COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Week 1 June 4-8, 2018 MUSIC AND LITURGY. MN2173. 1:00 4:30 pm. Monday-Friday. 2 hours credit. Focus on developing and refining musical skills (vocal and/or instrumental) for effective leadership of hymns, psalmody, choruses, and liturgies (from Evangelical Lutheran Worship, With One Voice, This Far by Faith, Hymnal Supplement 1991, or denominational equivalents.) Students will explore new music resources, discover how to make the music come alive in diverse styles and contexts, and create stylistic differences. Opportunities for applied learning. (Includes paper/project to be completed outside of class. Paper/project not required for auditors.) This course fulfills concentration core for M.A. in Church Music students. Professor May Schwarz, Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University, Columbus, OH. MEANINGFUL MOVEMENT: Experiencing Dalcroze Eurhythmics. MN. 5:00 7:15 pm. 1 hour credit. This experiential course will focus on the music education approach, Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Eurhythmics develops musicianship through singing, improvising, and purposeful and creative movement. Active music making is the core of this philosophy. Eurhythmics contributes to the development of the individual beyond musical skills as there is application and value intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Applications for the church musician will be emphasized throughout the course. M-F 2 hours credit A study of the music and worship forms of the African-American Christian tradition with emphasis on historical development, an understanding of the African-American aesthetic, and practical applications for congregational music and worship. M-F 1 hour credit Bell choirs, bell-ringing techniques, recruitment, organization, assigning bells, equipment needs, repertoire, and development of skills in bell-ringing. is course will be taught at Christ Lutheran Church, Bexley. MN 2373. 3:45 6:00 M-F. 1 hour credit This course will help worship leaders gain methods to deepen the worship experience for congregations by including children as active worship participants. We will identify worship activities for children of different developmental levels and personality types, with a focus on creating an environment in our churches where children are deeply valued, protected and safe. We will identify ways that a child s participation in church can support their spiritual growth, and the growth of an entire congregation. One credit hour. Provides opportunities for collaboration with worship planners and musicians, exploration of diverse and multicultural choral repertoire, and further skill development in choral conducting, worship planning, rehearsal organization, leadership, communication and music ministry. Involves participation in Daily Chapel. Available for credit only to MACM students who have demonstrated basic conducting skills through audition with the director of the MACM program.
