The listening and analytical skills demonstrated will bring about a deeper understanding of music as an art form. Previous musical training, albeit helpful, is NOT required. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Through a historical survey, develop a deeper appreciation of classical music 2. Through an analysis of artistic trends, describe the cultural and historical development of classical music 3. Through analysis of specific works, understand music theory fundamentals 4. Schirmer, 3rd Edition, 2007 MT6.H565 M87 2007 (includes 2 Accompanying CDs and 4 Supplemental CDs) READING AND LISTENING: A reading and listening assignment will be posted on LMES before each lecture. Some listening assignments will come from the 4 supplemental CDs available at the back of the reserve copies of the textbook in the library. CD and track numbers for listening assignments are written in the textbook. EXAMS: There will be one Mid-Term Exam and one Final Exam. The Mid-Term will take place during regularly scheduled lecture time. The Final Exam time and place will be announced later in the semester. No make-up exams will be offered. ONLINE PARTICIPATION (SELF-TESTS): Two Self-Tests will be available on LMES over the course of the semester to allow students the opportunity to evaluate their progress in the course. Studentsʼ Self-Test scores will NOT count towards their overall grade. Rather, students will receive online participation credit for taking each Self-Test. Self-Tests will be available during a 24- hour period. No make-ups will be offered. THE INTIMACY OF CREATIVITY SPECIAL EVENT/IC REPORT: SHSS is proud to present The Intimacy of Creativity The Bright Sheng Partnership: Composers Meet Performers in Hong Kong from 25 April to 8 May, 2011. This workshop will give students a unique opportunity to listen to new works being developed and performed by renowned performers and composers. Students will be asked to attend sessions and performances and submit a 300-400 word report. Using musical terminology discussed in class, students need to describe ONE-TWO WORKS heard in sessions and performances. Complete information about The Intimacy of Creativity is available at www.ic.shss.ust.hk. All events are free of charge and will take place on campus at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall (near the Campus Bookstore) and the HK Academy for Performing Arts (downtown). Sessions will take place weekdays from 10:30-13:30 and 15:00-18:00. Students will be asked to attend sessions in lieu of selected lectures and tutorials (see schedule below). Students whose tutorial meeting times do not coincide with IC session times, MUST attend another session. The regular attendance policy will be in effect during these sessions (see Attendance below). For all IC sessions, students must provide a photocopy of their HKUST card for proof of attendance at these events. Concerts will be held on 30 April and 7 May at 8pm campus at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall and 1 May and 8 May at 3pm at the HKAPA Concert Hall. Students MUST attend one concert each weekend. If students cannot attend the required number of HUMA 115 (Tommasini) 2011 Spring 2

concerts due to schedule conflicts, they must notify the Instructor or TA Staff with an explanation the week PRIOR to the concert(s). There may be opportunities to interact with composers and performers and students will be encouraged to do so. Students attending the Art Hall concerts must bring a photocopy of their HKUST card to the concert as proof of attendance. Those students who do not provide the photocopy will not be admitted to the event and will not receive attendance credit. Students attending the HKAPA performances will have the opportunity to receive free student tickets. The IC reports will be due at the last lecture meeting of the semester (Tues 17/5). More details about the events and report requirements will be outlined during lecture. BANG ON A CAN SPECIAL EVENT: Tutorial sessions will be CANCELLED during week 5 so that students may attend Bang On A Can: Crossing the Genres Lecture/Demonstration hosted by composer David Lang and double bassist Robert Black on Wed 9/3 from 1-2:30pm. Attendance at this event is MANDATORY. The event is free and students must provide a photocopy of their HKUST card to be admitted to the event. Those students who do not provide the photocopy will not be admitted to the event and will not receive attendance credit. Students who have scheduling conflicts with this date must notify the Instructor or TA Staff with an explanation at least 24 hours PRIOR to the event. ATTENDANCE: Lecture and tutorial attendance is MANDATORY for this class. Attendance will be taken 10 minutes after the beginning of each session. For each absence, students will have 1% deducted from their attendance grade (10% maximum deduction). For each late arrival to a session, students will have 0.5% deducted from their attendance grade (again, 10% maximum deduction). In the case of special circumstances, students must inform the Instructor or TA Staff at least 24 hours PRIOR to the class meeting. COURSE SCHEDULE: INTRODUCTION/MEDIEVAL MUSIC A discussion of Medieval culture, sacred music (including the Medieval mass and motet), and secular forms will cover the work of composers Hildegard of Bingen, Leonin, Perotin, and Machaut. Music theory concepts related to these works will include fundamentals of rhythm, meter, and melody. Music theory concepts will continue with a discussion of counterpoint. The section will begin with a discussion of the art, culture, and general philosophy of music during this time period followed by a discussion of vocal genres (oratorio, cantata, and opera) and instrumental genres (the suite, and sonata). Related music theory concepts will include key signatures, major and minor scales, and the circle of fifths. In addition, new genres of the concerto and symphony will be covered. This section will also include the topic of functional harmony (tonic, dominant, subdominant) as it relates to the forms associated with genres of this period. ROMANTIC MUSIC The most extensive section of the semester will begin with a discussion of the chamber music of early eighteenth century composers Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, and Robert and Clara Schumann. The section will continue with an overview of the continuing development of opera, including the work of Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner and cover new genres of ballet and program music with the works of composers Berlioz, Strauss, and Tchaikovsky. Music from the second half of the eighteenth century will include works by late Romantic composers Brahms and Tchaikovsky, and nationalist works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Smetana, and others. The development of harmony and form during this period will be covered as it relates to the works discussed. TWENTIETH CENTURY ART MUSIC During this period, students will be privileged to see and hear twentieth century art music being developed and performed by renowned performers as part of The Intimacy of Creativity The Bright Sheng Partnership: Composers Meet Performers in Hong Kong. Lectures will cover the many styles of art music during the twentieth century, beginning with works by early twentieth century composers Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Bartok, Schoenberg, and others. Impressionism, neo-romanticism, expressionism, and primitivism will be examined along with neoclassicism and 12-tone music. The section will continue with works by composers of second half of the twentieth century, including Varèse, Crumb, Cage, Copland, and others. A discussion of the radical development of theoretical concepts will focus on rhythm (including ostinato complex, polyrhythm), harmony (including polytonality), and serialism as they relate to the works during this period.
