PRE-VISIT GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS Adapted from the book written by Zizi Azah Bte Abdul Majid and illustrated by Izmir Ickbal

GOING TO ESPLANADE

I am going to Esplanade Theatres on the Bay to watch a show called Fatimah and her Magic Socks.

ARRIVAL When I get to Esplanade, the bus will drop me off at the Esplanade Mall Driveway. Esplanade Mall Driveway

GETTING TO THEATRE STUDIO The show will take place at Esplanade Theatre Studio. The Theatre Studio is on level 4. I can take either the lift or the escalators.

TOILET Before I go in to watch the show, I can go to the toilet. To get to the toilet, I will walk up the stairs. I can also use the access ramp. If I need to, I can also go to the toilet during the show. Stairs Access Ramp ramp

This is a toilet for girls and women.

This is a toilet for boys and men.

This is a special toilet for children.

TOILET Sometimes, there might be a lot of people who are waiting to use the toilet. I will wait for my turn to use the toilet.

TOILET I can wash my hands at the sink. I can use a hand dryer after I wash my hands. It makes a loud noise but it will stop after a while. If the noise is too loud for me, I can cover my ears.

OUTSIDE THEATRE STUDIO Before I go into Theatre Studio, a friend from Esplanade will greet me. If I have a bag, my Esplanade friend will check my bag before I enter the Theatre Studio.

AT THE THEATRE STUDIO After my bag has been checked, more friends will greet me. These friends will have blue aprons on. I can ask them for help.

THE USHER When I walk into the theatre, another friend from Esplanade will greet me. This person is the usher. The usher is friendly. The usher helps people by showing them where they can sit. Together with my teacher, the usher will show me where I can sit.

ACTORS An actor is someone who acts. Actors can become many different characters during a show. During the show, I will see many different characters.

This is Fatimah.

This is Grandpa.

This is Sean.

This is Auntie May.

This is Mr Black. He is always dressed in black!

This is Mr Red. He is always dressed in red!

This is Mr Minismen.

These are children from the neighbourhood. They live in Fatimah s neighbourhood.

These are working adults from the neighbourhood. They too live in Fatimah s neighbourhood.

These are elderly folks who live in Fatimah s neighbourhood.

These are other people who live in the neighbourhood.

INSIDE THE THEATRE This is the theatre. A theatre is a room where the actors do their work.

INSIDE THE THEATRE The theatre will be dim. However, some lights will be turned on to help me find my way.

SEATING. I can sit in these quadrangles. There are 4 of them. I can sit where the red arrows are pointed at.

PERFORMANCE SPACE A performance space is where the actors do their work and move around. When the show begins, the actors will be moving around me. *Connect to the internet and click on the image above to go to the video.

DURING THE SHOW MOVING ABOUT If I need to get up and move during the show, that is OK. If I need to get up and go to the toilet during the show, that is OK too. My teacher or an usher can show me where the toilet is.

DURING THE SHOW The lights and sounds will change throughout the show. Sometimes the theatre will be dim and sometimes it will be bright and filled with colours. Sometimes it will be soft and sometimes, some sounds are louder than usual.

THE STORM IS COMING During the show, people from the neighbourhood will be caught in a storm. There will be lightning and thunder and it will be a little louder than usual. *Connect to the internet and click on the image above to go to the video.

SHADOW WORK During the show, I will see shadows at the sides of the tent.

RAINBOW LIGHTS During the show, there will be lights of different colours at the side of the tent. *Connect to the internet and click on the image above to go to the video.

MUSIC AND SONGS The actors will also sing many songs. I can sing along to the songs and move to the music if I want to. This is the song Home. *Connect to the internet and click on the image above to go to the videos.

CLAPPING DURING THE SHOW People may clap during the show when they like what the actors are doing. People don t clap for a long time. They clap only for a while. If something makes me happy and I want to clap, that is OK. If the clapping is too loud, I can cover my ears. If I feel uncomfortable and want to leave the theatre during the show, that is OK too!

DURING THE SHOW Calming Space If I need to leave and look for a quiet place, that is OK. I can go to the calming space.

AFTER THE SHOW After the show ends, the lights will come back on. The theatre will be bright again. After the show ends, I can leave the theatre. My teacher will take me back to school. People will leave the theatre when the show is over. It might get crowded. I will wait for my turn.
