[1] DAMPIER, Captain William. A Voyage to New Holland, &c. In the Year, London, James Knapton, Octavo, pp. [xxiv], 162, [14] (index and advertisements) + 16 plates and maps (one folding); a handsome copy in mottled calf, gilt dentelles, spine with raised bands and elaboratey gilt in compartment, double contrasting labels, all edges gilt. $6600 FIRST ENGLISH VOYAGE TO NEW HOLLAND First edition of one of the classic pre-cook voyages to Australia or, as it was then known, New Holland. Dampier was the first Englishman to visit the coasts of Australia in January 1688 but remained only a very short time, nonetheless making a survey of the north-west coast near King Sound. After the first volume of his voyages had been published to great public acclaim in 1697, Dampier was given the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy and command of the Roebuck to undertake the first British expedition specifically directed to the exploration of New Holland in He explored the west coast of New Holland, giving a very uncomplimentary report of what he saw, returning to England by way of New Guinea in Generally regarded as the greatest English explorer and navigator before Cook, Dampier was also a popular and an exciting storyteller who inspired both Swift and Defoe. His books went through many editions and, in some form, have remained in print until the present day. It is said that his account of the Aborigines inspired Swift s description of the Yahoos. Importantly, Defoe was inspired by Dampier in his creation of Robinson Crusoe, as well as for other works such as his A New Voyage round the World, by a Course never sailed before of The first edition of Dampier s voyage to New Holland and this appears to be the first time that any navigator s work was so titled in any language is now very scarce. Davidson, pp. 31-3; Hill 2, 420.

[2] NORTHERN TERRITORY An exceptional, and essentially complete, collection of official papers on the first permanent settlement of the Northern Territory, bound for the Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, Adelaide, Government Printer, pieces and manuscript index, foolscap folio, pp. 296 (pagination various, numbered by the binder), 14 folding plans and maps (some foxed and one or two with clean marginal tears); bound in semi-limp dark green calf by the Government Printer s bindery (unsigned), boldly lettered in gilt on the front board, marbled endpapers; a few trivial scuffs to the calf, a fine, crisp copy. $7700 An important assemblage of official papers and maps relating to the earliest permanent settlement of the Northern Territory of South Australia. This fine volume was bound for the Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, between 1889 and 1895, confirmed by an early manuscript note. As Governor, he was assiduous in his support for the development of the recently acquired Territory and his first major public undertaking was an overland trip from Darwin to Adelaide in 1891 and a tour of Katherine, Daly Waters, Tennant Creek, and Alice Springs. It is not too much to suggest that this volume was assembled for him by his officials in preparation for that tour. The collection is virtually a First Fleet document for the Territory. It includes the most important papers relating to the settlement of the Northern Territory, including the explorations of McKinlay, Cadell, Favenc and Crawford, papers on the disastrous Escape Cliffs settlement, papers and maps from the survey of Darwin (Palmerston), and so on. Of particular note are the five papers and associated maps relating to John McKinlay s highly important and near fatal expedition to examine the unexplored country near the north coast. The maps accompanying McKinlay s journals are the earliest maps of the areas he explored. There was no separate public account of this expedition and so these five rare papers comprise the only published record. Of great importance for the history of the Territory are the series of fine maps prepared by the Goyder s survey expedition These include THE FIRST MAP OF POST-SETTLEMENT DARWIN. This large folding map, General Plan showing Natural Features of the country,

towns, reserves, roads & sectional lands at, and in the vicinity of Port Darwin, Northern Territory of South Australia surveyed during 1869 by Mess rs. Woods... under direction of the Surveyor General (folding lithographed map, approximately 860 x 750 mm. Adelaide, Surveyor General s Office, March 1870), is the first complete survey plan of Darwin an interim and sketchier map was issued in November 1869 as no. 161 in the S.A. parliamentary papers for This rare and important map was issued with six other folding maps (one printed in colours) as no. 204 in the S.A. parliamentary papers for The other maps in this very rare paper comprise a series of maps of settlements and townships Palmerston, Southport, Virginia, and Daly. Again, the earliest maps of these towns. The volume also includes the (finally) final General Plan of Port Darwin that was issued in October 1872 by the Surveyor General s Office (approximately 870 x 625 mm), which takes account of some supplementary detail includes among the seven maps of paper 204 just mentioned. Like all these early settlement maps, this too is rare.

