It may be called the first scientific book on Hawaii: although its main purpose was to report on mission progress, and Ellis was primarily interested in local manners and traditions, he was sufficiently expansive to include observations on such natural and cultural history topics as volcanoes, antiquities, and the anthropology of the islands. He includes an account of the death of Captain Cook from an eyewitness report of native Hawaiians. This edition is from the considerably enlarged second edition of 1827 ( first published 1826) and includes material also from Ellis s Journal of 1825: This combination constitutes the clearest, most accurate, and detailed account extant of the physical and social conditions existing in Hawaii in Hill. It has been fully collated in detail, and is quite complete and in good order, but for the following trifling faults to Series I & III: In Series I, Volume II has the margins to the Introduction trimmed rather close with the slight loss of the ends of lines on two pages; Volume VI has one 16-page section repeated with nothing omitted; Volume IX has 16 pages offset with slight loss of clarity, but still quite legible; Volume XIII has half-title & title-page slightly creased; Volume XIV has an original paper flaw to pp. 227/8 with loss of a few letters; in Series III, Volume II lacks pp. xvii-xxiv but these pages are supplied in good facsimile, as are copies of the few slightly defective pages to Series I mentioned above. These sets are probably rarely collated and few
