Use the indexes and table of contents to find your topics. If you need additional books, use DESTINY, our online resource catalog. You can access DESTINY from STUDENT LINKS (available from home too). On- Line Databases Very reliable, credible sources!!!! History Reference Center: This is a history- specific database with lots of search options to help you narrow/broaden a search. To access this database from school: From STUDENT LINKS, click onto History Reference Center. Make sure that the FULL TEXT box is clicked. Use the TIMELINE limiter feature to narrow your search, if needed. Look at the bibliographies at the end of articles for other possible sources. Use the CITE button on the right sidebar and then scroll for the MLA citation copy and paste! Enter the Username: uschs and Password: panther In order to scroll through and/or print an entire JSTOR article, you need to use the PDF browser print icon. From this page, click the VIEW PDF button On this screen, click ACCEPT TO view PDF. POWER Library: MasterFILE Main Edition: Arguments, statistics, documents, scientific and/or case studies From STUDENT LINKS, click the POWER Library link. Find the LIST ALL link to the right of the BROWSE tab. Scroll down to find MASTERFILE MAIN EDITION Make sure the click on the FULL TEXT box. You can limit to PRIMARY SOURCES too in the PUBLICATION TYPE section. Type in your search and choose limiters. To cite an article, click the CITE button on the right sidebar and then scroll down to the MLA citation. Make sure to select FULL TEXT and SCHOLARLY (PEER REVIEWED) JOURNALS to get scholarly results. ü On the results page, you can view the article in HTML or PDF, if available. Use the Print, Email, Save, CITE buttons on the right side bar as necessary. ü POWER Library Home access: Try from STUDENT LINKS, click onto the POWER Library link. If that doesn t work, go to the Township Library s web page http://www.twpusc.org/library/index.html o You will need the barcode number from your TOWNSHIP LIBRARY CARD! o On the right- hand side of the screen, click onto ONLINE DATABASES. Under General Reference, click Access PA POWER Library. o Follow the directions and enter the barcode number on your Township Library card. If you need to use your password, it is the last 4 digits of your phone number. o Then click onto the database that you want to use. 2

If needed, login: user I.D.: uschs password: panther Choose the HIGH (for high school level). Type in your search at the top of the page. On the results page, if needed, limit your search by content type on the left sidebar. On the article page, use the tabs and tools icons as needed. The CITE icon will give you the MLA citation to copy and paste- - - FOR ARTICLES ONLY. Use the GREEN SHEET to cite other content types. Gale s Discovering Collection: General reference database From STUDENT LINKS, click onto the Gale s Discovering Collection. If prompted, type in the password panther and click PROCEED. Once you get your results list, look at the left side bar for additional subject headings that can narrow or broaden your search. The SOURCE CTITATION at the bottom of the article is NOT in MLA format! Use the MLA GREEN SHEET #17 to format a database article. Web Sites Evaluate the sites that you get when using a search engine like google or yahoo. Is the site credible? Biased? Current? Is it a BLOG- - - which can be opinion? Evaluating Web Sites Is the author/producer of the site listed on the page? Is there any reference to the author s authority in the subject matter presented in the website? Is there a way to contact the author on the page (e- mail, address, phone number)? Is the site linked to a government, educational, or commercial establishment? Does the site list sources used in the information presented? Is the purpose of the site obvious? To the best of your knowledge, does the site use correct spelling and grammar? Does the site have a copyright and/or last revision date? (Look at the bottom of the page.) Do the links on the page work? Are the links relevant and appropriate? Try GOOGLE SCHOLAR &/or GOOGLE BOOKS for other sources. You may have to copy and paste these URLs into your browser.
