It is an electronic collection of periodicals. It may include the full text of articles or only indexed citations. Some collections are broad in scope; others may be subject-specific. Gateway Technical College provides free access to over 30 databases, covering 5000+ journals, many available in full text. Why use a Database? Why not just use the Internet? There is no quality control over what is posted on the Internet. If you are looking for information that is reliable and professionally reviewed, you don t want articles that are trying to sell you something! You may be asked to pay for journal articles on the Internet. Gateway can supply them free of charge! What Databases are available to Gateway students? And how do I choose which one to use? Start at the Library Homepage: www.gtc.edu/library and scroll down to Databases EbscoHost is a good place to begin. EbscoHost is a vendor that offers access to 24 different databases, which you can search individually or in combination. For Human Services topics, select: Academic Search Elite provides full text for 2000+ publications, including 1500+ peer-reviewed journals. Education Research Complete - full text for more than 2,000 journals back to 1936 Professional Development Collection - designed for educators, 520 high quality education journals, including nearly 350 peer-reviewed titles. Business Source full text for nearly 1,100 business publications, provides articles about human services issues in the workplace WilsonWeb is a single database with all fulltext. 100% full text database, easy to search, all articles are available from the database. Search EbscoHost for Journal Articles On the Library web page (www.gtc.edu/library), under Databases, select EbscoHost. Click on EbscoHost, then on Login to Ebscohost. EbscoHost is an online collection of 24 databases covering many subjects, including Sociology, Economics, Business, Medicine, Science, and Technology. Many of the articles are available in full text. You can also search an image collection, a newspaper collection, and a company directory. ***Follow instructions for logging in! Type gtc, then your student ID number (gtcxxxxxxx) Choose the databases you want to search, depending on your subject interests. For Human Services topics select Academic Search Elite, Associates Programs Source, Professional Click Continue when you have chosen your databases. Development Collection, and Business Source. If you want to see which periodicals are indexed a given database, click on the Title List link below the database name. You can then select one journal title and read all the articles in any issue. Searching for an article Type a keyword or phrase that describes your article search in the Find box. Combine search terms using AND if you want both terms, OR if you will accept either one. childhood). Results: a list of articles that match your search Click on an article title to view an abstract and citation. Click on full text to read the article. (It may be in HTML or PDF format You can add articles to your folder as you scan through the list, and then reconsider and print or email as a batch. (Your folder will empty, though, when you log out of Ebsco, so be sure to save them to a flash drive.) If you didn t check Full Text before your search, you may get the message: Follow the directions to request the article from another library. This is a free service for Gateway students and staff. This process make take a week to complete. Your selected article: Note that you can Print, Email, Save (on your flash drive), cite, or add to a Folder. Click on the icon that looks like a typed paper, and choose either APA or MLA format, depending on your instructor s requirements. Then copy and paste into your paper. Guide to WilsonWeb OmniFile: Full Text Select Edition is a multidisciplinary, 100% full-text database providing articles, with indexing and abstracts, from these Wilson periodical databases: Art, Applied Science & Technology, Biological & Agricultural Index, Education, General Science, Humanities, Index to Legal Periodicals & Books, Library Literature & Information Science, Readers Guide, Social Sciences, & Wilson Business. Coverage begins in 1994. BEGIN at the Library web page (http://www.gtc.edu/library) Under Databases (Articles) click on WilsonWeb. LOGIN by typing your 7 digit Gateway student ID number. (No gtc before the number) SEARCHING: Type your search terms. Use AND to combine terms; OR to indicate that either term will do. You can limit by Date of publication, or by Peer Reviewed, which will give you only articles published in academic journals. ALL articles are full text! RESULTS: Click on Full Text HTML or PDF to read the article. You can SAVE, PRINT, or EMAIL it.
