6 1. Itinerarium Beatae Virginis Mariae. Lienhart Ysenhut, [Basel], [about 1489]. A richly illustrated devotional work of great rarity: no example could be traced at auction in the last 35 years and only 10 complete copies are kept in public institutions, including 7 in Germany and Switzerland, and only 2 in the USA (Pierpont Morgan and Library of Congress). The Itinerarium Beatae Virginis Mariae [...] has the life of Mary as its starting and ending point but as its centre has the life of Christ. It consciously adapts the central portion of a Book of Hours, the Hours of the Virgin, in its seven-part division corresponding to the seven joys and sorrows of Mary and the seven canonical hours commemorating them, but it leaves Mary aside with the birth of Christ. It is His life which occupies the third through sixth parts. The Itinerarium is didactic not only in teaching the story of both Mary and Jesus, but also in leading the reader to purer, more spiritual life. [...] Just as the components of prayer and Biblical history work together to edify the soul, so too do the illustrations which are integral to the text. The Itinerarium involves both passive and active participation of the reader to impress itself on the heart and soul. (M. Ford, BPH Catalogue). This is one of the few books printed by Ysenhut, a wood-cutter; interestingly, all his books are illustrated. This is the second edition in Latin, the original language of the Itinerarium, after the first published in Ulm in Provenance: J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #123, acquired from Tenschert, 1989). 8vo. (14.3 x 9.9 cm). 108 ll., with overhead caption on b8r upside-down as Murray EGB 224, 54 woodcuts and Maiblumen capitals; occasional notes in contemporary and later hands, the most important on the blank space of the last leaves. Modern blue morocco janseniste by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt border to turn-ins. 7 FROM ONE CHRONICLER TO ANOTHER: A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY 2. BERGAMO, Jacobus Philippus; Albertus de Placentia; Augustinus de Casali Maiori (editors). De claris mulieribus. Laurentius de Rebeis, de Valentia, Ferrara, 29 April The beautiful Schedel-Fugger-Landau hand-coloured copy of the first edition of the first encyclopedia of women, one of the finest early Italian illustrated books and the first to attempt life-like portraits. The final seven portraits were actually contemporaries of the author. Unlike other woodcuts in the book, these were not repeated. An Augustinian monk, Giacomo Filippo Foresti da Bergamo ( ) draws here from Boccaccio s own De claris mulieribus, but develops a different approach - instead of choosing lesser known female figures to rediscover them for posterity, he instead makes a catalogue of important women in the history of humanity, including for example the Joan of Arc, Pope Joan, Margaret Queen of England and Margaret Queen of Scotland - as well as mystics such as Birgitta and Catherine of Siena. The fine woodcuts appear here for the first time. They range from full architectural borders to the numerous portrait cuts of women. Although unidentified, two artists may be detected in the woodcuts, working in contrasting Florentine and Venetian styles. One woodcut border is signed S and dated This detail, coupled with the fact that Beatrice of Aragon, the book s dedicatee, died in 1491, suggests that the work was planned for earlier publication but then delayed. With a superb contemporary provenance. Bergamo s other work, the Supplementum chronicarum, was first printed in Venice in just 10 years before the publication of one of the most famous and best selling books of the fifteenth century, the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel ( ). The present copy [...] is from the 15th century library of Schedel (R. Stauber, Die Schedelsche Bibliothek, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1908). [It was rubricated and foliated by him and sold by his grandson.] It was formerly the first in a volume containing two other works, the Polybius, Historiarum libri quinque (Venice, 1498), now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and Lupoldus Bambergensis Germanorum veterum principum zelus (Basel, 1497) (M.Ford, BPH catalogue). Provenance: Hartmann Schedel (Moor s head arms at base of each woodcut border, sold by his grandson, Melchior Schedel in 1552 to); Johann Jakob Fugger; Royal Library, Munich (19th-c. withdrawal stamp); Baron Horace de Landau (bookplate with monogram HL, sale Kundig, 25 June 1948, lot 19); Charles van der Elst (bookplate); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #126, acquired from Kraus, 1987). Folio (31.2 x 20.7 cm). 