Biography Rossen was born in New York, NY, Mar. 16, 1908; he began his career for the NY stage; moved to Hollywood (1939) as a contract writer for Warner Brothers and by the late 1940s was firmly established as the creator of some of America's most acclaimed films; his involvement with the Communist Party led to a subpoena from the House Un-American Activities Committee (1947); after "naming names" (1953), Rossen was allowed to continue working, but never returned to 87 2

Hollywood, choosing instead to work in other locations; he won an Academy Award for Best Picture (1949) with "All the King's Men"; his numerous credits include such films as "The Roaring Twenties" (1939), "The Hustler," and "Lilith" (both 1964); died Feb. 18, 1966. Scope and Content Collection consists of materials related to the career of American writer, producer, and director Robert Rossen. Includes various versions of scripts, notes and research material, clippings, stills, and posters. Includes material from numerous projects including the motion pictures "Alexander The Great" (1956), "All The King's Men" (1949), "Body And Soul" (1947), "The Brave Bulls" (1950), "They Came To Cordura" (1959), "Edge Of Darkness" (1942), "The Hustler" (1961), "Lilith" (1964), and "The Sea Wolf" (1941), and the stage plays "The Body Beautiful," "The Cool World," "Corner Pocket," and a project titled "Cocoa Beach."
