WILLAMETTE STAMP & TONGS THE NEWSLETTER OF SALEM STAMP SOCIETY Volume 42, Issue 10 CELEBRATING 82 YEARS 1933-2015 October 2015 WEBSITE www.salemstampsociety.org SEPTEMBER CLUB MEETING Aaron Currier presented a program on minerals, rocks, and fossils on stamps. This very informative program also showed us examples of many of the minerals, rocks and fossils that were pictured on the stamps, with some of them being very close in appearance to what was shown on a particular stamp. Dr. Gary Taylor joined Salem Stamp Society at the meeting. He collects the United States. Welcome Gary, to Salem Stamp Society. OCTOBER CLUB MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 AT 7:30 P.M. At this meeting, everyone is encouraged to be a dealer or trader. You may also be a buyer or window shopper. Look through your duplicates. Bring them to the meeting as your sales or trade stock. They may be just what someone else is looking for or decides to start collecting. There are 25 lots on the October bid board. See the insert page for a description ot the lots. FROM THE PRESIDENT It s Not Just About A Hobby Have you heard? The experts are saying that an active social life is good for you. I have in the past talked about the importance of getting to know people with like minds and hobbies as a way to get out and meet new people. It s more than that, making new friends is just one bonus. It s the change in attitude that comes with getting out, taking part in club activities, going to shows, attending board meetings. It s the feeling oh I have a meeting tonight as I walk out the door to the Wow I really had a good time at the end. The oh so good feeling of elation that comes over you when you converse with people and share a similar experience. I always walk out of a meeting or show with a smile on my face. Many of you don t know this about me, I m an introvert. It is extremely difficult for me to talk to strangers and to Salem Stamp Society P.O. Box 202 Salem, Oregon 97308 www.salemstampsociety.org President Lisa Janz 503 949-3920 Vice President Alan Maul 503 743-2639 Secretary Gary Tiffin 503 743-2306 Treasurer Jerry Gooley 503 581-3462 Auction Director Bob Reynolds 503 580-6574 Show Director Gary Tiffin 503 743-2306 Board of Directors Peter McCallum 503 982-5741 Karen Nurmi 707 888-4196 Marc Dochez 503 538-6217 Raymond Berg 503 871-2563 Newsletter Editor Lucien Klein 503 981-1001 Webmaster George Struble 503 364-3929

get in front of a group and speak. My job helped me learn some ways to cope, but I will say that being part of this club has helped me get past most of my fears, and being part of a regular group activity can help even us die hard wallflowers. Being part of a social group is an important part of our well being, and no matter what the social group comprises of, get out and join the fun. October Meeting The October meeting is a Swap Night so if you have items to sell bring them with you. Make sure to come even if you are not selling. Not only do you get to visit all evening with your fellow members while enjoying Lauren Reynolds treats and Ray Berg s coffee, you get to rifle through all those stamps for sale from fellow members. See, I already have a smile on my face. Other News If you haven t had a chance yet, check out the Salem Stamp Society web page. George Struble is our new webmaster and he s doing a great job of getting it updated. Thanks George for stepping in after Frans. And Frans, Thank You for all you did, from developing and maintaining the site and for helping George to get started. We can t thank both of you enough. Lisa FROM THE LIBRARY New books added to the library: LaPosta Journals between 1991-2004. We now have most of the journals in those years. The United States Specialist Journals for 2013-2014 added. The Library is looking for Michel s Stanley Gibbons, or other country catalogs that are in the 2000's. If you have any catalogs that fit that description and are willing to donate them to the library please let me know. See you at the meeting, Lisa GREETINGS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT The October club meeting is Swap Night or Everyone is a Dealet. Bring those duplicate stamps and unwanted philatelic items that may be just the thing another person is looking for. The Frame of the Month for October will be by Lisa Janz. The Frame of the Month program is now booked through December of this year. We are now filling months for 2016, which is just around the corner. Reserve your month early, they may fill up fast. The club s programs are set for the rest of 2015, but if you have ideas for programs in 2016, see me at any of the meetings. Also, if you have ideas about future workshops, see me about those as well. George Struble, the club s new webmaster, has been hard at work updating the website. Check out the progress. If you have ideas for the site, let us know. Alan Maul FALL STAMPEX Thank you to all of our members who visited our dealers at Fall Stampex. The ad that Show Director Gary Tiffin placed in the Statesman Journal helped to inform collectors and brought them to the show. First time visitors came from Dallas, Gig Harbor WA, Albany, Corvallis, Portland, Salem and probably many other places that we did not happen to learn about. 