[3] WOODS, Julian E. Tenison-. North Australia: Its Physical Geography and Natural History. Adelaide, Government Printer, Octavo, pp. [viii] (first leaf blank), 46, [2] (blank); a fine copy, in a handsome binding of quarter red morocco and cloth sides. $330 First edition: rare. Designed fully to inform those who wished to know more about the new Territory, which had just come under the control of South Australia by virtue of John McDouall Stuart s conquest of the south-north crossing. More especially for those who intended to exploit its scientific and commercial possibilities, based on extensive research. Ferguson, (not noting the initial and terminal blank leaves). [4] CLARKE, William Branwhite. On the Progress of Gold Discovery in Australasia, from 1860 to 1871 [drop title]. [Sydney, The Author (?), 1871]. Octavo, pp. 24 (last blank); some spotting and soiling but a very good copy, sewn as issued (sewing slackening), early signature of one M.W.S. Clarke at the top of the first leaf. $275 Rare. Reverend William Branwhite Clarke was an outstanding amateur geologist, deservedly known as the Father of Australian geology, who was devoted to geological exploration and speculation. He was one of the earliest discoverers of gold in Australia, having found gold at Hassan s Walls in In September 1851 Clarke began an extensive official geological survey of New South Wales. Travelling with two assistants, he completed the survey in mid-1853 and published the important reports of his work in the parliamentary papers. A more public form of his reports was published in Sydney in 1860, at his own expense, Researches in the Southern Gold Fields of New South Wales. Clarke hoped to publish a major work on the geology of Australia but could not raise the necessary capital. Consequently, Researches in the Southern Gold Fields is his key work on the geology of Australian gold. This closelyprinted 1871 pamphlet details progress in the decade since his Researches was published and is an important supplement to it. Like most gold rush pamphlets, it is rare. Ferguson, 8345.

[5] [COPPIN, George Selth] E.V. WADDINGTON & Co., Photographers. The Coppin Portfolio [cover title]. Melbourne, Waddington & Co., n.d. but Portfolio of duodecimo dimensions (178 x 120 mm), enclosing seven sepia albumen paper prints of studio card (161 x 108 mm); original plum cloth portfolio, lettered and decorated in gilt, some flecking; an excellent set, the photographs fine. $1650 Extremely rare: this privately-published portfolio comprises seven actual photographs of pre-eminent Melbourne actor-manager George Seth Coppin, one a straight portrait and six in costume as his favourite and most successful characters, each one signed and captioned by Coppin. The portfolio is inscribed with Coppin s compliments and thanks to Mrs J.C. Williamson at the Matinee Testimonial for Coppin at the Theatre Royal on Dec 10th 1881, with the small playbill for this performace mounted on the back board. Coppin s own armorial bookplate, dated 1860, as M.L.C in the Victorian parliament, is also pasted in below the inscription (as it is in the one other copy we have been able to locate). This is, to our mind, the best imaginable copy of this rare little portfolio, marking as it does not only Coppin s departure from the stage but the passing of the baton from the greatest of Australia s first generation of actor-managers to the greatest of the next and subsequent generations, J.C. Williamson. Coppin had brought the American actor James Cassius Williamson and his wife, comedienne Maggie Moore, to Australia in 1874 with their hit play Struck Oil. In September 1881, with Coppin set on retirement, Williamson took over the lease of the Theatre Royal. Coppin then began his series of farewell performances, the most important of which were his dozen farewells to Melbourne culminating in this testimonial in which Mr. and Mrs. Williamson appeared in the celebrated farce, The Fool of the Family. The photographer Waddington was evidently commissioned to produce this celebratory portfolio at the time of the series of Coppin s retirement testimonials. The Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne, has the only other copy we have been able to trace: it is, also, a presentation copy inscribed and signed (and with the 1860 bookplate) to Henry Miller, J.P. in remembrance of his Richmond presentation, Theatre Royal Melbourne, Decr. 8th George Selth Coppin ( ), actor, politician, and entrepreneur, was born in England, arriving in Sydney in He proved to be an energetic actor-manager, impressario, and entrepreneur, who also took an active part in Victorian politics (as M.L.C. & M.L.A., ). In addition to his extensive theatrical enterprises, he acquired theatres and hotels, as well as Cremorne Gardens in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, and maintained a house in the Victorian seaside resort town of Sorrento, where he took an active interest in the town s development. The gold rush had brought Melbourne not only financial pre-eminence but also cultural pre-eminence and George Coppin stands with Sir Redmond Barry, Sir W. Baldwin Spencer, and G.W. Marshall-Hall as the commanding figures in Victorian cultural life in the later decades of the nineteenth century.