176 leaves, 45 lines and headline, printed marginalia, xylographic title-page, 2 full-page woodcuts within woodcut border, a second border framing first text page, 172 woodcut portraits from 56 blocks, one historiated woodcut capital M, ornamental capitals, printer s device, full-page illustrations, borders and first two portraits hand-coloured, woodcut capitals and lombards coloured alternately in red and blue, paragraph-marks in red or blue, capital-strokes and ms foliation ( apparently once including two blank preliminary leaves) supplied in red; some foxing to extreme edges. Nineteenth-century brown crushed morocco janseniste by Duru et Chambolle, 1862, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, all edges marbled and gilt, marbled endpapers; lightly rubbed. 9 3. BERTHOLDUS. Horologium devotionis circa vitam Christi. [bound with] Thomas a KEMPIS. De vita et beneficiis salvatoris Jesu Christi devotissime meditationes cum gratiaru[m] actione. [And with] GERARDUS ZERBOLD DE ZUTPHANIA. Tractatus de spiritualibus ascensionibus [with] David de AUGUSTA. De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione Lib. II, 1 (de quatuor in quibus incipientes deo servire debent esse cauti). Johann Amerbach and Johann Petri de Langendtorff, Basel, [not after ]. Lovely hand-coloured Sammelband in an attractive contemporary binding. Amerbach s production is noteworthy for its woodcuts. From the 36 printed in Bertholdus second Basel edition, seven are after the Master of the Haintz Narr, and 23 are clearly inspired from the Cologne tradition, as found in Zell s 1488 edition. They are nicely intertwined with the text, printed in different type sizes, and show, next to the Passion, the traditional key events of the life of Christ. Bertholdus was a Dominican of the mid-14th century, who first wrote his Zeitglöcklein des Lebens und Leidens Christi in his native language, German. They were however never published in the original German, but the Latin version (by the author himself) was first published in about 1488 at Cologne and enjoyed considerable popularity up to about 1510, mostly in Germany (see GW 4166 sqq.). As in the present case, it often found bound together with the two other works. They were popular devotional texts from the Devotio Moderna movement, a remarkable religious phenomenon of the late 14th century. Thomas a Kempis is probably the most famous name associated with it, as he wrote biographies of prominent members: Gerard Groote the founder, Florens Randewijns, John van de Gronde and John Brinckerinck. Provenance: Ludovicus Anetenwyl, 1569 (date purchase inscription on first title; monasterii s[ancti] urbani ); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, # , acquired 1990). Four works published in three (the last edition consisting of two works) in one volume octavo (13.9 x 10 cm). I. 65 leaves (of 66, without final blank), 30 lines, 36 near half-page woodcuts hand-coloured, 3- and 5-line initials in red or blue; II. 72 leaves, 30 lines, 3-line initials in red, II. 68 leaves, 30 lines, 3-line initials in red, all three works rubricated with printed guide-letters, paragraph-marks and initial-strokes in red, margins ruled; occasional marginal soiling, I. with marginal notes washed on leaves a3-4, II. with tear in lower margin of last leaf mended without affecting text, old ms note on final blank and on front pastedown in same hand, III. with outer third of title page and lower half of last leaf renewed without loss of text. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, spine in compartments, panel design with crossed diagonal rules and small floral stamps in central panel, brass bosses and corner-pieces, clasps and catches; a bit rubbed, lacking 3 of 8 corner-pieces, a few small tears and repairs on spine, housed in a green cloth drop-box. 10 4. BIRGITTA OF SWEDEN [BRIDGIT, Saint]. Revelationes. Bartholomaeus Ghotan [for Wadstena Monastery, Lübeck, before 25 Nov] The earliest extant Latin edition of the revelationes - the fine Broxbourne copy with contemporary provenance. Only two earlier editions are mentioned by GW, but these are only known from printer s waste, and neither of which were completed. The present edition is known to have been printed for the monastery at Vadstena, the motherhouse of the Bridgettine order, from the Diarium Vazstenese, where it is stated that a priest, Petrus Ingemari, and a lay brother, Gerhardus, went to Lübeck in 1491 to see the edition through the press. 