Post of THEATRE DIRECTOR, Swindon Theatres JOB DESCRIPTION HQ Theatres & Hospitality (HQT&H), the venue management division of the Qdos Entertainment Group, is the UK s second largest theatre operator, with a portfolio which currently embraces contracts to run twelve theatres and concert halls. HQT&H operates the Swindon Theatres (the Wyvern Theatre, and Swindon Arts Centre) on behalf of Swindon Borough Council. The Wyvern Theatre was opened in 1971 by Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and HQT&H has operated it since 2007. Swindon Arts Centre was opened in 1956 in a former Methodist Chapel; in 2014, Swindon Borough Council invited HQT&H to take over management of the Arts Centre, under an unprecedented contract for the two venues, with the umbrella title Swindon Theatres. This has proved to be a highly successful arrangement, with an expanded programme at the Arts Centre playing to significantly increased numbers of people, alongside the continuing commercial, community and artistic success of the Wyvern Theatre. The Wyvern Theatre has 635 seats, none of them more than 70 feet from the sizeable, well-equipped flexible proscenium stage. The building also incorporates two bars, a café-bar, a recently-refurbished bright restaurant / hospitality space (The Spotlight Room), a rehearsal room / studio space, and a number of offices providing bases for Swindon community arts organisations. In a separate building in Devizes Road, the Arts Centre has 224 seats and a café-bar; there is also a community library operated by South Swindon Parish Council. Page 1 of 6

Swindon Theatres presents a mix of nationally- and locally-produced work. At the Wyvern Theatre, the programme is characterised by a strong mix of genres including stage musicals; drama; top stand-up comedy; traditional pantomime (produced by One From the Heart in association with Qdos Pantomimes); children s and family shows and entertainment; dance; rock music; jazz, country and world music; spoken word; community performing arts activities; and classical music, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing twice yearly, and a Swindon Recital Series. Under HQT&H s management, audiences have grown substantially, and despite its middle-scale capacity, the Wyvern regularly presents major tours of titles such as The Mousetrap, The Play that Went Wrong, The Girl on the Train, Rock of Ages, and The Full Monty. The programme of the Arts Centre embraces community shows and events; an eclectic range of live music; family entertainment; film; talks and personal appearances; a regular Comedy Club and a strong strand of emerging stand-up comedy alongside a Swindon Arts Centre specialism: regular try-out gigs by leading performers such as Michael McIntyre, Russell Howard and Rhod Gilbert. In both venues, HQT&H presents an ambitious and well-established Community Engagement programme, embracing a range of activities for young people and families (including Family Fun Days, and the annual Summer Youth Musical Theatre Project), and for harder-to-reach groups in the community. Swindon Theatres hosts regular meetings of its pioneering Memory Café for dementia and Alzheimer s sufferers, and a recently-introduced Memory Cinema. Swindon Theatres are home to Swindon s annual Festivals, including a nationally-renowned Literature Festival. In both venues, HQT&H has invested in attractive refurbishments of the front-of-house areas to enhance their comfortable and pleasurable facilities for pre-show and interval refreshment. Additionally, the restyled Spotlight Room has created an excellent location for hospitality events, and private parties and celebrations, all of which, as an HQT&H mark of distinction throughout its portfolio of venues, are managed and presented in-house as an integral part of the exciting experiences on offer to audiences and the venues communities. Swindon Theatres benefits from strongly-led HQT&H Group marketing of all features of its business (hospitality as well as theatre and entertainment); and HQT&H s market-leading web-based ticketing system has established from the outset a remarkable level of online sales. Against this supportive Group background, there is substantial business growth opportunity via the continuing presentation of a distinctive and attractive programme (theatre / entertainment and hospitality) and via the development of audiences in response to a boldly-articulated Swindon Theatres brand. These opportunities combine to make this an unrivalled opportunity for an energetic and entrepreneurial Theatre Director to advance his / her career. Page 2 of 6