[6] HOGARTH HOUSE (publisher) Dandy Dick, or, The King of the Bushrangers [wrapper title]. London, Hogarth House, n.d. circa 1890s. Octavo, pp. 32, with engraved illustrations, printed in double column; fine in original illustrated wrappers. $770 A rare Boy s Blood set in Australia. Dandy Dick was one of the Hogarth House series of boy s adventure romances published at one penny. This is No. 1 or the Dandy Dick series. Hogarth House also published other bloods of Australian interest, including the Jack Harkaway series by Bracebridge Hemyng, and Blue Cap the Bushranger by James Skip Borlase. Their bloods were almost always anonymous and in this case, unlike the Hemyng and Borlase works, there is no external evidence as to authorship. Of their very nature and audience boy s bloods are rare and, in this condition, virtually unseen. [7] WINNECKE, Charles. Journal, etc., of the Horn Scientific Exploring Expedition to Central Australia (with plates and plans). Adelaide, C.E. Bristow, Government Printer, Foolscap folio, pp large folding map, three folding charts & 13 photographic plates; a fine copy in later half calf. $2200 Rare: publication of Winnecke s exploratory and surveying narrative printed in this parliamentary paper was suppressed following personal representations from William Austin Horn, the expedition s financier, to the premier after Winnecke and Horn had fallen out over finances. The Horn Expedition, to examine the country between Oodnadatta and the MacDonnell Ranges, was the most elaborate expedition of scientific exploration undertaken throughout the entire colonial era. Originally it was intended that Winnecke s narrative as leader of the expedition was to have been included in the four-volume official account edited by Baldwin Spencer. But Winnecke s dispute with Horn made that impossible and this parliamentary printing was published under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch) in conjunction with the Survey Department and the Minister for the Northern Territory. When this parliamentary printing was suppressed by the premier, Winnecke arranged general publication of the narrative himself in a public octavo format through Bristow in Adelaide in the following year. McLaren, 16973; see also Mulvaney and Calaby, So Much that is New, pp , for details of the suppression of this printing.

[8] PASCO, Crawford. A Roving Commission: Naval Reminiscences. Melbourne, George Robertson, Octavo, with frontispiece portrait and 23 other plates (one folding); very good in original navy blue cloth, front board with gilt nautical decorations, repeated on the back board in blind. $385 First and only edition: scarce, little-known and very important. Pasco s lively, anecdotal autobiographical account of his naval career from 1830 to 1852, when he emigrated permanently to Australia, settling in Melbourne. Pasco s experiences at sea included early years in European waters, the East Indies and on the South American station. Of the greatest Australian interest is his account of his appointment to H.M.S. Britomart, destined for service at the second settlement at Port Essington in Pasco s account of the early days of the short-lived settlement is one of the few published accounts. While at Port Essington he was appointed to H.M.S. Beagle, then on its Australian surveying cruise. Five chapters are devoted to those years ( ) in Australian waters. After several further voyages, including a surveying voyage in the China seas, Pasco retired from the Navy. Ferguson, [9] [FEDERATION] WALKER, James Thomas. Remarks on Federal Finance. Sydney, Hennessey, Harper & Co., Ltd, Octavo, pp. 16; a little tanning but very good in original wrappers. $220 Very scarce: a significant Federation piece by one of the more prominent proponents of Federation, A Delegate to the People s Federal Convention at Bathurst, And one of the Representatives of New South Wales in the Australasian Federal Convention, , as he states on the wrapper and title-page. Walker was most notably a prominent financier, reaching ultimately the presidency of the Bank of New South Wales, a position he resigned from upon being elected to the Senate of the Commonwealth Parliament in This is one of several pamphlets on constitutional and related financial matters he published in the years of the Federation debates. His proposals were somewhat superciliously dismissed by Deakin at the Adelaide Session of the Convention, but his programme was largely accepted at the subsequent Melbourne Session in preference to the ideas set forward by the politicians which were found to be quite impractical plus ça change

Pty., circa Small octavo, bi-folium on pink card, about fine. $125 Rare: priced list of footwear, boot and leather polishes, saddler s pastes, creams, blackings, dressings, and oils, Spooner note also that they were grocers and ironmongers but on this list they note only such items as furniture cream, knife polish, Maori Gloss, and similar treatments. [14] [OUTHWAITE] RENTOUL, Ida S. and Annie. Mollie s Bunyip by A.R. Rentoul and I.S. Rentoul. Melbourne, Robert Jolley, Oblong quarto, pp. [50], each leaf printed on one side only, with twelve full-page line-drawn illustrations and with titlepage vignette and page decorations in sepia throughout; a very good copy bound in half dark green morocco, gilt, retaining original pictorial wrappers. $3300 Rare: this was the very first publication of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, with handscripted text by her elder sister Annie. Essentially a private publication certainly one with a very limited circulation it was published when Ida was just sixteen. It is the story of Mollie s wanderings in the bush and her eventual rescue by the spirit of the friendly Bunyip. Ida collaborated with her mother on a second book, Mollie s Staircase, two years later in A somewhat fragile piece impractical when one considers its abusive original child audience Mollie s Bunyip is rare on the market.

[15] [OUTHWAITE] RENTOUL, Annie Isobel and Ida Sherborne. Mollie s Staircase by A.I. Rentoul and I.S. Rentoul. Melbourne, M.L. Hutchinson, circa Oblong quarto, [26] leaves, with full-page illust-rations throughout; the first and last leaf a little tanned from the wrappers, a very good copy bound in half dark green morocco, gilt, retaining original wrappers; the title-page with a Rentoul family presentation inscription. $2750 First edition of one of the earliest books by Australia s outstanding fantasy illustrator. Written by her mother, Annie Isobel Rentoul, this was the second published book illustrated by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. As Robert Holden has remarked of Mollie s Staircase, there is a quite discernible air of growing self-assurance... Ida s elves were evolving into her own distinctive creation and her dramatic use of silhouette was emerging as a major compositional device. For the first time she used fully enclosed picture frames with which to contain her action (Muir and Holden, p. 102).