2015 CLUB MEETING PROGRAM SCHEDULE November December Club Auction Elect officers and directors for 2016 Christmas Dinner Party at Marco Polo Global Restaurant SALEM STAMP SOCIETY HAS A NEW WEBMASTER George Struble is the new Salem Stamp Society Webmaster. The site now has new and up-to-date content with more content planned. Take a look at the website: www.salemstampsociety.org. for information about Salem Stamp Society and club activities. THANK YOU, FRANS GEERLINGS

Frans served as our webmaster for many years informing the public and our members about Salem Stamp Society and what was going on in our world and the philatelic world. He is now retired from the position but is still a member of Salem Stamp Society and will be attending club meetings when he can. So, again, we all say THANK YOU, FRANS. BOB BURGER S STAMP STORE HAS MOVED Bob has moved his store to Pringle Park Plaza, in Salem, in a space that has 150 square feet more of area. His address is: 275 High Street SE, and his phone number remains: (503) 390 9074. WOULD YOU LIKE TO RECEIVE YOUR WILLAMETTE STAMP & TONGS BY EMAIL? It can get to you sooner. You would receive the issue in color where color is used. It saves Salem Stamp Society the cost of postage and paper. This will not work for everyone and it will always be necessary to mail some copies and have print copies available. But, if you would like to receive your newsletter by email, please email me at: lusal@q.com. NOMINEES FOR 2016 SALEM STAMP SOCIETY BOARD AND OFFICES The nominating committee reports that the following are its nominees for election at the November club meeting: President Alan Maul Vice President Lisa Janz Secretary Gary Tiffin Treasurer Jerry Gooley Board Member for a one year term: George Struble Board Members for a two year term: Peter McCallum Karen Nurmi Bob Reynolds TAKE A LOOK AT LINNS.COM Linns.com is the website of Linn s Stamp News and the Scott Catalogs. I looked at it on September 29. It contains up-todate stamp news and articles covering many topics. It showed stamps honoring people who were born on September 29. There was a report that the stamp show, NORDIA 2015 will change its venue because the original show hotel in Stockholm is now accepting asylum seekers. The new location for the show has not yet been named. It reported that the United Nations has issued a special pane of stamps for the pope s visit. There is an article on remote Penrhyn Island and its intriguing postage stamps. There is a stamp market tip of the week. There are also audio and video Monday Morning Briefs talking about a Bolivia migrant stamp, the Duck Stamp contest, another upright Jenny pane being found (which according to USPS is number 20 out of 100), and Hoodoos on worldwide stamps. There are many other features including several blogs. It looks like the website may be updated every week. It would be easy to spend an hour or more (or less) on the website. KAREN NURMI GETS LISTING IN SCOTT CATALOG FOR MALI STAMP SHE DISCOVERED At the September club meeting, Karen reported to the club that she had obtained a new Scott catalog listing for a Mali stamp. I requested that she send me information about the matter so that it could be reported in Willamette Stamp & Tongs, which she graciously did. She found a Mali 385fr stamp from 2005 that had not been listed in the Scott catalog and proceeded to write Scott Publishing Company about the stamp. Martin J. Frankevicz, Scott s New Issues Editor, asked to borrow the stamp so that they could list it. He explained that Scott needs the actual stamp to take measurements and get a proper scan of it. He said that Scott generally holds on to borrowed stamps for 8-12 weeks as they go through the listing process. Karen sent the stamp to Scott and about 8 weeks later, the stamp was sent back to Karen thanking her for letting them borrow the stamp and informing her that it had been assigned Scott Catalog number 1146. Scott had showed the 2005 issue commemorating the 23 rd Summit of Heads of State of Africa and France with two 195 fr stamps assigned Scott numbers 1141 and 1142, with a footnote then stating Two additional stamps were issued in this set. The editors would like to examine any examples. Karen found an example, sent it to Scott and it got listed.