16 copies of the Revelationes were printed on vellum as well as 800 paper copies. Printing was completed the following year, probably in the autumn, as the two returned to Vadstena on 24 November Gerhardus is described in the Diarium for 1487 as a German qui novit sculpere & depingere ( who knows how to engrave and draw ), and it is probable that he executed the superb woodcuts in this volume. Especially remarkable are the full-page illustrations composed of several smaller woodcuts combined with explanatory type-printed text. This system allows repeating the depictions of Christ and the Virgin Mary in heaven and of St Bridget receiving her vision, while the subjects of the revelations change. This illustration was of considerable influence, as a copy of the present edition served as a prototype to Anton Koberger for his reprint of the Revelationes in As far as their religious as well as artistic impact is concerned, the Revelations the literary bequest of St Bridget ( , canonized in 1391, founder of the Order of St Saviour or Bridgettine Order) - are the most important example of Scandinavian literature of the Middle Ages. Written and dictated in Swedish by Bridget herself, they were translated into Latin by her spiritual advisors. The most important portion of the text comprises revelations, in the narrow sense of the word, that are rich in ideas and that show an affinity to German mysticism. One theme pervades the entire text: powerful warnings are addressed to princes and to the popes concerning the decadence of the church. Included in the text are the Prologues of Magister Mathias of Sweden and Johannes de Turrecremata, the papal bull of Bridget s canonisation, and her vita complement the edition. Provenance: Johannes and Cunigunde Schwan (dated inscription on dd10v in. nomine Ihesu Christi filii Virginis Marie amen. Ego iohannes Schwan: coniux mea Cunigundis fecimus [?] per mea petitionem in Altomunster anno etc. 93 die proxima post assumptionis Marie [16 August 1493], the date 1493 occurs again in manuscript at the end of the Tabula ); Altomunster abbey (contemporary ownership inscription at end, partly shaved; note dated Altomunster 1651; binding stamped with abbey s initials A.M ); Broxbourne copy (Sotheby s, sale 15 Nov. 1977, lot 321); J.R. 12 AN EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE 5. COLUMNA, Franciscus [but Eliseo da TREVISO] and Benedetto BORDONE (artist; attributed to). Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Aldus Manutius, Romanus, Venice, December The Oronce Finé-Enschedé-Fiske Harris copy of the most admired of Renaissance illustrated books, a celebrated masterpiece of Italian art and typography, bringing together the Aldine mastery of type, illustration, design and execution (M. Ford, BPH catalogue). It is of utmost rarity to find a work which belonged to Oronce Finé, one the greatest minds of the early sixteenth century. Son and grandson of physicians, Finé ( ) was a significant and prolific mathematician and cartographer. His most important contributions to human knowledge were a close approximation of pi as well as a ground-breaking map of the world, represented for the first time in the shape of a heart. This cordiform map became very famous thanks to the frequent use by other cartographers such as Apian and Mercator. The Hypnerotomachia takes the author and the reader in a fantastic poetical, artistic, magic and even alchemical journey through a dream-world of pyramids and obelisks, classical gardens, ruined temples and bacchanalian festivals, before gaining ultimate enlightenment at the temple of Venus. The unique title summarises the intricacy of the text: it is a specific construction, based on Greek words blending dream, passion, struggle, antiquity, love, Polia (the author s love) and multiplicity. Interpretations among scholars have been many, up to Carl Jung s description of the black tulip in the midst of [Alde s] classical texts ; a recent investigation into explicative near-contemporary annotations written into a copy at Modena shows that it served as a sort of humanist encyclopedia. Recent scholarship ascribes the Hypnerotomachia to Eliseo da Treviso rather than Columna/Colonna, whose name appears in the acrostic formed by the woodcut initials. Provenance: Oronce Finé (inscriptions on first and fifth leaves; 18th-c. inscription about Finé in Dutch, maybe by); Johannes Enschedé (probably Johannes I or II, 18th-c. Dutch typographers and three generations of book collectors, sale Muller & Nijhoff in 1867, to); Caleb Fiske Harris ( , important American collector, armorial bookplate with motto Kur deu res pur tra ); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #72, acquired from Quaritch, 1984). Folio (30.3 x 20.2 cm). 233 leaves (of 234, without final F4 with errata and colophon), Greek and Hebrew catchwords, 172 woodcuts, including 11 full-page woodcuts, several hand-coloured in red, blue and yellowwash, woodcut initials forming acrostic giving author s name; light occasional spotting, mainly marginal, a bit stronger at beginning and end, first leaf with erased inscription and repaired abrasions in places. Eighteenth-century French polished calf, triple fillet border to covers, spine with raised bands gilt in compartments, brown morocco label lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; paper shelf label on spine partly gone, joints and spine extremities repaired, a bit rubbed and stained overall. 