The Thiessen class may not be counted as one of two classes necessary to be eligible for additional Saskatoon Music Festival scholarships, or advancement to Provincial competition. This being done primarily to avoid unfair competition between schools that offer extra-curricular jazz and highly organized schools offering jazz studies courses. Schools may have a separate jazz band and jazz study course, but in order to these classes the extracurricular jazz band may not contain any members of the jazz studies course.
