A change of selection cannot be made or announced as a change on the stage at performance time. A participant doing so will perform as Non-Competitive for that class. See General Rules at front of Syllabus. SPEECH AND DRAMATIC ARTS RULES 1. Originals MUST be presented to the secretary at time of performance. When a selection is edited, a clean, typed copy of the edited version MUST be presented to the Adjudicator at time of performance, with the original. * NO ILLEGALLY REPRODUCED MATERIALS PERMITTED IN THE PERFORMANCE HALL. INTERNET DOWNLOADED PIECES MUST STATE PUBLIC DOMAIN ON EACH PAGE OR HAVE A RECEIPT OF PURCHASE ATTACHED TO THE DOWNLOADED SELECTION. 2. Selections MUST have appropriate/acceptable language and content that is suitable for all age levels of participants and audience. MATERIAL THAT CONTAINS OBSCENE, VIOLENT, SUGGESTIVE, OR SEXUALLY EXPLICIT LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION. 3. Editing for length and/or content is encouraged. See Speech and Dramatic Arts Rule 1. 4. No props or costumes are to be used except where specified. KFPA follows the rules for props and costumes as set out in the Provincial Syllabus for Speech classes. Please check the Provincial Syllabus at bcprovincials.com. 1

5. Participants MUST not receive assistance at the time of performance in any class. 6. Performance time MUST be marked on the entry form for all selections. All time limits MUST be strictly observed. 7. All solo entries MUST be memorized unless otherwise stated. 8. Solo entries in age groups 6 YEARS and UNDER and 7 to 10 YEARS are Non-Competitive performances. Participants in 7 to 10 YEARS classes are eligible for one (1) Adjudicator recommended scholarship. 9. Solo entries in age groups 11 to 23 YEARS are Competitive. ANY SOLO ENTRY CAN ELECT TO BE NON-COMPETITIVE. 10. In all classes, only age appropriate material is acceptable. See General Rule 21. NOTE TO TEACHERS: Age appropriate sample poems can be borrowed from the Henry Grube Educational Centre or the TNRD Library. DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE SOLO SCENE STORY READING CREATIVE STORYTELLING PUBLIC SPEAKING PUBLIC SPEAKING (EXTEMPORANEOUS) Participant is a single character. 9 and 10 YEARS. Time limit four (4) minutes. 17 and 18 YEARS. Time limit eight (8) minutes. 19 to 23 YEARS. Time limit ten (10) minutes. Editing for length and/or content is permitted. See Speech and Dramatic Arts Rule 3. 9 and 10 YEARS. Time limit four (4) minutes. 17 and 18 YEARS. Time limit eight (8) minutes. 19 to 23 YEARS. Time limit ten (10) minutes. Participants are encouraged to select material at own grade level or above. Participant may stand or be seated. Selected material may be edited for time. See Speech and Dramatic Arts Rule 1. Open to all ages. The Adjudicator presents a picture to the participant who then creates a story pertaining to the same. The participant will be given a quiet area for unassisted study. Participant may stand or be seated. Participants are encouraged to choose appropriate themes and subject matter. See General Rule 21. Preparation time limit five (5) minutes. Presentation time limit three (3) minutes. Oratory MUST be participant s original selection. In PUBLIC SPEAKING, proper use of notes is mandatory. Evidence of memorization could disqualify a speaker. Time limit five (5) minutes. 17 and 18 YEARS. 19 to 23 YEARS. A topic chosen by the Adjudicator will be made available to each participant approximately five (5) minutes prior to the class. Each participant will then be required to speak on his/her topic. Time limit two (2) minutes. Time limit two (2) minutes. 17 and 18 YEARS. Time limit three (3) minutes. 19 to 23 YEARS. SHAKESPEARE SOLO MIME (WITH MUSIC OR WITHOUT MUSIC) SIGHT READING ADULT SOLO NON-COMPETITIVE Time limit five (5) minutes. 17 and 18 YEARS 19 to 23 YEARS NO PROPS OR COSTUMES PERMITTED. However, a descriptive sign is permitted. Open to all ages. Time limit three (3) minutes. A prose selection suited to the age of the entrant will be provided by the Adjudicator at the time of performance. The entrant will read the selection aloud to the audience. Open to all ages. Preparation time limit one (1) minute. Presentation time limit three (3) minutes. Adults may enter any classes. Scenes may be edited or combined as long as Shakespeare s words are used. Costumes and props should be kept simple. 7

A quality performance is expected, but it is the poem that will be adjudicated. Non-Competitive. ORIGINAL POEM RULES 1. Enter the same grade or age category as you have in solo classes for Speech and Dramatic Arts. 2. Include a brief description of your poem. In your preamble, include what your poem is about and what it represents to you. 3. A clear photocopy of the handwritten or computer-generated printout of your manuscript MUST be mailed, emailed or scanned to the Festival at admin@kfpa.ca before FEBRUARY 15. Mail to: Kamloops Festival of the Performing Arts Attention: Registrar PO Box 162 Kamloops, BC V2C 5K6 4. DO NOT Submit Original Manuscripts. BRING A COPY of your work with you to the Festival (in case of lost files, illegible printouts that need verification, etc). 5. A quality performance is expected, but it is the composition that will be adjudicated. 6. All rights to the original works are retained by author. 8

For ONE (1) scholarship for 7 to 10 YEARS: Participants 7 and 8 YEARS MUST ENTER: One (1) class from STORY READING. Participants 9 and 10 YEARS MUST ENTER: One (1) class from DRAMATIC PROSE OR DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE. b. Participants 11, 12, and 13 YEARS MUST ENTER: One (1) class from DRAMATIC PROSE OR DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE AND One (1) class from SHAKESPEARE OR SOLO SCENE. c. Participants 14, 15, and 16 YEARS MUST ENTER: One (1) class from DRAMATIC PROSE OR DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE AND One (1) class from SHAKESPEARE OR SOLO SCENE. d. Participants 17 to 18 YEARS MUST ENTER: One (1) class from DRAMATIC PROSE OR DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE AND One (1) class from SONNET OR SONNET SEQUENCE AND One (1) class from SHAKESPEARE OR SOLO SCENE. e.