14 6. DE CLUSA, Jacobus. Tractatus de apparitionibus et receptaculis animarum exutarum corporibus. [With] TUNDALUS. De raptu animae et eius visione. [With] Johannes GOBIUS. De spiritu Guidonis. [With] Guillermus HOUPPELANDE. De immortalitate animae. [And with] Antonius LIBER. Epigramma in laudem urbis Coloniae. Hermann Bumgart, Cologne, 8 May Very attractive hand-coloured example of this rare edition of four works on ghosts, visions of the after-life in Ireland and immortality of the soul. ISTC lists 13 complete copies outside Germany, only three in North America (Houston, Yale and Lib. of Congress) and two in the UK (BL and Rylands). No copy can be traced at auction in the past 35 years. Each of the four works is preceded by a lovely woodcut, one of which shows Tundalus der Sitter in full armour. They were copied from the series used by Johann and Conrad Hist, printers in Speyer, to illustrate their editions of the Visio Tundali from 1483 onwards. The Visio Tundali is a twelfth century text reporting the otherworldly visions of the Irish knight Tnugdalus during the journey of the soul through Heaven and Hell. Brother Marcus, an itinerant monk, wrote this fantastic tale circa 1150 in the Scots Monastery in Regensburg; being Irish, he set the story in Cork, Ireland. The work became a very popular piece of visionary literature, and more than 170 manuscript copies are now known. Jacobus de Clusa ( , also known as J. de Jüterbog) was a Carthusian from Erfurt and a zealous Church reformer. He wrote about 80 treatises, mostly on theological and canonical subjects, and the present one deals with the condition of the human soul after death. It is accompanied by the dialogue-vision of Guido, attributed to the early fourteenth century French Dominican Johannes Gobius (the source of the Middle English poem The Ghost of Guy ), and the Treatise on the Immortality of the Soul by Guillaume Houpppelande (d. 1492), a theology master at the University of Paris and canon of Notre-Dame. The last page contains distichs in praise of the city of Cologne, asserting its superiority over Rome, Athens, Venice and Paris. Provenance : J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #271, possibly from Quaritch, pencil note, 2001). Five works in one volume 4to (19.6 x 13.6 cm.). 40 leaves (final blank), 46 lines, rubricated, 4 woodcuts with contemporary hand-colour, 5- and 6-line initials in blue with red flourishing, 2- and 3-line initials in blue and red; lightly annotated in an early hand, a few leaves at beginning and end reattached in gutter. 15 7. Epistolae et evangelia (Plenarium). Hie vahet sich an ein plenari. Anton Sorg, Augsburg, 7 May The Dyson Perrins-Doheny-BPH copy of this lovely edition, presenting for the first time its 41 woodblocks, here all fully hand-coloured. Of great rarity: we couldn t trace any other example at auction in the last 35 years, and only seven complete copies in public institutions, including just one in the UK (BL) and one in the Americas (Library of Congress). A lay devotional text, the Plenarium consists of translations of the epistle and Gospel readings for the mass throughout the year. This is Anton Sorg s first edition, and the fifth edition overall - all published in the same town. The woodcuts are original to Sorg and include a fine full-page crucifixion with symbols of the evangelists, the sun and moon; they were used again by Sorg in later editions. Provenance: C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate, sale Sotheby s 10 March 1947, lot 578, 110 to Maggs for); Estelle Doheny (red morroco booklabel, sale Christie s NY, 22 October 1987, lot 45, to H.P. Kraus for); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #160). Small folio (26 x 19.4 cm), 325 leaves (of 326, without the first blank leaf), 34 lines and headline, 49 woodcuts (with 8 repeats) incl. one full-page, 9-line woodcut initials on leafy grounds, all with contemporary hand-colour; occasional spotting, small rust hole through final leaves, leaves 8 and 1 [second series] extended at foremargin and clean tears mended. 16 8. FIRMICUS MATERNUS, Julius; Franciscus Niger (editor). Mathesis (De nativitatibus). Marcus MANILIUS. Astronomicon. ARATUS. Phaenomena [in Greek and Latin]. THEON. Commentaria in Aratum [in Greek]. PROCLUS. Diadochus. Sphaera [in Greek and Latin]. Aldus Manutius, Venice, June and [17] October A hand-coloured example, with a beautifully illuminated initial and lovely historiated decorations, of this important Aldine collection of classical astronomic texts, presenting the first edition in Greek of Aratus Phaenomena and Proclus Sphaera. The major extant work of the Greek poet Aratus (ca BC), the Phaenomena was popular in Antiquity and much translated. In his typical scholarly approach, Aldus publishes here, next to his own introduction, three major Latin versions ( Germanicus Caesar, Cicero and Rufius Festus Avienus) - before the Greek text which itself is surrounded with Greek commentary. He also decided to enhance Germanicus text with beautiful woodcuts, inspired by the influential 1482 edition of Hyginus published by Ratdolt. Firmicus Maternus De nativitatibus, also entitled Mathesis, ranks as the most comprehensive textbook of