It is a fantasy adventure about a young boy named Diamond who flies to another country on the back of the lady North Wind. The story is a tale about a family of poor, humanized mice whose father teaches each of his 8 sons how to play the magic flute made of maple and then sends them out into the world to spread happiness. There is a colorful border on each page of text and many, many strikingly colored, vibrant full page + in-text color illustrations that almost seem to be hand-done. A superb copy of one of the best picture books for children. Offered here is James Marshall s sketchbook with illustrations in color and pen and ink. It is a 40 page spiral bound Strathmore drawing pad measuring 18 1/4 wide and 24 high, lacking rear cover. The illustrations include pictures for Three Up A Tree (1986), Yummers Too: The Second Course (1986) and two unpublished picture books Lolly s Picture Book and The Hoovers. The pages are full of wonderful work in watercolor, colored pencil and pen & ink and are generously annotated with captions and ideas. They offer an interesting look into Marshall s creative process. All together there are 40 huge pages chock full of art and ideas. Susie Sunshine Series is listed as a new series on the rear cover. McLOUGHLIN PUB. THE STORY OF THE CHARMED FAWN. The title page reads NY: Elton & Co.. The front and rear covers read NY: John McLoughlin Publisher, no date, circa mo (5 1/8 x 6 ½ ), blue pictorial wraps, [24]p., nearly As New. Illustrated by Harrison Wier with 6 full page hand colored wood engravings, this was a title in the Pleasure Book series. John McLoughlin, Jr. had worked for R.H. Elton as a young man and he went on to work for his father, John Sr.. By then, John Sr. was in business with Elton. After a major fire, John Jr. set out on his own. When he did he also bought out the stock, wood blocks and other materials of the firm Robert Elton... Under the imprint of Elton & Company he [Elton] and McLoughlin began issuing toy books for children... (from a thesis on McLoughlin Brothers written by Julian Lapides). So this title is an example of the transitional books published before 1855 when John s brother came into the firm with name changing to McLoughlin Brothers. (illustrator) ORIGINAL ART: THE MAGIC CITY. Offered here is H.R. Millar s original drawing used in Edith Nesbit s fantasy The Magic City published in The image is much larger than the printed version, measuring 6 ½ wide x 9 1/4 high, signed and dated, matted and framed in fine condition. The caption is: On the top of a very large and wobbly camel. It depicts in amazing detail two children riding a camel through a crowded street. Millar, who studied at the Birmingham School of Art, was a popular Scottish artist working from the late 19th century though the first part of the twentieth century. He illustrated many of Edith Nesbit s books, numerous other fairy tales and fantasies as well as his own fantastic fantasy The Dreamland Express which he wrote as well as illustrated. The genesis of the art is explained in a series of 12 letters to Neill from the government s Treasury Department in which they encourage him as an artist to help promote the war effort by publicizing the need for donations to Liberty Loans. The first piece has an image size of 27 wide x 34 high (framed to larger, repair in lower corner). It is a strikingly graphic image of a large black bird representing Germany. The bird is clutching struggling defenseless people in both claws. But the bird is being killed by donations that patriotic Americans make for Liberty Loans that are depicted as arrows piercing the heart of the bird. The second poster s image measures 25 x 36 (framed to larger). It is a portrait of 2 men identified in one of the letters as Treasury Speaker with another man looming large behind him. Incidentally I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed reading the mss. and making the pictures. After illustrating about seventeen Oz books I think it worthwhile to let you know this with my congratulations on having secured an author of such superior qualifications to continue the work of supplying the Oz books. Every feature of the child appeal is handled with the greatest skill. The whimsical humor the interest and the zip of the book makes me think it one of the very best Oz books so far. Sincerely Jno R. She was a highly acclaimed muralist, a feminist, a socialist and a pacifist. It was her pacifism that prompted her to move to Geneva as an artistic ambassador to the League of Nations. The Law Triumphant was created to commemorate this visit and the Disarmament Conference held in Geneva. The book also celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Pennsylvania by William Penn (his Holy Experiment ) and the bi-centennial of George Washington s birth. The pages are loose, laid into sections with printed covers. The first part of the book contains the text, with typography done with the help of fellow Brandywine artist HARVEY DUNN. It is set in Garamond type and printed on high quality San Marco paper. The second part of the book contains the illustrations - 71 tipped in plates in color and black and white. The text describes the color illustrations used in The Law Triumphant and explains Oakley s philosophy on the importance of world peace - especially relevant today. Offered here is a large poster announcing a pageant held May 29-31, 1909 celebrating early Westchester County, New York settlers. The proceeds of the pageant were to go to Lawrence Hospital. The poster measures 20 wide by 30 high done on brown paper printed in black and red. Except for 2 margin mends and a fold mark it is in very good condition. The middle of the poster has an 11 x 9 picture of Joseph Bronck who, in 1639 became the first recorded white resident in Westchester. (The Bronx is named after him). The poster is also decorated with coats of arms and the lettering is undoubtedly by her as well. Oakley was a star student of Howard Pyle who distinguished herself not only with her art and her large murals but also with her active commitment to world peace and human rights. This is a charming watercolor SIGNED AND CAPTIONED IN INK BY POTTER and dated August It was executed on paper measuring 5 1/4 wide x 7 1/4 high and is in fine condition mounted and hinged on acid free board. The signature is lightly faded else fine. The image shows the surprised meeting of Peter and Mr. McGregor in the garden with Peter s back to the reader and Mr. McGregor s startled expression on his bearded face. The actual image measures 3 wide by 2 ½ high, and appears on page 38 of the first edition of the book. 1 inch below the image in Potter s hand is written Round the end of a cucumber frame / whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor! Beatrix Potter / Aug/ Judy Taylor explains in her book Beatrix Potter (p ) that Potter did a series of watercolors to raise money to raise a fund to save a strip of foreshore woodland and meadow, near Windermere Ferry, from imminent risk of disfigurement by extensive building and town extension. Taylor adds that Many of these pictures were sold in America...and within a year enough money had been raised. She quotes Potter: It was a great satisfaction to me to have been able to help the fund through the kindness of my friends in America... Whenever I cross the ferry and look at the pleasant green banks I will think of the good friends across a wider stretch of water. This is undoubtedly one of these watercolors done by Potter specially to be sold to help this fund, a few of which are in the V&A collection.
