He eventually assed the ob o comosing the music to his son, Alred urt, a azz trumeter and young comoser. The ather-son team roduced ive carols together beore ates s death, and Alred urt went on to write ten more, including the oular Caroling, Caroling, and Some Children See Him, made amous originally by the Voices o immy oyce and now recorded by artists all over the world. THE URT AMILY CAROLS In 1922, Rev. ates G. urt, my great-grandather and a sel-taught musician, began comosing annual Christmas carols. He wrote both the text and music and sent them as Christmas greeting cards to his arishioners in Marquette and later in ontiac Michigan. Nineteen o these carols were recently ublished by red ock Music Co. as The amily Carols o ates urt. In 192, ates assed the ob o comosing the music or the annual carol to his son, Alred S. urt, a azz trumeter who had ust received his music degree rom the University o Michigan. The Christmas list grew, and Alred urt's carols were soon made amous by the Voices o immy oyce. They are now recorded by artists all over the world. The Star Carol (195) In 2001, resh out o St. Ola College with a degree in music comosition, I decided to try my hand at the amily tradition with a re-setting o ates urt's text "In a ar udean City." Within days o its irst reading, I received a call rom Minnesota ublic Radio, who was interested in running a eature about the renewed amily tradition. Now, each carol remieres annually to a regional listening audience on Minnesota ublic Radio. And each year, like the generations beore us, my mom and I collaborate to roduce the new Christmas card, which, like ates and Uncle Al, we send to our amily and riends. She creates the design and does all the roduction, which oten includes hand-staming, asting, glittering, and olding hundreds o cards, while I concentrate on trying to it all that music in a 5x7 sace.