astrology of ancient times (Stillwell, Awakening, I:56). It represents popular traditions and sets out practical astrological method, citing Hermes, Orpheus, Abraham and Aesculapius as sources. It also comprises a defence of astrology, the effects of the planets, the moon, the signs, and horoscopes. Book VII is marked by undue attention to sexual and moral deviates (DSB IV, 622).] Following Bevilaqua s 1497 edition, this is the second edition of the text; since however Niger s dedication to Hyppolyto d Este is also dated 1497, it seems that work was clearly well underway when Bevilaqua s edition appeared on the market. The present copy is annotated throughout by Marquardus Husen, councillor of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, showing him to be an intelligent reader engaging deeply with the text. Provenance: Husen and Hall de Suntheim families (contemporary inscription and arms on title); Christopher von Husen, canon at the cathedral church at Speier (inscription on pi6v recording his gift to Joannes Marquardus Husen juris consultus and councillor to Emperor Charles V, annotations throughout, including one noting an event on 24 April 1547); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #273, acquired from Christie s, 29 Nov. 2000, lot 49, possibly through Quaritch, pencil note). Six works in one volume folio (31 x 21.1 cm). 376 leaves, 38 lines and headline, 2- to 10-line initial spaces with guide-letters, Greek texts with 40 and 42 lines, opening text page (a1) illuminated with 10-line foliate initial in pink and ochre with burnished gold infill with damascene effect of scrolling fronds in yellow wash, polychrome foliate extensions, lower margin with a bird and arms in silver, orange and blue, woodcut diagrams, 39 astrological woodcuts, all with contemporary hand-colour, 6- to 8-line book initials in red or blue, often interlocking, with purple penwork decoration, occasionally historiated with a face or animal, 6- to 8-line polychrome initials with foliate decoration and historiated penwork extensions, 3- to 4-line initials in red or blue, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, blue paragraph marks in headline; very occasional light spotting, small stain on title, a1 lower margin reinforced on verso and preserved by folding in, neat repaired tear in B3 and H7, sheet F2.5 browned. Early 20th-century vellum, spine lettered and with painted astrological design, green edges; damage to hinge, lower edge of rear cover bumped. 17 9. RETZA, Franciscus de. De generatione Christi, sive Defensorium inviolatae virginatatis Mariae. [Johann and Konrad Hist, Speyer, about 1484]. Fine, fully hand-coloured example of this lovely production - a rare work, as we could trace only one example of any incunable edition at auction in the last 40 years. The last copy at auction of the present, second edition was apparently offered in 1966 and sold for $3,080. The Defensorium follows the late medieval tradition of didactic, typological books and presents a series of pictures accompanied by a two-line verse in Latin with a fourline German translation. [It] draws its lessons from natural history, world history and mythology. Rather than developing a story-book version of Scripture, it aims to provide a full range of symbols which prove the virginity of Mary. As with the other books of its genre, the integration of text and picture is central to its didacticism; the eye beholds the image while the soul takes in the words, impressing the whole more firmly on the mind and leading to devotion. Thus, a picture with a unicorn in the lap of a virgin is accompanied by the text telling that the unicorn, eluding all hunters, comes willingly to sleep in the lap of the virgin. On the Christological level, this represents Christ, the World Incarnate, coming willingly to humanity. Only one illustration is specifically scriptural, and it shows the annunciation and birth of Christ. Here that woodcut appears as the first scene, in other versions it appears as the central image (M. Ford, BPH Catalogue). Provenance: Frater Ioannes Georgius Molitor Carmelita Sigmaringensis (in Schwabia, inscription on first leaf, and in another hand requiescit in pace ) ; ct+ (small stamp on 1/2r; Lugt 642d); J.R. Ritman (BPH bookplate, #87, acquired from Tenschert, 1988). Quarto (18.5 x 12.6 cm). 30 ll with 53 woodcuts incl. 2 full-page, handcoloured primarily in red and brown,1- to 5-line initials, paragraph marks and capital-strokes in red, apparently extracted from a Sammelband, the ms. foliation numbered ; occasional light spotting. 