[16] FEDERAL COUNCIL OF THE CHAMBERS OF MANUFACTURES OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. Australian Industry. For the Advancement of Australian Manufactures, and the Extension of Trade. Brisbane, Printed by H.J. Diddams and Published from the Offices of the Chambers: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Launceston, and Hobart, Quarto, pp. 338 in total (paginated in three sequences, the second of which repeats some pagination in error but not the content: pp. xviii, 60 + A A28(bis)-A31(bis) + A32-A56 + B1- B200), with illustrations throughout, correction slip at p. 43; chipped at the top and bottom of the spine and the fore-edge of the front wrapper a little worn, in other respects a very good, sound and clean copy. $385 Uncommon: a significant document of the Federal era, recording the early years of the somewhat remarkable achievement that brought together the individual Chambers of Manufactures of each colony now states who had self-evidently conflicting interests prior to Federation. The federated body, every bit as important in Australia s economic life over the next century as the opposing grouping of trade unions, still exists through several name changes and amalgamations as the peak employers body, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This substantial early volume includes the proceedings of the First and Second Conferences of the Federal Council, and a detailed and valuable survey of the activity of each manufacturing industry throughout the Commonwealth. [17] THOMAS, Northcote W. Kinship Organisations and Group Marriage in Australia. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, Octavo, pp. [ii] (blank), xiv, two maps (one folding), and a folding table; very good in original burgundy cloth. $125 First edition: an early work of scientific anthropology by a prominent scholar and later Government Anthropologist in Sierra Leone. This copy has unexpected associations: it was the copy of admired fin-de-siècle writer Pierre Louÿs with his ownership signature on free front endpaper, either bought from or sold to Shakespeare and Company, Paris, with their large stamp on the same endpaper, later bookstore label of Mistral Books and Prints, 37 rue de la Bûcherie, Paris.

[18] LYNDHURST, Fanny. The Confessions of a Singer. Melbourne, Bruce & Davies, Bourke Street, MDCCCCVI [i.e. 1906]. Octavo, pp one leaf of plates (frontispiece portrait); cheap paper tanned, a very good copy in expertly respined original dark plum wrappers, the front wrapper lettered and decorated in gilt. $550 Rare first edition: written for friends and pupils, Lyndhurst s work includes a narrative of her professional life, together with more didactic observations on the demands and duties of the professional singer. It is interesting to note that she also found herself obliged to defend herself against critics of her dress, style, and use of a professional name. Lyndhurst also demonstrates that, despite having performed over 500 times in the preceding decade, she was only able to support herself by taking students a circumstance still not unkown. ANB, 26942; Walsh and Hooton, II:319. [19] BARRETT, Charles. From Range to Sea: A Bird Lover s Ways. Melbourne, T.C. Lothian, Octavo, pp.68 (last blank), with illustrations in the text throughout; a very good copy in original wrappers by Ruby Lindsay. $220 Scarce: first edition of the first book by Charles Barrett, subsequently the author of over 60 books. The art nouveau wrapper design by Ruby Lindsay also makes this book of special interest. Undertaken before her departure for England, where she died shortly afterwards, it is one of the earliest of her tragically few illustrative works. [20] HADDON, Robert J. Australian Architecture: A Technical Manual for all those engaged in Architectural and Building work. Melbourne, George Robertson, n.d., but Octavo, pp. xxviii (advertisements), [xxix-xxxiv] (preliminaries), 544, xxxv-xlviii (advertisements, last blank) + one coloured plate and numerous sketches and plans in the text (many full-page); original dark olive green cloth, lettered in gilt and ruled in black; the cloth with some minor flecking, a very good, sound and clean copy. $550 First edition of the first Australian treatise on architecture, properly so called, preceded only by a few trade and technical manuals, and at least one elaborate pattern book.

[21] [OUTHWAITE] RENTOUL, Annie Rattray and Ida Sherborne RENTOUL. The Lady of the Blue Beads Her Book: Being an account of her first Blue Moon spent on Sun Island. Melbourne, George Robertson & Co., n.d. but Quarto, pp. 104, with illustrations throughout, many full-page, by Ida S. Rentoul [Outhwaite]; a trace of foxing but less than usual, the beige cloth lightly soiled but less than usual, a very good copy. $990 First edition of one of Outhwaite s first properly commercial book publications and now quite scarce. The text is by her elder sister Annie Rattray Rentoul and it follows two more or less privately printed brochure publications from the talented women of the Rentoul family, all illustrated by Ida before her marriage. [22] TASMANIA: MINIATURE NEWSPAPER. The Weekly Courier. Vol. 7, no. 89. Thursday March 26,1908. [Launceston, Henry Button, 1908]. 16mo (110 x 80 mm), pp. 40; stapled as issued, some edge wear to the outer leaves clear of the text, staple rusting (affecting the gutter of the last leaf only), a good copy $85 A special minute miniature edition of this Launceson weekly. Miniature newspapers were an affectation of the age but have now become quite uncommon and ephmeral pieces. The present example is rare, with only the Mitchell Library copy located (somewhat miscatalogued, with the issue misdescribed as No. 39, and the date of printing noted, Thursday March 19, 1908, rather than the date of record that is printed on the masthead (as transcribed above).

