Directions: After reading a book over the summer, complete the reading log below. Book Title: Author: Evaluate the book by giving it a rating based on a 4-star scale (4 stars is the highest rating you can give). Justify your rating by explaining why you would or would not recommend the book to others (5-7 sentences).
Directions: After reading a book over the summer, complete two of the written response options below. Circle the options you choose. Your project may either be typed or neatly handwritten in the space provided below. 1. Write a continuation of the story. Describe what you think might happen to the characters after the story has ended. What obstacles do these characters face and what will they do to overcome them? Your response should be two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. Make sure your answer only includes information based on what happens after the story ends. (Do not retell the story.) Be sure to use what you have learned about the setting and characters as you tell what happens next. Everything should be logical based on the events in the story. 2. Choose a scene from the story and rewrite it from a different character s point of view. Include the chapter and page number you are choosing to re-write. Explain the events from your chosen character s perspective and be sure to maintain a clear tone (voice) throughout that fits with the events of the story. Make sure to include all major events, but include information that is not included in the book. Do not include direct quotes from the book. Your response should be a minimum of two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. 3. Summarize the book. Use the following criteria: -Somebody (Describe the main character in 2-3 complete sentences.) -Wanted (Describe the character s goal/motivation in 2-3 complete sentences.) -But (What is the conflict or problem in 2-3 complete sentences.) -So (Describe how the character tried to solve the conflict in 2-3 complete sentences.) -Then (How does the character resolve the conflict in 2-3 complete sentences.) 4. Consider how the main character reacted to incidents that occurred in the story, and then write an essay in which you analyze how the character s thoughts and actions reveal aspects of his or her personality. Include evidence from the passage to support your analysis and understanding. Your response should be a minimum of two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. 5. Create an alternate setting for the story. In the first paragraph, describe the original setting in 2-3 sentences and then describe the new setting in 2-3 sentences. In the second paragraph, choose an important event in the story and rewrite it based on the alternate setting. Each paragraph should be a minimum of 5-7 complete sentences.
