1 208 The New Zealand Entomologist, 1977, Vol. 6 No.3 Lionel Jack Dumbleton: Born in 1905 in Hampden, New Zealand, Jack passed away at Christchurch, after 6 years of indifferent health, on 25 September Jack's friends and interests were on a world scale, and in more than a hundred published papers he demonstrated his encyclopaedic knowledge of entomology, making major contributions to world, and in particular to New Zealand, scientific knowledge. His writings covered detailed observations on many aspects of practical entomology, always at a basic level. In particular, he made major contributions to the biology and systematics of the Aleyrodidae, Blephariceridae, Hepialidae, Ixodoidea, and Simuliidae. In less voluminous papers, he was equally at home with material on pest species, such as the spruce aphid, or providing a key to the species of Typhlocybinae (Leafhoppers) of New Zealand. Such a cosmopolitan knowledge of entomology marked Jack as one of the "old school" of broadly trained and widely experienced workers. His interests in geology and botany rivalled that of the specialists, and his love of mountaineering

2 The New Zealand Entomologist, 1977, Vol. 6 No showed him as a robust and independent character. All these aspects of his life were synthesised in what must become a lasting contribution : "Winter Dormancy in the New Zealand Biota and its Palaeoclimatic Implications". Formal details of Jack's career would be a poor substitute for an account of Jack's very human attitudes. Always frank, even about his own lack of knowledge on some questions, most of his colleagues found him a ready source of entomological answers. To enter his room with a query was always a warming experience. It was as though computerised knowledge was on tap, and his mental retrieval system functioned unerringly to produce a reprint or a reference which would help. If you were interested in entomology, he was interested in your query, be it at an elementary or an elevated level. Just on the eve of his retirement, a stroke interferred with Jack's usually robust health. But it failed to stop him working. Always a right-hander, and with that whole arm incapacitated, and for a time almost without powers of speech, Jack's partial return to health found him typing with his left hand, finishing some major papers, and caring for his house and grounds. To arrange the loan of a microscope and dissecting tools for the dissection of mouthparts of larval Simuliidae, while he was still partly disabled, and to see his illustrations completed as a result, was to realise just how deep Jack's interest and determination was. He will always be remembered as a colleague of ability and quality. He was a foundation member of both Eniomology Division, DSIR, and of the Entomological Society of N.Z., being a Past President of the latter. He is survived by his wife Alice, his daughter (Majorie Sutton) of Hobart, and two sons (Evan and Alistair) of Wellington.