[23] DUTTON, Henry Hampden. Across Australia by Motor. Colophon: Adelaide, J. L. Bonython & Co. [for The Author], n.d. circa Oblong duodecimo, pp. [2] (title-page, verso blank) + 51 leaves of captioned photographic plates, and a folding map (before the title); about fine in little spine-sunned original green wrappers, the title on the front wrapper in red within a dark green frame, printer s colophon on the back wrapper recto, wrappers otherwise blank, overlapping edges, the spine with two trivial blemishes; important long additional manuscript note on the first leaf (see below). $2200 Rare: only edition of this private publication produced for family use as a record of the first crossing of the continent by automobile. An interesting family presentation copy, with a long narrative manuscript inscription recounting the story of the expedition by Helen Dutton (Mrs. Helen Blackburn), the daugher of H.H. Dutton. Included with the book is a holograph letter from Hele Dutton to the recipient, dated 27 August 1975, presenting the book and apologising for the long delay ( the delay being finding time to put the facts on the front page! ). Dutton, a scion of the notable Adelaide family, made this historic trip from Adelaide to Port Darwin accompanied by his mechanic, Murray Aunger, in a 25- horsepower Clement-Talbot over 51 days between 30 June and 20 August, The car, first named 474 and later Overlander, was driven again in 1958 by Dutton s two sons, John and Geoffrey, to repeat the journey, this time in ten days. Overlander is preserved in the Birdwood Mill Museum in South Australia. A postscript to Helen Dutton s letter notes the intriguing fact that Many of his best photos disappeared mysteriously before the book could be printed.

[24] BISHOP, J.E., and Co. (publishers). The Coachbuilder Book of Designs (Second Edition). Comprising engravings of popular Australasian vehicles with tables of measurements. Sydney, J.E. Bishop and Co., Quarto, pp. 260, with very numerous engraved illustrations, photographic illustrations and illustrated advertisements (one being a mounted chromolithograph); original red gilt with a few marks, an unexpectedly very good copy. $3300 Rare: an important, extensive and sought-after collection of Australian coach and carriage designs. First published in 1901 as the age of the horse was being replaced by the automobile. This second edition of 1909 is much enlarged and now includes motor cars. Both editions are very uncommon, especially in such good condition, despite the fact that thouands were distributed to the then quite extensive coachbuilding trade but these were books for practical trade use and their disappearance is due to changes of fashion and taste, society s transition to the motor car, and expected use. [25] OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul (illustrator). QUIN, Tarella. Before The Lamps Are Lit. Melbourne, George Robertson, n.d. but Oblong octavo, pp. [iv], 190, with frontispiece and 25 other full-page black & white illustrations by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, other illustrations in-text; near fine in original pictorial green cloth, lettered and decorated in red and black. $880 First edition. The classic account of Australian Antarctic exploration. Mawson s first expedition was an epic of endurance that is the most significant basis to Australia s claim to its extensive Antarctic Territory. The expedition charted the entire coastline between the Mertz Glacier and Grassberg, complementing earlier discoveries. Most importantly, they systematically explored King George V Land and the adjacent Terra Adelie. Mawson s book includes a self-effacing account of his epic journey across five hundred kilometres of Adelie Land in 1912, without a tent and most of his food, one of the great feats of human endurance (Richards). This edition not in ANB; Richards, 337; Renard, 1022; Rosove, 217.A1 (binding b no priority); Spence, 774.

[28] [GIBBS] MACK, Amy Eleanor. Scribbling Sue and other stories. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, n.d. but circa Octavo, pp. [x], 228, [2] (colophon, verso blank), 32 advertisements dated January 1916, last blank) + coloured frontispiece and four monochrome plates by May Gibbs; some foxing, original handsome gilt-decorated cloth with pictorial onlays, complete with the rare dustwrapper in excellent state (slightly spine-darkened and a little edge-rubbed). $1850 First edition: the rare and much sought first edition of this collection of tales for children, most notable for the early illustrations by May Gibbs which include early examples of her Gumnut people. [29] PRICHARD, Katharine Susannah. The Pioneers. London, Hodder and Stoughton, [1915]. Octavo, pp frontispiece; extremities of the boards a bit worn, very good in original very pale blue decorated series cloth. $220 First edition of Prichard s first novel, a powerful story of a young Australian-born son of Victorian emigrant parents who befriends two convicts. The novel won Hodder and Stoughton s 250 prize for the best Australasian novel. This copy is in the rare variant publisher s binding. [30] GIBBS, May. Little Ragged Blossom, & More About Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, n.d. but Quarto, pp. [vi], 98, [2] (colophon, verso blank) + colour frontispiece and colour plate following p. 42 and full-page illustrations throughout; very good in original cloth-backed boards. $245 First edition of the second book in May Gibbs s Gumnut series. [31] GIBBS, May. Little Obelia and Further Adventures of Ragged Blossom and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, n.d. but Quarto, pp. [iv], 92 + coloured frontispiece and pictorial title-page, with fullpage sepia illustrations throughout; hinges expertly strengthened, extremities a little rubbed, good in original cloth-backed colour-pictorial boards. $165 First edition of the third book in May Gibbs s Gumnut series.

