June 2016 Volume 41, Number 06 THE NEW ORLEANS QUINTET TO APPEAR AT PSTJS ON JUNE 19TH By George Swinford The band we ll hear on June 19th is the current version of a group first heard at Gaye Anderson s New Orleans Restaurant in 1985. They continued playing there one night a week until that venerable venue closed its doors in 2013. At one time or another many musicians well known in Seattle s trad jazz circles have been part of the band Bob Jackson, Skip McDaniel, Mike Duffy, Dave Brown, and pianist Peter Kok, to name just a few. Clarinetist George Goldsberry was one of the original members. He has remained with the band throughout the years. George has the added distinction of being the only WW2 veteran in the band. For at least a couple of decades Dave Holo was the cornet voice of the band, as well as its music director and principal vocalist. Although he s no longer a regular with the group he ll join them at our meeting, for a musical reunion. The band we ll hear on the 19th will be composed of the following players: Leader Jake Powel on guitar and banjo, guest artist Dave Holo on cornet, George Goldsberry, representing the Greatest Generation, on clarinet, Steve Wright on tenor sax, Ray Skjelbred on piano, and Matt Weiner on bass. In the absence of trombone in the band, perhaps Matt will favor us with his unique bass version of Ory s Creole Trombone. As Jake says We all look back on the run at the New Orleans Restaurant under Gaye Anderson as a charmed moment in our musical lives, and although it lasted an amazingly long time it was still over too quickly. Many of us were fans of that old joint in Pioneer Square, and along with the musicians, we still miss it. Why not join us for the last concert before our summer break, and share a taste of what used to be? WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge 6411 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. June 19 ADMISSION: $12 PSTJS members $15 non-members. Pay only at door. FURTHER INFO: Carol Rippey 425-776-5072. Or - website: www.pstjs.org. Plenty of free parking; great view & dance floor, snacks, coffee, and other beverages available. NOTES FROM THE PREZ I have great news... we have been able to meet the amount of sponsorships for travel fees for the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band!!! We did have fewer pledges this year than in the past, but thanks to the members at our May Jazz Sunday we reached the goal. Many thanks to all of you who have pledged sponsorships for the Schulz weekend, September 17-18. It ll be another fabulous time for all of us. Now that we have met our goal it s time to send your checks to... PSTJS, 19031 Ocean Avenue, Edmonds, WA 98020... ASAP so the flight ticketing can begin. Wishing each of you a wonderful summer and I m looking forward to seeing many of you at Jazz in September. Cheers, Judy

June 2016 Jazz Soundings Page 3 THE PIANO STOOL TRADITION Recently, a question came up, Whatever happened to the piano stool? It was located, safely tucked away, in our own storage locker at the Elks. Leroy Johnson was kind enough to take a photo of the underside of the piano stool so we could share with you some of the signatures that have been a part of our jazz history past. Here are just a few of the signatures (and the band they were appearing with) to see if we can get your memory juices flowing. How many other signature can you identify? Dick Shooshan / Golden Eagle J B / 1998 Terry Waldo / Gutbucket Syncopators / 1998 Trebor Tichenor / St. Louis Ragtimers / 1994 Butch Thompson / Trio West / Chris Tyle s New Orleans Rhythm Kings / 1992 Photo by Leroy Johnson By Anonymous Board Contributor For many years, the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society held the monthly meetings at the Mountaineers Club in Seattle, which provided us with a piano. At one point, it became necessary for the society to purchase its own piano. One of our members located a Gulbransen upright piano for sale in Mount Vernon, WA., which we did purchase. The piano came with a standard bench, which didn t always measure up to the visiting piano player s needs, so we purchased a swivel-top piano stool. It was suggested that we invite each piano player that was appearing with the featured band, to sign his or her name to the underside of the stool, which we continued to do for many years. When we made the move from the Mountaineers Club to the Ballard Elks, we no longer needed our piano, due to the fact that the Ballard Elks already had two pianos. Our piano and bench went into storage.
