated. (It is recognised, however, that there may be circumstances where it will be preferable to allow children to sit 3 for 2 or stand on a bus rather than leave them behind, particularly where their personal safety may be at risk). As the service has been added to the existing public service there will be changes to bus times which is something students will need to adapt to. Advantages I welcome the fact that students behavior will be monitored more carefully and when inappropriate it could result in a South Yorkshire wide ban. In addition, the buses should be significantly more comfortable and the journey more pleasant. Because the service is mainly operated by First Mainline this will allow fare payers to opt for a 6 weekly ticket which will not only save money (10 x 0.80 = 8.00) but this also includes unlimited travel on evenings and weekends etc. This can also be purchased via a mobile app and so students would no longer need to carry bus fare. The service can also be tracked via the SYPTE website and there will be a dedicated Bradfield School page from which you can get updates which may be particularly useful in bad winter weather i.e. snow and ice. Please note that this only applies to the services covered by First Mainline i.e. Wisewood, Loxley, Stannington and Grenoside. Powells Travel The Rural Service will continue to be run via Powells Travel and the timetable as at present applies. SYPTE, working with other bus companies and the local authorities, has put alternative travel arrangements in place for the 78 routes run by BrightBus to 32 schools. As this is 11 pages of which a maximum of 1 route is needed/family we have not provided these. However if you do have problems accessing the website then if your son/daughter asks at reception we will provide a paper copy.
