BauNow. The Bauhaus and its future role for Israel and Germany
Our Project Abstract. 01. Upon reaching 100 years to the Bauhaus establishment, this project will join design master's students from Jerusalem and Dessau in crosscountries workshops that will generate joint design exhibitions in both Israel and Germany. During the course of this project designers will revisit Bauhaus ideas from a contemporary point of view. We will research through creative dialogues in a multidisciplinary environment, and explore the relevance of Bauhaus values to challenges of today. Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Anhalt University of Applied Sciences
In its curriculum, the historic Bauhaus merged three aspects: Technology 1 2 3 Social Questions Aesthetics
Only one aspect of Bauhaus has been surviving until today: Technology 1 2 3 Social Questions Aesthetics
We want to disrupt the notion of Bauhaus: Forget aesthetics, focus on values! Technology 1 Values 2 3 Social Questions Aesthetics
Today we are facing similar questions like in the 1920s. People are looking for answers on: Technology Social Questions Aesthetics Maker space
Today we are facing similar questions like in the 1920s. People are looking for answers on: Technology Digitalisation The designers role in Industrial revolution? (3d printing, slow made trend, what is the new mass?) Start-ups challenge global legal and economic rules. Studio Unfold l'artisan Élctronique
Today we are facing similar questions like in the 1920s. People are looking for answers on: Social Questions How can we foster access, participation and integration? Economic changes by digital disruption. globalisation? localisation? Will my job be killed by algorithms? Migration and immigration - new needs? Tempelhoff Refugee Camp, Berlin
Today we are facing similar questions like in the 1920s. People are looking for answers on: Aesthetics Meaningful life (Design to make a change). Simplicity (bikes, food, regionality): I want to be able to understand things. Hipsters movement. Mine Kafon- Low Cost Land Mine Detonator by Massoud Hassani
Our Research Questions. 02. Bauhaus invented a way how designers and industry tackled together to solve social challenges, mainly focused on architecture. As many modernist movements, it changed the game in a powerful, yet bold way. How much ideology, top-down decisions and exclusive behaviour does it need to make change?
Our Research Questions. 03. Given the role Bauhaus has played in Germany and Israel since the 1930s, we want to focus on those aspects: How can you design change? How can you renew societies by seeding knowledge about aesthetics? How can you foster ideas on a broad scale?
Anhalt University Dessau Hansen House Jerusalem Our Collaboration Agenda Bauhaus is a common ground in the two locations for participants to explore and compare in order to develop and detect new perspectives on design and society today for a shared future of people in Israel and Germany.
Our Methodology We want to work on different scenarios with the student groups (10 bilateral couples): Using disruptive methods driven by values of: DIY Movement / Maker Movement Open Source Movement The Slow Movement (slow production, slow food, slow living) 1. Scenario Communities: Driven by Aesthetics or Ideas? Exclusive communities, driven by aesthetics. Inclusive communities, driven by ideas. 2. Scenario Immigration and habitats: from Alien to Familiar? Immigration and habitats - New conditions for men and space relations.
On-site Prespectives We will visit additional on-site perspectives, giving insights in Jewish-German lifecycles and heritage of the modernist era.
On-site Berlin Following the traces of modernity in Berlin: Looking how aesthetic values drive a community of old Berliners who live and take care about their iconic skyscrapers in the Hansaviertel district (built 1958). Portraits of people living in the Berlin Laubenganghäuser, designed by russian architect Ludmilla Herzenstein. A building in the Hansaviertel district, Berlin

Our Project s Deliverables. 04. We hope our joint project will raise a new design debate over the importance of the Bauhaus approach and its relevance to our societies today: designing objects and spaces by merging technological, aesthetic and social perspectives. Sharing and seeding knowledge!
Project s Seeding Platforms Results on show in both countries. Catalogue & Conferences We are going to publish insights in a publication (we are currently talking with renowned German publishing company DOM publishers), and produce a conference with all content gathered. Exhibitions We want to encourage the students to create tangible results as well as texts/ insights in form of objects, graphics, images, moving images and installations. Website We would like to set up a digital platform which gives access to our methods, toolkits, and insights.
Possible Parnters We would like to integrate collaborators and media partners to create the project s platforms
