TABLE OF CONTENTS Quick Start Guide... 4 Lesson One, the letter d... 5 Dan The Dancing Deer... 9 3

Quick Start Guide Read the book WITH your child. You read the regular text, and he/she reads the big, red words, sort of like reading the different parts in a play. Help your child sound out the words as needed. Read the book several times. This helps develop the eye muscles and left-to-right reading patterns. Don t rush it. Bodybuilders don t train in a day neither does a child. And most important of all, HAVE FUN! 4

Lesson 1 This is the letter d d The letter d says -d- for dog. Can you say -d- for dog? 5

Lesson 1 We use the -d- sound in lots of words, like: Dan the dancing deer Dizzy Doctor Duck Do not dine on donuts 6

Lesson 1 Show me the pictures that start with the -d- sound. Answer: Dog, door, dinosaur, duck. 7

Lesson 1 Here is a word we can make with the letter d can you read it? dan 8

dan the deer danced in the b park. b 9

dan danced all day from dawn b until dark. b 10

And then one day b his radio died. b 11

dan sat down and cried b and cried. b 12

b Poor little radio b what happened to you? b I will get you fixed... I promise you! b 13

dan ran all the way to the b radio store. b 14

dan knocked two times and b opened the door. b 15

But the big b man wasn t there that day. b 16

He was eating b lunch at a b Chinese buffet. b 17

So his little, white b cat was watching the store... b 18

...on the day that b dan walked through the door. b 19

Oh, my! thought b the cat. That is a big mouse! b 20

But do I want a mouse in my b house? b 21

Mice have tummies and b tails and toes... b 22

A mouse in b my house? b 23

Oh, no, no, no, no! 24

So the cat growled dan and frowned at. Inside her head was a b catch-a-mouse plan. b 25

dan took a deep b b breath and said, Boo, b hoo! My radio died. Oh! b What should I do? 26

cat I suppose, said the, you think I can fix it? She wrinkled a nose like b broken, old biscuit. b 27

My radio is my only b friend. All I want, b said dan, is to hear it again. b 28

cat Then, said the, you can get in this box. Come on, get in, b quick, quick, chop, chop. b 29

dan looked at the b box it was rather small b and he, dan the deer, was really quite tall. b 30

But dan did not like b to make a fuss, so he b squeezed himself in with b the spiders and dust. 31

The cat grabbed b some tape and b wrapped up the box. 32

And then, to be b sure, she locked b it with locks. b 33

A mouse in the b house? Ha, ha, I fixed that. b b 34

And now, said b the cat, it is time for a nap. b 35

dan wriggled and b jiggled but couldn t get b out. What are you doing?! b he said with a shout. 36

Hush! said the b cat. I am trying to sleep. b 37

dan What? said. Did you call me a b sheep? b 38

Shush! said the b cat. Don t you dare speak again! b 39

Are you working b on fixing my radio b friend? b 40

Stop! said the b cat. You must make no more noise! b 41

Then, while I wait, b can I play with some toys? b 42

The cat pushed a b pair of socks into b her ears. 43

There! said the b cat. Now I won t have to hear... b 44

HE L L O O OOO O O O O Helllloooooo? b dan said... 45

...and the cat nearly screamed. b 46

Silence! she said. b Or I ll break your b machine! b 47

Wait! thought the b cat. If I fix the box, b b I won t have to listen b to silly mouse-talks. 48

So the cat put b the radio onto b her bed. 49

Aha! These b batteries... they b are all dead! b 50

Plop! Plop! b New batteries... b 51

...turning it on... 52

...it started to b play Dan s b favorite song. b 53

dan couldn t help it he started b to dance. b 54

Yes, inside that b box, he partied b and pranced. b 55

BOOM! Ba-boom! The b box burst! b 56

Locks flew b everywhere! b 57

dan sat on the floor with b dust in his hair. b 58

My radio works! Oh! I am in love. dan cat grabbed the b and gave her a hug. 59

dan danced out the door with b his radio friend... b 60

...the cat to sleep...b went 61

...and that was b the end. b THE END 62
