1 Further Reading This book is not a general critical introduction to the works of Milton, so a selection of general critical books does not seem very appropriate. What is more, the Milton bibliography has become so huge that a reading list covering not just the well-known writings but something approaching the whole range, as this book does, is a plain impossibility in this space. Mentioned below, therefore, are some basic reference works, some recent bibliographies which the student may explore, and a brief selection of collections of essays of different critical character, from which the student may seek directions. (Abbreviations are as shown on p. vii) The only exhaustive edition of verse and prose is C. For study of the prose, with full apparatus, the student now generally refers to Y. For a fully, if sometimes a little eccentrically annotated edition of the verse, the usual source is CF. Lightly annotated volumes of the complete poetry in paperback form include The Complete Poetry of John Milton, Edited with an Introduction, Notes and Variants, by John T. Shawcross (revised edition, 1971). Paperback volumes containing the complete or nearly complete poetry and selected prose include Complete Poems and Major Prose, ed. M. Y. Hughes (1957), Complete English Poems, Of Education, Areopagitica, ed. G. Campbell (4th ed, revised, 1993), and John Milton, ed. S. Orgel and J. Goldberg (1990). The last mentioned has the fullest selection of prose, though its annotation is brief. Purchasable editions of much of the prose remain a problem, though the situation is helped by Martin Dzelzainis' edition of Tenure and a new translation of the First Defence in Political Writings (1991). The basic biographical tool is P (about to be reissued with corrections by Gordon Campbell), though many still like to refer to David Masson's magisterial Life of John Milton (7 vols, ). There are no satisfactory short lives currently in print. The Life of John Milton (1983), by the novelist A. N. Wilson is better on reapability than scrupulosity. The early lives have been collected in b. Still useful for their setting of the works of Milton into political context, despite their bias towards ideas of the 'radical underground', are the works of Christopher Hill: Milton and the English Revolution (1977) and The Experience of Defeat: Milton and Some Contemporaries (1984). 208
2 Further Reading 209 Since Milton's works engage many areas of intellectual debate, students may often find themselves needing information on names, contexts, and traditions of thought. A convenient reference tool for this purpose is The Milton Encyclopedia, general editor W. B. Hunter (7 vols, ). There are various exhaustive bibliographies of writing on Milton, but the most convenient resource for students will soon be the series of paperback bibliographies (general editor, Roy Flannagan) to be issued by Pegasus Paperbacks (MRTS). There are brief bibliographical guides in some of the editions mentioned above: that in Campbell is mainly traditional in outlook; that of Orgel and Goldberg determinedly radical and theoretical. A general introduction of collected essays in paperback form, covering many aspects of Milton's writing, is The Cambridge Companion to Milton, ed. D. Danielson (1989), which also carries a discursive bibliographical guide. A post-modem collection of recent writing on Milton is to be found in John Milton in the Longman Critical Readers series, ed. Annabel Patterson (1992), where there is also a brief bibliography organised by approach. The most recent collection of writing on the prose is Politics, Poetics, and Hermeneutics in Milton's Prose, ed. D. Loewenstein and J. G. Turner (1990).
