Nourse, 1772) has been out of print for many years. This was the first French circumnavigation and resulted in the French claim to several of the islands of the South Pacific, including Tahiti, the New Hebrides, and the Solomon Islands. Several geographical features in the Pacific are named after Bougainville, as well as the tropical flowering vine Bougainvillea. The primary object of the voyage was to hand over to Spain the Malouines or Falkland Islands (which Bougainville had earlier, in 1763, made an unsuccessful attempt to colonise). He then passed through the Straits of Magellan and crossed the Pacific, visiting the Tuamotu Archipelago, Tahiti (of which there is a long description, including observations of the natives and a vocabulary), the Samoas, the New Hebrides and the Solomon, Louisiade and New Britain Archipelagoes. The expedition was one of the earliest to be organized in a scientific fashion; it included a naturalist and astronomer, and carried a chronometer, first used systematically by the French on this voyage. #11066 A$450.00

Adelaide; Libraries Board of South Australia; ***Australiana Facsimile Editions No. 28 (only 511 copies produced). Originally published London, T. Egerton, see Ferguson 375. The Lady Nelson was was originally sent out to survey the Australian coast and was later ordered to accompany Matthew Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia, accompanying him when he set off, but her slow sailing meant she was unable to keep up and was forced to turn back when she ran aground off the Queensland coast. This voyage included the first navigation of Bass Strait from West to East. The account is however of more than just Australian historical interest. The Lady Nelson was an experimental vessel, and her performance was of considerable interest to nautical science. Grant was given command rather than the designer Captain Schanck, as it was thought that the experiment would be given a fairer trial. The sliding keels did not, however, make the impact expected in spite of the advantage they presented for surveying in shallow waters. #5138 A$420.00

London; J. Johnson; ***Ferguson 289; Hill 2, 974; Sabin One of four translations (one being an abridgement in one volume, 8vo only) published in London in 1798, here reprinted in Ferguson calls for an atlas of 44 plates, but it is doubtful that this was issued with this edition-- his entry for the first edition (1798) of this version (F. 270) makes no mention of an atlas -- probably it was only a binding variation with the plates in a separate atlas rather than bound up in the text volumes as directed by the publisher (one of the charts in Vol. III is in two sheets, which would account for the discrepancy in numbers). The voyage aroused intense interest but the ships were not heard of after leaving Botany Bay in 1788 and their fate was not positively determined until Peter Dillon discovered the wrecks at Vanikoro over 30 years later. #12603 A$

42 41 Lee, Ida. THE LOGBOOKS OF THE LADY NELSON, with the Journal of her First Commander Lieutenant James Grant, R.N. By Ida Lee, F.R.G.S. (Mrs. Charles Bruce Marriott)... With Sixteen Charts and Illustrations from the Originals in the Admiralty Library. First Edition; pp. [ii](blank), xiv, 328; 14 charts (2 folding & 1 doublepage), 3 plates, facsimile copy of H.M.S. Buffalo Ship s Muster, appendix, index; original cloth (spine a little dull, but a nice copy); scarce. London; Grafton & Co.; (1915). ***The Lady Nelson was was originally sent out to survey the Australian coast and was later ordered to accompany Matthew Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia, accompanying him when he set off, but her slow sailing meant she was unable to keep up and was forced to turn back when she ran aground off the Queensland coast. The voyage included the first navigation of Bass Strait from West to East. #4993 A$625.00

It is the foundation book for the colony of South Australia, containing proposals for the foundation of that colony along the lines propounded by Edward Gibbon Wakefield in The new colony is proposed for the area between 132 degrees and 141 degrees East on the south coast of Australia, together with the Islands on the coast and the work includes a brief historical account of Flinders explorations followed by a detailed survey of the configuration and productive capacity of the country taken from information provided by Flinders, Baudin and King, together with reasoned speculations on the possibility of exports of various commodities from the proposed settlement, with comparisons of the situation at Hobart Town, Sydney, the failed settlement at Swan River and various places even further afield such as Virginia. The eight-page appendix is important in its own right, comprising the report of a sealing expedition in the Brig Governor Macquarrie made in 1819: Report of a Voyage from Sydney to Kangaroo Island and of Observations made during a stay of seven months on, and near the island, by Captain Sutherland, who in the year 1819 was employed by some merchants of Sydney to command a vessel of 140 tons, expressly fitted out for the purpose of obtaining a cargo of salt and seal skins from Kangaroo Island. Captain Sutherland has been engaged for many years in the trade between England and New Holland, and lately commanded the ship Lang. He is now in London.
