Why an Acoustically Transparent screen? üall commercial theatres use it üall sound to film studios use it for mixing üwhen you see an actor speaking, you expect the sound to come from his or her mouth and from nowhere else üthe coherence between the sound and the image is essential at any time. When it travels across the screen, it becomes crucial: üthe acoustic environment of a loudspeaker located very near to the floor or to the ceiling is disastrous 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 2
Sound vs Image with solid screen The speakers can only be placed around the screen. The image travels across the screen following a straight path, while you perceive the sound travelling down and then up, which is incoherent and therefore sounds wrong 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 3
Sound vs Image with Acoustically Transparent screen The speakers can be placed behind the screen, as originally intended in the soundtrack and the image and the sound remain in perfect coherence and sounds right generating a real cinematic experience 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 4

What kind of A.T. screen? Micro perforated screen Woven screen A solid, perforated material with very tiny holes is used to let the air, and sound to flow through. A synthetic woven fabric is used that allows the air and the sound flow through. 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 6
The sound can only go through the holes punched in the screen material, representing about 6% of its surface. This means 94% of the sound is reflected backwards The insertion loss can be > 10dB! Micro perforated screen materials The red trace is the response of the speaker alone. The black trace is through a micro perforated screen 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 7
The sound diffracts around the woven threads to make its way through the screen surface. No sound is reflected backwards. The insertion loss < 1dB! How about that moiré? Moiré effect is one of the greatest challenge in designing a good acoustic projection screen since the appearance of the fixed pixel projectors. It appears when the projected pixels pattern (grille) hits the similar size and/or order pattern of the screen, formed by the holes or weaves of the material, and creates vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines (artefacts) that really diminish the picture quality. In extreme cases it looks like the picture is being viewed through the mesh on a screen door, as seen here on the right. Moiré does not necessarily occur with micro perforated screens or with other woven screens, but simply, it can The probability increases as the resolution gets higher Screen Excellence Enlightor woven surfaces are 100% immune to moiré effect even beyond 4K resolution due to their extremely fine weave. 20/06/2017 Copyright 2017 Screen Excellence 10