[32] OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. The Fairy Story that Came True [wrapper title]. Melbourne, British Imperial Oil Co. Ltd, n.d. circa Small quarto, pp. 16, with five coloured and one black & white illustration; signs of light use, an excellent copy in original titling-wrappers. $3300 Rare: a fairy story produced to advertise Shell Oil, a significantly rarer and earlier companion to Outhwaite s better known The Sentry and the Shell Fairy. Outhwaite continued to produce similar commercial pieces but few with the same level of professional production as the pieces for Shell Motor Oil, which included two rare elaborately illustrated calendars as well as the fairy story, The Sentry and the Shell Fairy. [33] GIBBS, May. Nuttybub and Nittersing. Melbourne, Osboldstone and Co., Quarto, pp. [vi], 88 + coloured frontispiece, pictorial title-page, and 20 full-page sepia plates, illustrations in the text throughout; an excellent copy in original cloth-backed illustrated boards with colour pictorial onlay, illustrated endpapers (the Crotty copy, although without any mark of ownership). $440 First edition of this very scarce Gumnut story, the first of May Gibbs s books published by Osboldstone. [34] TURNER, Ethel S. and Jean CURLEWIS. The Sunshine Family... With over 150 Illustrations by D.H. Souter and H. Bancks and others. London and Melbourne, Ward, Lock & Co., n.d. but Quarto, pp frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text; as always a little spotting of the edges and endpapers owing to the absorbent paper but an excellent, bright copy in original cloth-backed pictorial boards. $1650 Rare: the first edition. Written in collaboration with Ethel Turner s daughter, Jean Curlewis, and reprinted from the Sunbeams supplement of the Sydney Sun newspaper, it is richly illustrated by D.H. Souter and C.J. Bancks, creator of Ginger Meggs (with his initials misprinted on the title).

[35] BOYD, Martin. Love Gods by Martin Mills. London, Constable, Octavo, pp. 320; a touch of foxing but an excellent copy in bright original primary black cloth, lettered and ruled in purple. $880 First edition of Boyd s rare first novel. Martin Boyd had a substantial international career as a novelist in the five decades from the 1920s to the 1960s. It is not too harsh to say that Australians rediscovered him in the 1960s when many of his earlier novels were reprinted and even set on High School English syllabuses. A member of the remarkable Boyd family of artists and writers, he had always attracted the attention of earlier generations of serious Australian collectors but wide appreciation of him dates from that decade and, consequently, his earlier novels have always presented a great challenge. [36] KINGSFORD-SMITH, Charles E. and Charles T.P. ULM. Story of Southern Cross Trans-Pacific Flight Sydney, Penlington & Somerville, Octavo, pp leaves of plates; endpapers with a trace of spotting, a very good copy in the original silver pictorial blue buckram, pictorial endpapers (gift inscripition on blank verso of the free front endpaper), with the rare, mildly edgeworn, colour pictorial dustwrapper (portion of the blank front flap excised). $330 First edition of one of the classics of aviation, Kingsford-Smith s own account of perhaps his most famous flight, from Oakland, California, via Hawaii and Suva to Brisbane, Queensland, between 31 May and 9 June This was the first trans-pacific aeroplane flight. The crew consisted of Kingsford-Smith, Charles T.P. Ulm, and two Americans, James Warner and Harry Lyon. The dustwrapper is of considerable rarity.

[37] HARRINGTONS Ltd. Catalogue of Home Movies. Sydney, HarringtonsLtd., n.d. but circa 1930 Duodecimo, pp. 12, illustrations; an excellent copy in original wrappers. $145 Uncommon. Harringtons was one of the first major Australian companies to deal with photographic and cinemarelated products. Describing themeselves as Photo, Radio, and Cine Merchants, the firm was at the cutting edge of new technological developments, importing home movie cameras and projectors and even offering a same day photographic development service in Their catalogue of home movies is extensive, covering a broad range of subjects including Comedy, Animated Cartoons, Manners and Customs, Animal Actors, Scenic, Travel, Fairyland etc. Of particular interest is the section titled Glimpses of Australia that offers, amongst others, Spanning Sydney Harbour, which fully illustrates progress on the work of building the famous Bridge over Sydney Harbour, The Great Barrier Reef, The Timber Industry [of Western Australia], and Australian Aborignes Corroborees. The catalogue suggests that there were more than a few Australian households in the 1920s and 1930s who could support a home movie catalogue of such depth. [38] MITCHELL, Marjorie. Australia As I Found It... Being the Actual Experience of an English Girl, as Told by Herself. London, Society for the Oversea Settlement of British Women, Octavo, pp. 4; two conjugate leaves, folded as issued, about fine. $185 Uncommon and ephemeral piece: the account of her experiences living and working in Melbourne and country Victoria of a British young woman, promoting emigration to Australia for British women.

