Lans-en-Vercors: Locus Solus Press, Five issues bound in four octavo volumes. Perfect-bound printed wrappers; 167, [1]; 205, [3]; 294, [2]; 184 pp. Issue I fine; issue II a bit dust-soiled with some browning and creasing to the spine; issue III-IV spine a bit sunned; issue V small crease to lower front corner. A clean, solid set. A complete run of this extremely important literary journal. Issue V is scarce. Clay and Phillips noted it presented no manifestoes or editorial statements, just high-quality literature simply and elegantly presented with care and respect (Clay and Phillips, p.169). Schuyler edited issues I and V, Koch II, and Ashbery III-IV, with Mathews serving as publisher and oracle. An exemplary and defining publication. $ ASHBERY, John. John Ashbery. San Francisco: Peoples Internationalist Publishing Conspiracy, First edition. [57] pp. Mimeographed sheets in a brad-bound plastic-covered folder. Minor handling wear, lower corner of plastic cover bumped. As Benedetti writes in his introduction, this book has been generated by a program I wrote to find out how creative a computer could be on its own. The program takes 800 words sent in by 80 writers and friends, and 1500 words I added, and constructs sentences. The word list, coded for part of speech, is shuffled often, and random number generators are used to drive the variations in word choice and syntax. The participants include Leslie Silko, Tom Raworth, Joanne Kyger, Leslie Scalapino, Judson Crews, Ron Silliman, Lyn Hejinian, Robert Creeley, and many others. Who Was Lawrence ). He writes in his preface, We soon realize we are in the presence of a savage erotic consciousness, as if the lust-driven senses were suddenly awakened out of a hoary sleep of a thousand years, a youth shaken

5 awake by a rude medieval hand, senses still reeling, drunk in the hold of some slave ship, not knowing night from day nor sight from sound, the eye and the ear and the nose confounding each other, not yet knowing which function each was to take up in the quivering dawn. Hilton Als wrote in the New Yorker,...the book won the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism, but long before that it was passed around and praised by any number of readers who knew nothing, or next to nothing, about Nelson s interest in queerness, let alone lives like the ones her memoir grew out of and embodies. What those fans responded to most viscerally, perhaps, was the fact that it s a book about becoming, both mentally and physically about what it takes to shape a self, in all its completeness and disarray. Minor jacket bump at head of spine and front crease, else fine. Reprinted many times, the first edition is uncommon. $ NOTLEY, Alice. A Diamond Necklace. New York: Frontward Books, First edition. Black cloth clamshell case by Sandra Liddell Reese, with original acrylic painting by Harry Reese on front cover, housing ten folded sheets laid in a chemise wrapper. One of 43 copies printed. Drawing, prints, collages, typographic prints, painting, and collaged poems by Harry Reese. A major work of the press and author, incorporating multiple techniques and

9 methods. Betty Bright wrote of this production, Consider Arplines once more. This kind of book is far from a unilateral and univocal object. Its conceptual program engages chance and the legacy of Dada, and its voice is literally multi-vocal, as Reese uses French, German and English, thus varying the degree of comprehension for each reader. Add to that his playfulness with the readable (printed) and the once-invisible (revealed through the act of rubbing). Confronting non-english words, language itself becomes an element of mystery if you don t know the language, and, play, if you do, as punning wordplay can extend into concrete poetry. Reading Arplines we integrate touch and sound and sight, and add texture and scale and weight, all senses firing, and accumulating in time: this, then, is the artist s book, the ultimate challenge to any simple dichotomy. Fine copy. Turkey Press 47. $ RICH, Adrienne. Adrienne Cecile Rich. The Fantasy Poets Number Twelve. Swinford: Fantasy Press, First edition. [8] pp. Stapled wrappers. First issue (of apparently two published) of a legendary little magazine. Yapped edges rubbed, especially at the lower corner. Contains work by Vito Acconci, John Giorno, Ron Padgett, Anne Waldman, and others, including J.G. Ballard s notorious Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan, the subject of several censorship battles, both upon its publication the previous year by the Unicorn Bookshop and two years later for its American appearance in The Atrocity Exhibition, which led to the initial edition being pulped. See also its acknowledged descendant, Henry Wessells Donald Trump: A Magazine of Poetry (2016), a manifestation of our current circumstances. $ [SOMBRE REPTILES PRESS]. Stanley Bummer [pseud. Darrell Gray]. Crabs. Berkeley: Sombre Reptiles, First edition. String-sewn wrappers. Minor edgewear, near fine. 10 53. SPICER, Jack. A Book of Music. San Francisco: White Rabbit Press, First edition, first issue, one of 1800 copies. Stapled printed wrappers. Near fine. $ STANFORD, Frank. The Battlefield Where the Moon Says I Love You. Seattle/Fayetteville: Mill Mountain Press/Lost Roads Publishing, First edition. 542 pp. Illustrated perfect-bound wrappers. Some rubbing and minor soiling to covers, spine a bit creased, very minor yellowing to prelims, but overall clean and tight. Of this book Ben Ehrenreich wrote, The world of Stanford s imagination- that unknown country where my dreams jump and shout - found its fullest expression in the work for which he is best known, The Battlefield Where the Moon Says I Love You. Like the lost text of some esoteric faith, many people have heard of it, but few have laid eyes on a copy. The Battlefield is a single poem, almost entirely unpunctuated, more than 500 pages long in its first edition, and until its reprinting in 2000 almost impossible to find. He continues, The Battlefield was likely cobbled out of work composed over at least a decade, but the carefully crafted enigma that surrounds it helped to build the Stanford myth- the backwoods prodigy and self-sprung genius, autochthonous fruit of the red Southern clay. Frank Stanford ( ) continues to cast a long shadow over a certain corner of American poetry. His work is expressionistic and surreal, forceful, unruly and eloquent, grappling with the ghosts of the South, race relations, childhood lost and experienced, and always the omnipresence of death. Born in Mississippi, raised in Memphis and Arkansas, he spent most of his life in small towns in the Arkansas Ozarks. Before he took his own life at the age of 29 he published seven books of poetry, collaborated on films, and co-founded (with C.D. Wright) Lost Roads Publishers, which continues to publish contemporary literature. Franz Wright has called him one of the great voices of death, and he earned praise from John Berryman, Alan Dugan, James Dickey, and Richard Eberhart. In 2015, Copper Canyon Press published What About This, a major volume of his collected poems, bringing his work to its widest audience yet. $ STANFORD, Frank. Crib Death. n.p. [Tucson]: Ironwood Press, First edition. Photographically illustrated perfect-bound wrappers. 55 pp. A posthumous collection from the legendary poet. Stanford s poems appeared widely in many journals, but all of his books were published by small presses and consequently have become very scarce. In the decades since his death his influence and mystique have only grown. Slight rubbing to extremities, near fine. $ STANFORD, Frank. You. Fayetteville: Lost Roads, First edition. 49 pp. Perfect-bound printed wrappers. Spine browned, old stain to top edge of rear cover. The second posthumous publication of Stanford s work, published as Lost Roads Number 15. Somewhat less uncommon than Stanford s earlier work published by Mill Mountain Press, but still rarely seen lately; a reprint edition was published in $350

[Philadelphia]: Middle Earth Books, [41] pp. Marbled sewn wrappers with printed label on front cover.
