Outdoor Big Point TM The Outdoor Big Point is extremely versatile and can be used indoors or out. There are lots of ways to use it as it can be adapted to meet the child s interest. With a thirty second record time and a removable window panel, your own text or images can be added to aid activities or describe what children may hear. We know you ll think of lots of ways to use this exciting resource as you take ICT outdoors, but here are a few suggestions to get you started: Using Pre-recorded messages Make a Treasure Trail Leave clues recorded on the Outdoor Big Point for children to listen to and follow. You could use numbers or visual cues to help children follow clues in the right sequence. Leave a Message... Leave messages, jokes, instructions, greetings, puzzles etc. for children around your setting or classroom as part of a task or simply making your area more interactive. Display Making a talking wall, display, gallery etc. can now be taken outdoors with the Outdoor Big Point. Set a Challenge Outdoor Big Points can be used indoors or out to give instructions or challenges. Here are a few ideas we had: n Go and find something made of wood, metal, plastic etc. n Can you find something red, green, blue, etc. n Find something that is living, clear, opaque, shiny, etc. n Find something that is a circle, triangle, square, etc. What s Missing? Record rhymes and songs. Leave a message with the start of a rhyme for children to finish themselves. Alternatively, record a sentence and miss out a word, then ask children what is missing.

Talking Sequences Set the Outdoor Big Points in a line and make a talking number line or create other sequences for children to use. Record questions to develop thinking and enquiry what comes next in the sequence, or what is the odd one out? Make a Sound Wall Combine the fun with your outdoor music space to create an interactive music wall. Record found sounds such as bins being hit, the sound of a dog barking etc., then get children to create their own rhythms. With thirty seconds of recording space, you could also record beats and samples and play a song live. A Helping Hand Leave an Outdoor Big Point next to a task with suggestions, stimuli, ideas, etc. You could also leave questions to help children think about their interests and choices. What food do you like best? Where do you like to go, etc. Talking Calendars Make a talking calendar with the date, weather etc. Great for children comparing temperature or weather while still outside: This morning it s bright and sunny but quite cold could well turn into this afternoon it s wet and windy, especially at the turning of the seasons. Children Recording their own Sounds While there are lots of ways for you to pre-record activities, it s also easy for children to record their own messages. Here are a few ideas for using recording in learning: n Ask children to take the Outdoor Big Point with them to record their observations, findings, etc. n Record greetings, rhymes, suggestions etc. n Take home or into the local community to record greetings, songs or rhymes. This is great for Understanding the World, whether you are recording a traditional African song or comparing the range of accents from the UK. n Record a short song or rhyme that the children have made. n Record tunes or rhythms outdoors.