[39] STEVENS, Henry N. and George F. BARWICK. New Light on the Discovery of Australia as revealed by the Journal of Captain Don Diego de Prado y Tovar. London, Hakluyt Society, Octavo, pp. xvi, 262 (last colophon only), [2] (blank) + two folding maps bound in and two folding maps in an endpocket, with fullpage illustrations in the text; a fine, bright copy in original Hakluyt series cloth, gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut. $185 First publication of the original manuscript (in translation) of Captain Don Diego de Prado y Tovar s lost manuscript detailing the discovery of Torres Strait and Northmost Australia, was relocated by Henry Stevens and Robert Stiles among Spanish manuscripts bought at a Sotheby s sale. The journal clarifies the details of de Quirós s famous voyage of exploration in the South Seas in An uncommonly good copy. [40] [UNAIPON] SMITH, W. Ramsay. Myths and Legends of the Australian Aboriginals. London, George C. Harrap & Company, Octavo, pp with 16 coloured plates by Alice Woodward and 22 monochrome photographic plates, with numerous illustrations in the text; fore-edge and bottom edge uncut (the uncut edges a little spotted), an excellent copy, a trace of diffuse early foxing but about fine in original decorated buckram with the very scarce, slightly edge-creased but fine, price-clipped dustwrapper. $660 First edition: an exceptional copy, complete with dustwrapper, of this important survey of Aboriginal mythology, the first substantial account to be published. The central mythological text is now famously known to have been written by David Unaipon, who sold the copyright to Angus and Robertson, who then sold the copyright on to Smith. Smith evidently assumed that he could appropriate Unaipon s work and publish his retelling of the myths within the broader anthropological framework that he contributed to the volume. David Unaipon was a remarkable man, an outstanding scholar whose work to increase White Australian understanding of Aboriginal culture was of unique importance (Richards). Unaipon had himself published a few pamphlets in Adelaide in the 1920s recounting Aboriginal myths and it is certainly due to the success of those publications that Angus and Robertson took up his larger manuscript. Why Ramsay Smith ignored Unaipon s authorship is unknown and, while arguably typical of the times, it is not typical of what we know of the man otherwise. A most attractive copy, complete with dustwrapper

[41] [STOKES, Agnes?]. Memoirs of Martha: An Autobiography. Elicited and Edited By her Mistress. London, Arthur Barker Ltd, [July] Octavo, pp. xx, 332; edges spotted, some use but a good copy in spine-sunned original darkish blue cloth. $110 Memoirs of Martha gives a revealing picture of servant life in Victorian high society houses, with equally revealing observations on her masters and mistresses. Apparently based on the oral reminiscences of a real person, it is not unlikely that the account was considerably enhanced, if not embellished, for publication. This is the second impression of July 1933, following the first impression of June No edition in ANB; Walsh and Hooton, 2: [42] AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TRAVEL ASSOCIATION. Talking Points on Australia [wrapper title]. [Melbourne], Specialty Press [for Australian National Travel Association], n.d. circa mo, pp six leaves of plates (including a double-page map), text printed on blue paper; about fine in original titling-wrappers printed in red and black. $125 Rare: substantial but tiny booklet of outstanding fundamental facts concerning the Fifth Continent. Issued not for the benefit of Australian travellers themselves, nor for tourists, but to enable patriotic Australians to boost Australia when travelling overseas, so as to encourage immigration, tourism, investment, and so on. [43] KINGSFORD-SMITH, Sir Charles E. My Flying Life: An authentic biography prepared under the personal supervision of and from the diaries and papers of the late Sir Charles Kingsford- Smith. With a Preface by Geoffrey Rawson. London, Andrew Melrose Ltd., [1937]. Octavo, pp. 284, 32 (publisher s Announcements for Spring 1937), with three maps and one facsimile in the text + 16 leaves of plates; slight edge-spotting, two owner s names neatly on the front endpaper, very good in original dark blue buckram, the spine lettered and ruled in gilt. $165 First edition: Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith s posthumously-published autobiography, some portions of which had previously been published in the Melbourne Herald. ANB, 36561; McLaren Aviation, 46; McLaren Civil Aviation, 1108.