18 10. ROLEWINCK, Werner. Dat boek dat men hiet fasciculus temporum. Johann Veldener, Utrecht, 14 February The first Dutch edition of the first printed chronological history of the world, the most widely used historical reference work of the incunable period: the Broxbourne copy, with all woodcuts, borders, initials, coats-of-arms and roundels fully hand-coloured. The greatest work of a prolific Carthusian monk, the Fasciculus temporum is an attempt to resolve the thorny problem of reconciling the history of the world (anno mundi, dating from the creation in 5199 BC) with anno domini dating (from the birth of Christ). It does so through a highly innovative page design. The flow of the document is shifted 90 degrees to take the reader horizontally across each page, not down it, and the two different chronologies are represented above and below the central line. The focus on dating is evident, with each roundel enclosing the name of a historical or biblical figure, alongside a statement of the length of his life or reign in years, months and days, with the dates since the beginning of the world and the birth of Christ at the top and bottom of the roundel. Floods and wonders such as earthquakes, rains of blood, the falling of huge stones from the sky, unusual flights of birds, and comets feature greatly in its content, as do events pertinent to Rolewinck s city, Cologne (including a story of a bolt of lightning in the form of a dragon which struck the church of St. Peter in Cologne in 840, killing three and leaving six half alive). Rolewinck was a bookish man, and his interest in libraries is evident: he comments on the destruction of the library of 400,000 books in Egypt in the time of Julius Caesar, stating from this it is clear what great diligence ancient times showed in collecting books. Let those blush for shame who do not acquire a good supply of books when it can be done, of course, by small cost. This is the second edition of the work printed by Veldener, whose Latin edition appeared in 1475 in Louvain and supplied eight of the woodblocks used here. Supplementing these are twelve new woodcuts, several of which are strongly dependent on cuts in the Rudimentum Novitiorum (Lübeck, 1475), plus the coats-of-arms and printer s device, all of which are the work of the Utrecht woodcutter (Conway p.209). Veldener designed the type employed here ( West Flanders style) for printing his books in the vernacular, which he did exclusively while in Utrecht and Culemborg (M. Ford, BPH Catalogue). 19 11. ADAM, Robert. The works in architecture of Robert and James Adam. For the authors, London, 1778 (but ), A fine, fresh copy, with Russian imperial provenance, of the first issue of the first edition of the designs of the Adam brothers. The first volume appeared in parts between 1773 and 1778 and the second volume followed in Between them they illustrate many of Robert Adam s major domestic commissions - Kenwood, Sion, Luton Hoo, and the London houses of Lord Shelburne and Sir W. W. Wynn - and they were the main means by which knowledge of the Adam style in architecture and interior design spread in Britain and Europe. The splendid plates, engraved by Pastorini, Bartolozzi, Piranesi, Cunego, etc., illustrate interiors, furnishings and decorative details as well as the architecture of the buildings concerned. The aim... was to establish the primacy of the Adams in creating and establishing a new style of architecture and in publicizing their abilities - and availability - in this respect. But the book was by no means a survey of their built work. Robert aimed to indicate the quality of their connections - the empress of Russia; Queen Charlotte; the princess dowager of Wales; the dukes of Montagu and Northumberland; the earls of Bute, Derby, Mansfield and Shelburne; and Sir Watkins William Wynn - and to present a tantalizing glimpse of the realms that he had created for such notabilities. (Millard p. 13). Provenance: Maximilian de Beauharnais, third Duke of Leuchtenberg ( , sonin-law of Tsar Nicholas I, engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown); La Tour d Auvergne Lauragais. 20 12. ALEXANDER, William. The costume of China, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings. William Miller, London China in the eighteenth century was largely a closed world to Europeans, known only through the artefacts that had filtered west and guessed at only from the rare accounts of the travellers who had penetrated into the mainland. William Alexander, an artist from Maidstone, Kent, was the draughtsman officially attached to the 1792 embassy of Lord Macartney to the Emperor of China, and the record he has left provides an essential document for understanding pre-modern China. 