The storyline is structured and clearly thought out. The story idea is original and imaginative and the resolution to the problem is very clever. The illustrations and colours that frame and support the story add to the reader s experience. The use of onomatopoeia and interesting fonts further enhances the story. A very enjoyable story demonstrating some sophisticated writing craft.
YEAR PP 2 PICTURE BOOK SECOND PLACE The Test Author: Amelia Pyle Individual entry Amelia s story gives a moral message in a creative and imaginative way, through the use of personification. Amelia has a clear grasp of the use of punctuation and makes use of interesting vocabulary to give effect and intonation to the reader. The effective use of expressive dialogue adds tension to the story. The detailed illustrations, particularly the facial features, add to the readers connection with the characters.
YEAR PP 2 PICTURE BOOK THIRD PLACE The Frog and the Big Bad Snake Authors: Grace Deisher and Charlie Lundie Mundijong Primary School Grace and Charlie have written a story with a lovely message about friendship. Personification is used successfully, revealing the snake as the bad character and the frogs as the good characters. This skillful writing adds tension to the story and helps to create more interest in the end when the characters help each other and become friends. Dialogue, interesting adjectives and simply drawn pictures support the storyline and add to its cohesiveness.

Author: Jeremiah Wang Individual entry Jeremiah has successfully used descriptive and sophisticated language to create an authentic and original adventure story. He has incorporated a range of font styles and colours to enhance the text and his placement of illustrations and text demonstrate the extent of the thought and planning that has gone into the preparation and writing of the book. A wonderful book to read and share with others.
YEAR 3 4 PICTURE BOOK SECOND PLACE The Fussy Cat Authors: Lovenia Anggadjaja and Izelke Nagel Rehoboth Christian College Lovenia and Izelke have worked effectively to create a lovely story based on a moral. Their writing demonstrates imagination, creativity and an original approach to the topic. The illustrations are extremely detailed, colourful and expressive, enhancing and supporting the storyline. The book is well bound and there is plenty to see and discuss and the story progresses towards its end.
YEAR 3 4 PICTURE BOOK THIRD PLACE The White Flamingo Author: Tiffany Wong Freshwater Bay Primary School Tiffany has created a believable city setting using colourful illustrations and descriptive text. As with any true picture book, Tiffany has let the pictures to tell the story and while the text supports it. The use of speech bubbles and musical signs break up the usual page set up and create added interest for the reader. The White Flamingo is a lovely book to read to or with friends and family.
YEAR 3 4 STORY BOOK FIRST PLACE My Brother s Brilliant Brain Author: Madeleine Mayo Presbyterian Ladies College It is obvious that Madeleine has a close connection with the main character in the story. Her writing conveys interest through the use of selective language and simple explanations. The story is powerfully written, using an expressive and authentic voice to tell the story of Jack and his naughty neurons. The story is very revealing, highlighting Jack s different approach to life and the effort needed to make his naughty neurons behave. Presenting Jack as having a brilliant brain was original and thought provoking.

Her use of a prologue to create the story setting was clever and collage style presentation of information supports the reader s connection with the story and its characters. The blurb is carefully written, revealing the context and enough of the plot to engage interest. The book is beautifully presented, in keeping with the time period. It is evident that Jessica has completed careful research to ensure the authenticity of her writing.

The topic and writing style evoke an emotional response from the reader. The words paint vivid pictures and the sepia coloured illustrations complement the storyline. In a few pages, using carefully selected language, Orlando has presented the atmosphere and tragedy of war and its effect on one survivor. The endpapers in the book are beautifully suited to this inspiring story..

This well constructed rendering of a familiar theme results in a very engaging book where illustration and text are balanced and complement each other to tell the story very successfully. Their mature use of imagery Teachers cut the crowds like hooks through fish. and controlled use of language add to the success of the story.
YEAR 5 6 STORY BOOK FIRST PLACE The Mystery of the Ghost Ship Author: Jesse Newill Individual entry Jesse has created an authentic novel complete with appropriately named chapters and including all of the conventions of a published book. The story is an impressive piece of sustained, cohesive narrative that is well structured and uses humour and suspense to develop the plot. The excitement level is maintained through the use of cliffhanging events. It is a carefully executed, creative and well paced story with detailed description that draws the reader in.

This deceptively simple story is charmingly humorous and cleverly structured. Harry s confident use of the conventions of narrative and descriptive language engage the reader. The black pen illustrations support the text and add to its overall appeal. His story is entertaining and clever in the way it holds the reader s interest through to the inevitable conclusion where Sammy lives up to his name.

Author: Sarah Lawrence Individual entry Sarah has created an imaginative and cohesive story where characters from the original Harry Potter series are successfully integrated into her well-structured and well-written novella. The effective use of dialogue helps develop the characters and the story. Sarah has taken advantage of the mystery of the source Hermione s magical abilities and explained her talents in an authentic prequel to the series. JK Rowling would be impressed.

She has chosen a simple writing form and explained each event clearly and with gentle understanding. As with any good picture book, the story can be told using the pictures. This book would make an excellent teaching tool, with clever ideas including the worry jar to help children cope and bold text when key words were used.

The evocative text paints vivid pictures of the disturbing uniqueness of James, the main character. The narrative flows freely around James, as do the events in his life, moving forward at an inescapable pace. Salina s writing entraps the reader and he seeks a solution as keenly as James. Salina sustained the mood until the end no fairytale artificial ending here.
