THE VALVE VALUE OF SONS AND DAUGHTERS AMONG THE GURUNGS N NEPAL Narayani Tiwari ntroduction This paper paper' addresses the issue on the value Calue of sons daughters the Gurung village where the fieldwork was carried out. The conceptual framework of this paper is based on theoretical literature about the fertility transition. n the literatures, questions are raised about the relationship between fertility value of children, as well as the relationship of high fertility with preference for sons or daughters. n this paper, the value of children the preference for sons or daughters is placed the context of household activities the role of sons daughters those activities. Literature review conceptual framework The value of children volves certa socio-economic, cultural religious factors, which sometimes conflict with the terests of the family the llheritallce l~t~zrita~~ce rules. The values attached to the role of sons daughters can fluence fertility trends. Various factors are responsible for the fertility patterns <;hanges changes elsewhere. Many demographers (Davis (D~vis Blake 1956; Bongaarts 1978; Freedman 1987; Jones 1990; Caldwell 1996; Clel 1993; Vol 1998; Crow Allan, 2001; Sgh et a., al., 2(03) 2303) have noted factors affectg fertility through proximate variables (Bongaarts 1978) or termediate variables. These can be clustered to three groups: first, variables relatg exposure to tercourse; second, variables relatg to conception;, third, variables relatg to pregnancy outcome (Jones, 1990). Age at marriage is an important variable the first cluster, the use of contraception is an important one the second cluster socio-economic cultural factors affectg fertility are placed the third cluster. Authors like Karki (1988), Niraula Morgan (1995) Riley (1999) have reported that the meang of masculity femity p~triarchal pjtriarchal society is often such that it contributes the population growth. The meangs value attached to masculity femity will fluence parental vestments sons daughters. While the latter should be equal, this is often not the case (Sieff, 1990; Casimir Dutilh, 2003).