32 The greatest and finest atlas ever published 31. BLAEU, Joannes. Grooten Atlas, oft werelt beschryving, in welcke t aerdryck, de zee, en hemel, wort vertoont en beschreven. Blaeu, Amsterdam, A beautiful example, in an unusual deluxe binding and vibrant hand-colouring, of the greatest and finest atlas ever published (Koeman). With 600 hand-coloured engraved maps in 9 volumes covering the entire known world, the Atlas Maior was also the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century. With its high typographic standard, lavish presentation in vivid colours, and often luxurious bindings, Blaeu s Atlas remained the standard world atlas and premier product of the Dutch publishing industry, the most prestigious in the world, for over a hundred years and frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic. The atlas is justly famed for its carte-aux-figures maps of the continents, the 58 maps devoted to England and Wales, the first printed atlas of Scotland, the suite of 25 maps of America, including important early maps of Virginia, New England and Brazil, and Martini s Atlas of China, the first European atlas of China. The scale and success of Blaeu s atlas is due in no small part to the impetus provided by the fierce competition between the Blaeu and Janssonius publishing houses. Until the late 1620s, the European market for world atlases was dominated by the Mercator maps published by Jodocus Hondius II and, later, by Johannes Jannsonius. However, following Hondius death in 1629, and the growing competition in publishing sea charts and pilot books, the Blaeu business seized its opportunity to publish a grand world atlas: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum or Atlas novus. The project did not get off to a swift start and, at the time of the death of Willem Janszoon Blaeu ( ), only two volumes had been published. However, his eldest son, Dr Joan Blaeu had joined the business in the 1630s and continued the task, publishing a volume for Italy in 1640, one for England in 1645, and another for Scotland in In doing so Joan Blaeu eclipsed his chief rival, Johannes Janssonius, who, from this time, never matched the quantity of volumes and maps in Blaeu s magnificent atlas (Fleet). The present Dutch edition comprises is very much influenced in its structure by the Toonnel des Aerdryck. Unlike the Latin edition, the volumes have different dates, as follows: Volume I: World, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe (1664). 90 maps and plates, including 5 plans and 9 plates illustrating Tycho Brahe s astronomical observatory on the island of Ven in Oresund (after the woodcuts in Brahe s Astronomiae instauratae mechanicae, published at Wandsbeck in 1598), where Johannes Blaeu s father, Willem, was assistant and student for a time. The maps of Slesvig are part of the series originally published in Caspar Danckwerth and Johannes Mejer s Newe Landesbeschreibung der zweij Herzogthumer Schleswig und Holstein ([Hamburg?] 1652). Volume II: Germany, Switzerland and South-East Europe (1664). 107 maps, including the balance of the Danckwerth and Mejer maps of Volume III: The Netherlands and the United Netherlands (1664). 65 maps. Volume IV: England and Wales (1662). 58 maps. Volume V: Scotland and Ireland (1662). 55 maps: Koeman s table (pp ) calls for only 54. His numbering omits map [386] t Eylandt Glotta, of Arran, which should come between the maps of Kintyre and of Bute. Most of the maps are based on the manuscript surveys of Timothy Pont and Robert Gordon, and which were printed for the first time in Of all the component parts of the Blaeu atlas, the Scotland and 62 Shapero Rare Books Shapero Rare Books 63

33 Ireland volume is the best documented, and there is a considerable body of surviving manuscript drafts and documentary material relating to its history (see: J.C. Stone, The Pont Manuscript Maps of Scotland, 1989). Volume VI: France (no date). 66 maps. Volume VII: Italy and Greece (no date). 67 maps. Volume VIII: Spain, Africa and the Americas (1665). 64 maps, largely based on the works of Johannes de Laet, as well as the fine group of Brazilian maps showing the (by then) former Dutch colonies. These are after the series originally published by Blaeu in 1647 in Caspar Barlaeus Rerum per octennium in Brasilia and show the remarkable vignettes after the designs of the painter Frans Janszoon Post (c ), which in this copy are coloured to a fine effect. Volume IX: Asia, China and Japan (1664). 28 maps. Essentially two atlases in one, these maps include the set of 17 of China and Japan after Martino Martini, SJ, which first appeared in the Novus atlas sinensis which Blaeu had issued in These maps in particular were highly praised by the great French cartographer Nicolas Sanson, who wrote that Martini knew better than the others the proportion between the Latitudes and Longitudes, or because his maps had been engraved and printed in Holland where there are persons who have handled too many Maps not to know this proportion.... The delicate chinoiserie designs of the cartouches of these maps are coloured to a high degree. Provenance: European private collection. Thirteen parts in 9 volumes folio (57.3 x 38 cm). Printed general title, engraved allegorical title, 9 printed or engraved titles within engraved borders, 7 printed divisional titles, and 600 engraved maps, plans, views and plates, mostly double-page, all with contemporary hand-colour, the title and many maps heightened with gold; occasional browning, light occasional spotting. The Vollard edition did not appear until 10 years later. The collaboration between the publisher and art dealer, Vollard, and Bonnard was of the greatest significance in the development of modern art and particularly the Livre de peinture. their first collaboration was an edition of Verlaine s Parallèlement (1900), which is generally taken as the starting point of these magnificent artist s books. 