INTRODUCTION Ths specfcaton covers the requrements for applcaton of the AMP-LATCH Ultra Novo Receptacle 40-Poston Connector for rbbon cable wth 80 conductors on 0.64 mm [.025 n.] centerlnes. These receptacle connectors are avalable wth center and mltary polarzaton or mltary polarzaton alone. The contacts housed n these receptacles are of the nsulaton dsplacement connecton (IDC) type. They accept matng headers or other pn connectors havng 0.64 mm [.025 n.]-square pns or 0.64 mm [.025 n.]-dameter round pns 6.1 mm [.240 n.] nomnal length. REQUIREMENTS 3.1. Storage A. Ultravolet Lght Prolonged exposure to ultravolet lght may deterorate the chemcal composton used n the receptacle connector materal. B. Shelf Lfe The connectors should reman n the shppng contaners untl ready for use to prevent deformaton to the connectors. The connectors should be used on a frst n, frst out bass to avod storage contamnaton. C. Chemcal Exposure Do not store contacts near any chemcals lsted below as they may cause stress corroson crackng n the contacts. Specal Characterstcs The AMP-LATCH Ultra Novo Receptacle Connectors are avalable n 3 colors. Most have a molded keyng plug n poston 20 to comply wth SFF-8049. The blue connector s grounded n poston number 34 and s used n a systems pc board; the gray connector has an open poston number 28 and s used as a devce (1) slave; and the black connector s for devce (0) prmary. Also, the cable connectng the blue and gray connectors must have poston 68 punched out. The gray receptacle connectors do not have a contact at poston 28. 2 of 8
3.3. Cable Selecton and Preparaton The IDC contacts n AMP-LATCH receptacles are desgned to accept PVC-nsulated cable wres wth 30 AWG copper sold conductors or 7/38 stranded tnned copper conductors. Insulaton materals other than standard PVC must be submtted to TE Engneerng for evaluaton before use. An ntal cut needs to be made usng a gullotne-type cuttng tool. See Fgure 2. Contact your TE Representatve for current tool recommendatons for cuttng and notchng of cables. A notchng procedure s requred when a crcut between two connectors s to be dsconnected. In ths case, the notchng sze and locaton have to be carefully determned. Contact the Product Informaton Center number at the bottom of page 1 for specfc nformaton on ths process. CAUTION! Care must be taken when algnng cable pror to termnaton to mantan perpendcularty between the length of the cable and the length of the connector. Polarzaton has been desgned nto the housng and covers. Receptacles wth dual slots (mltary) only can be used n all header and plug connectors. Those wth a combnaton of dual slots (mltary) and center slot polarzaton can only be used wth header or plug connectors that have a center polarzaton slot. See Fgure 4. All connectors that are used to make a cable assembly should all be of the same style; that s, all ODD GND or all EVN GRD. Conductor Wll Be Exposed and Deformed on Both Sdes Max Gap Between Housng and Cover (Typ Both Ends) See 0.51 [.020] Max : The gap between the cover and the housng may be 0.30 mm [.012 n.] max at any tme except at termnaton. Toolng should be set up wth proper pressure to ensure 0.00 mm [.000 n.] gap at termnaton. Inspect the cover and housng after crmpng for cracks or evdence of over crmpng. Cracks n the endwalls whch do not result n materal separaton are acceptable and do not affect connector functonalty. CAUTION! 3.6. Accessores Fgure 5 When removng the connector from ts' mate, grasp the ends of the connector and pull off. Do NOT apply force to the cable tself or rreparable damage may result. In applcatons where connector removal s lkely, t s strongly suggested that a stran relef and flexble pull tab, flexble pull-loop, or rectangular pull tab as descrbed n Fgure 8 be added to the connector assembly. B. Keyng Plugs Keyng plugs are desgned to be hand nserted drectly nto the contact cavtes. Correspondng pns must be removed from the matng connector. See Fgure 7. The pull-loop s nstalled between the stran relef and the cover n stran-releved applcatons. Unattached, nserton type of pull-tabs are also avalable for receptacles not employng stran relef. 4. QUALIFICATIONS AMP-LATCH Ultra Novo Receptacle Connectors are Lsted by Underwrters Laboratores Inc. (UL) n Fle E28476, and Certfed to CSA Internatonal n Fle LR7189A-615. 5. TOOLING Ths secton provdes a selecton of tools for varous applcaton requrements. Modfed desgns and addtonal toolng concepts may be avalable to meet other applcaton requrements. For addtonal nformaton, contact one of the servce groups at the bottom of page 1. There are manually operated and pneumatcally operated (auto-cycle and foot pedal actuated) arbor frame assembles desgned for bench mounted operaton. They accept standardzed upper/lower toolng assembles that have been desgned for the AMP-LATCH Connector-Specfc Kt. Instructon sheets coverng tool setup and operaton are packaged wth the toolng. See Fgure 9. There s one hgh producton automatc machne desgned to make cable assembles usng standard planar rbbon cable descrbed n Fgure 2. It s the R-CAM 4 whch termnates up to 10 connectors. The machne can accommodate varatons of the AMP-LATCH Rbbon Cable Connectors wth 0.64 mm [.025 n.] centerlne cable. A customer manual for setup and operaton s suppled. The machne wll test the cable assembles for contnuty and short crcuts as they are beng processed. See Fgure 9.
