Hint UNIT A You can find more detailed information about formatting term papers in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. In addition, term papers include references to the sources used to write the paper, as well as a bibliography or a works cited list. Most term papers are formatted according to one of the three common styles: MLA, APA, and Chicago. UNIT A Term Paper (continued) Add and Format References Most term papers include references to the books, articles, and Web sites that the writer consulted while writing the paper. A paper formatted in the MLA style includes source information in the body of the term paper at the location where the source is cited. In the MLA style, source information is included in parenthesis and follows the author-page format. For example, a quotation from page 460 of a work by James Watson would be cited as (Watson 460). Some exceptions occur. If you provide the name of the author in the sentence preceding the citation, you include only the page number in the parenthesis. If the citation references a quotation from the literary work that is the subject of the paper (for example, Pride and Prejudice), then only the page number is included. You also need to italicize the title of any book included in the text of a term paper. First, you use the Find and Replace function to find every instance of Pride and Prejudice and replace it with Pride and Prejudice, and then you insert a citation to a new source that you create and a citation to a source already associated with the term paper. Trouble Click Yes if a warning box opens. Word 10 Steps: 1. Click Replace in the Editing group, type Pride and Prejudice in the Find what text box, click More if necessary to expand the dialog box, click Format, click Font, click the Underline style list arrow, click the underlining style shown in Figure A-10, then click OK You have established that Word should search for every instance of Pride and Prejudice formatted with underlining. 2. You also need to ensure that the current citation style is set to MLA. 5. Click the References tab, click the Style list arrow, then click MLA Sixth Edition to select it 6. Click Insert Citation in the Citations & Bibliography group, click Add New Source, verify that Book is selected as the Type of Source, enter the information for the source as shown in Figure A-12, then click OK The name of the author (Faye) appears in parenthesis. Hint Word 12 UNIT A You need to carefully check the MLA Guidelines and your entries to ensure your citations follow standard MLA citation formatting, and you should not rely solely on the software for correct formatting. Additional Practice For additional practice with the skills presented in this project, complete Independent Challenge 2. Term Paper (continued) Add a Works Cited List On a new page following the last page of your term paper, you can insert a bibliography or a works cited list. A bibliography lists all the sources you consulted when writing the term paper, even if you did not quote them in the paper. A works cited list includes only the sources you quoted. You edit some citations, view the citations in the Manage Sources dialog box so you can edit the sources, and then generate and update a works cited list. Steps: 1. Click (Faye), click the Citation Options list arrow, click Edit Citation, enter 113 in the Pages text box, click all three check boxes in the Suppress area as shown in Figure A-13 to select them, then click OK Only the page number appears. You do not need to include the name of the author because the author name appears at the beginning of the sentence that includes the citation. 2. Press [Ctrl][End] to move to the end of the paper, then press [Ctrl][Enter] to insert a page break 3. Click Bibliography in the Citations and Bibliography group, click Works Cited, then scroll up to view the list of works cited The list of works cited in the term paper appears. Two of the entries are incorrect. The entry for Faye should be listed as Le Faye and Jane Austen should be listed as Austen, Jane. 4. Click Manage Sources in the Citations & Bibliography group, note the list of citations on the right side of the Source Manager dialog box, click the entry for Faye, then click Edit 5. Select the contents of the Author text box, type Le Faye, Diedre, click OK, then click Yes Because Le is part of the author s last name, you need to enter the name exactly as you want it to appear in the Works Cited list. 6. Click the entry for Jane Austen, click Edit, change Jane Austen to Austen, Jane, click OK, then click Yes if prompted Normally, you can enter the first name and last name in the Author text box in the Create Source dialog box and Word will insert the source in the last name, first name format in the works cited list or bibliography. In a source that includes more than one author, however, the name of the first author should be listed in last name, first name order, and the names of the other authors should be listed in first name, last name order. 7. Click Close, click Works Cited, then click Update Citations and Bibliography The entries for Diedre Le Faye and Jane Austen are now correct. 8. Scroll up and click in the document, search for history and geography, then verify that the citation now reads (Le Faye 87-88) The Works Cited list should be double-spaced. 9. Close the Navigation pane, scroll to the Works Cited list, select the text in the Works Cited list from Works Cited to the end of the source for James Thompson, right-click the selected text, click Paragraph, click the Line spacing list arrow, click Double, then click OK 10.
