2 Grades: Kindergarten to 12 th Grade The following books focus on areas of measurement: measurement of objects, perimeter, area, and volume. Included in the list are fiction and non-fiction books for upper, middle, and lower grades. Each item contains the title, author, publisher, ISBN, picture, WIDA proficiency level, Interest level, reading level, availability of different types of print, a synopsis of the book, and links to resources. 1. [ISBN: ] Genre: Non-fiction WIDA Proficiency Level: High Developing to Bridging Interest Level: 5-9 Reading Level: 5.0 Availability: Hardcover Math Measurement Word Problems: No Problem! is a young adult book that teaches students the skills and strategies needed to solve measurement word problems. The book includes all real world application problems. The book does a good job of high lightening important facts in each strategy so that it stands out to the reader. The book s layout and colorful pictures help for it to be a resource for ELL learners at the High Developing to Bridging levels. 3 Magnus Maximus, A Marvelous Measurer is a children s book telling the tale of Magnus Maximus the marvelous measurer who measures everything in sight. Magnus comes to be a hero after capturing an escaped lion from a local circle. With being a labeled a hero, Magnus becomes the town s official measurer. This new position takes a toll on Magnus. A day comes in which Magnus breaks his glasses and he is faced with dilemmas. The moral of the story is to remind us that the best things in life cannot be measured but to be treasured. The story is recommended for ELL learners who are Expanding to Bridging due to the advanced word usage and sentence structure. Though a children s book, the book has wonderful illustrations in which it can be used for all ages. Woodford, C. (2013). Measure up math: volume. New York, NY: Gareth Stevens Publishing. [ISBN: ] Genre: Non-Fiction WIDA Proficiency Level: High Developing to Expanding Reading Level: 4.0 Interest Level: 4-7 Availability: Hardcover, Paperback, ebook Measure Up Math: Volume delves into the topic of three dimensional measure of volume. The book is divided into sections that go through explaining the measure of volume to the volume of different shapes. The book also includes a hand on activity. There are a lot of colorful pictures and the layout of the book provides support to finding key facts. The book would be good for the Developing and Expanding levels of ELL learners due to the level of wording and sentence structures. The layout and pictures/diagrams help support ELL learners to visually picture what is being measured. Twelve Snails To One Lizard: A Tale Of Mischief And Measurement is a children s book about Milo Beaver who needs to fix his dam but is in a dilemma since he has nothing to use as a ruler. Bubba Bullfrog may just have the solution, one snail is equal to an inch and a lizard is equal to a foot. The book takes readers on adventure of Milo and Bubba fixing the dam. The book was chosen for Developing level ELL learners because vocabulary level is reasonable and the book s illustrations greatly help students to imagine the scenario. Me And The Measure Of Things is a children s book that introduces young readers to units of measure. Readers also learn the difference between dry and wet measurements. The book is narrated in first person perspective which helps young readers to understand. The Fattest, Tallest, Biggest Snowman Ever is a children s book about a boy and girl who challenge each other to build the largest snowman. In the end both kids end up with a tie, measurement tools are introduced to figure out who has the biggest one. Though classified as an easy reading book, the book is geared to Developing level of ELL readers since it is lengthy. The story is about Carrie who helps her grandmother with her knitting projects by measuring all sorts of things. The adventure continues when Carrie decides to knit something herself. This book can be used with ELL students of the Entering level (especially those who are Spanish) to Developing level since there are many resources for the book, such as Audio CD and Spanish version. They have moved into a new home and go on a quest to find out who has the biggest window and the biggest room. The book is geared toward ELL students who are at the Emerging level due its simple sentence formation and visuals that demonstrate how students can find area. The book can meet Entering to Developing levels of ELL students due to its bountiful resources which include audio CD and a version in Spanish.