[44] BUCKLEY & NUNN Limited. Rare group of promotional ephemera. Melbourne, Buckley & Nunn Limited, pieces, various formats, mainly small octavo and small oblong octavo; folded or loose as issued, overall fine. $275 A rarely seen group of promotional ephemera, intended for distribution in the store or, too judge by dimensions, for postal distribution to established customers and account holders. All the pieces are directed to women and promote goods and services for women: for example, Ladies Hairdressing, Gloves, Shoes, hosiery, underwear, perfumery, cosmetics, lingerie, invitations to Fashion Previews for various seasons , Viennese Petit Point bags This last gives a clue to the source of these rare pieces: it is preent in two forms, a finished form on light buff paper, and a Rough Proof on white art paper. The rough proof is so marked and is from the printing firm of W.A. Hamer Pty Ltd, North Melbourne. One or two other pieces here have pencilled notes that also indicate them to be printer s or agency copies, a factor which explains how such ephemeral pieces might survive. [45] [McAULEY, James and Harold STEWART] MALLEY, Ern. The Darkening Ecliptic by Ern Malley. Melbourne, Reed & Harris, Small quarto, pp. 46, [2] + Sydney Nolan frontispiece; first leaf with a paper-clip crease (no rust staining), neat contemporary ownership inscription on the first leaf, very good in first issue blue-grey wrappers, printed white, sunned at extremities as often. $330 Extremely scarce: the first separate edition, first issue, (and the first publication of both authors) of this celebrated series of hoax poems. [46] FLATTELY, Stan (compiled by). The Australian Snow Pictorial. Melbourne, Georgian House, Large quarto, pp. 96, with duotone photographic illustrations throughout; the endpapers a little offset from the boards, near fine in original cloth with little edge-worn dustwrapper. $95 First edition and scarce: compiled for the Ski Club of Victoria by Stan Flattely, who was editor of the club s journal Schuss. The photographs were supplied mainly by members of the club, including E.G. Adamson, H.S. Gibbs, L.J. Clarke, and F. Smithies.

[47] CATO, Jack. The Story of the Camera in Australia. Melbourne, Georgian House, Quarto, pp. [ii] (recto blank, verso statement of limitation), xvi, 188 (last blank) + 39 leaves of plates; fine in original publisher s chocolate morocco, dark red topstain, with like dustwrapper. $385 Rare: the deluxe issue of the first edition, limited to 100 numbered and signed copies. This specially-bound, numbered and signed deluxe issue is rare beyond its limitation. The Georgian House catalogue for 1960 notes that A few copies available in full leather binding at 12/12/-. Prospectus available. [48] MARTYN, David Forbes. Society in the Space Age: Four Lectures Broadcast by the ABC in December Sydney, Waite & Bull [for Australian Broadcasting Commission], n.d. but Octavo, pp. 40; an excellent copy in original leather-grain wrappers, small pale mark at spine fold. $125 Scarce: this was the first of what would become the distinguished series of ABC Lectures, first broadcast in The concept of the Space Age was then highly topical, indeed one of the key public themes of the immediate post-war decades. Martyn was chairman of the Australian National Committee for Space Research and head of the upper atmosphere section at the CSIRO. His vision here, a blend of scientific and social actuality and speculation, included interplanetary travel, satellites for communication and weather forecasting, rocket freight to end shipping by sea and automobile, even population control and cures for cancer, migraine, and sore throats. [49] MALOUF, David, Don MAYNARD, Judith GREEN, and Rodney HALL. Four Poets. Melbourne, F.W. Cheshire, Tall duodecimo, pp. [88]; an excellent copy in original decorated yellow boards, as issued without dustwrapper. $770 First edition and now extremely scarce: with contemporary ownership signature of fellow poet Evan Jones on the free front endpaper. This was Malouf s first book publication, issued when he was in his late twenties. It was also the first publication of the three other contributors. Published with the high school market in mind with predictable consequences this volume has become one of the more elusive Malouf pieces.

[50] ANDERSON, Jessica. Tirra Lirra By the River. Melbourne and Sydney, Macmillan, Octavo, pp. [vi], 142 (last blank), [4] (blank); about fine in original plum boards with like unfaded Charles Blackman dustwrapper. $400 WITH LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR First edition of this modern classic: winner of the Franklin Award for 1978, this has become a very scarce book (only 1500 were printed). With a loosely inserted typed and signed letter, with envelope, from the author to novelist Walter Adamson concerning the reception of this book. [51] SLESSOR, Kenneth. The Sea Poems of Kenneth Slessor. Canberra, Officina Brindabella, Folio, pp. [ii], 42, [4] (first colophon, others blank); fine in original Helen Wadlington boards and black leather spine lettered in gilt with original plain mylar dustwrapper. $220 Edition limited to 240 copies, numbered and initialled by the publisher; with an introduction by Dennis Haskell and superb wood-engravings by Mike Hudson. Publisher Alec Bolton considered this his best book. Richards, 23. [52] [DUPAIN] WHITE, Jill (editor). Dupain s Sydney [with] Dupain s Beaches [with] Dupain s Australians. Sydney, Chapter & Verse, Three volumes, quarto, very numerous photographic illustrations throughout; fine in original boards with like dustwrappers. $275 First editions: series of volumes based on Dupain s archive of his work entrusted by him to his long-standing personal studio assistant Jill White in The second and third volumes are inscribed and signed by White.