37 34. BROOKE, E. Adveno. The Gardens of England. T. McLean, London, [1857]. A rare, large format work providing superb depictions of English country house gardens in Victorian times, and giving an insight into the taste of the great estate owners. The magnificent gardens depicted include those at Trentham Park (laid out by Capability Brown with additions by Charles Barry in the 1840 s), Enville Hall (gardens extended in the mid-nineteenth century and celebrated for its fountains, its floral display, and its domed and turreted oriental palace of a conservatory), Bowood House (originally laid out by Brown but with later Italianate terraces added), Alton Towers ( The work of a morbid imagination joined to the command of unlimited resources (J. C. Loudon), Elvaston Castle (famous for its splendid arboretum), Shrublands Hall (Italianate terraces by Barry), Woburn Abbey (a Repton masterpiece), Holkham House (William Kent- Capability Brown, with extensive 1850 s additions including a parterrre with the Earl of Leicester s initials in box, and a pair of flower beds in a Louis XIV pattern accompanying a fountain representing St. George and the dragon), Castle Howard ( whose modern additions included a new parterre using yew hedges to frame the lawns and the Triton Fountain taken from the Great Exhibition), and many others. 40 38. CADDY, John Herbert. Views of Niagara Falls. [Second half of the 19th century]. A beautiful pair of views by a renowned Canadian landscape artist who documented in watercolour the Hamilton - Niagara Falls area John Herbert Caddy was born in Quebec in 1801 into a family of military engineers. His grandfather had been sent to Newfoundland in the 18th century to build a fort. Caddy was sent to England for his education before returning to Canada. Caddy was a painstaking artist who worked slowly and carefully from pencil sketches made on the scene, through sepia drafts, to the finished picture. Apparently he sometimes completed several versions of the finished landscape but rarely, if ever, signed his work. He exhibited water-colours and oils in the annual provincial exhibitions from 1858 to 1868, winning awards for his meticulous landscapes, marines, and animal and flower studies. Pair of watercolours, each 30.5 x 42cm (12 x 16 1/2in). Framed and glazed. ref: , Shapero Rare Books Shapero Rare Books 79

41 39. CHAMBERS, William. Plans, elevations, sections and perspective views of the gardens and buildings at Kew in Surrey, the seat of Her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales. Haberkorn for the author, London, First edition of this superb record of the early architectural high points of the Royal Horticultural Society s most famous garden. The short text provided by way of introduction to the plates describes the intended route through the garden, beginning at the palace, proceeding to the Greenhouse or Orangery, the Temple of the Sun, on to the enclosed Physic or Exotic Garden, then to the Flower Garden and Aviary, and the Menagerie or Pheasant Garden with its Chinese Pavilion and so on. The forty-three plates were arranged roughly in this sequence... Though Chambers offers no hint of the significance intended by the extraordinary array of pavilions and features, it is clear that he was leading his visitors through an image of the world, both past and present... Several themes are invoked, Frederick s [The Prince of Wales] exotic interests; the advance in husbandry, botany, and engineering in contemporary Britain; and most significantly, its new imperial role. The building of Kew coincides precisely with the waging of the Seven Years War, the first truly global conflict. Britain s empire is commemorated again and again. Thus the ruined arch on one side of the great lawn is countered on the other by the Gothic cathedral - the Roman Empire, the Holy Roman Empire even, overtaken by an image of British faith. The Temple of Victory, intended to commemorate the Battle of Minden, of 1 August when the French were defeated by combined British and Hanoverian force under Augusta s brother, was set midway in the garden, on a mount, serving as a platform to view both the palace at one end and the Great Pagoda at the other. At the far end of the meadow three buildings were erected to mark the ends of the earth - the Turkish mosque and the Alhambra, facing one another on a cross-axis, denoting the eastern and western ends of the Mediterranean trading basin, and, at the furthest point, the Great Pagoda, rivaling in height Nanking s Porcelain Tower, an emblem of the civilization most remote from Britain, but nonetheless clearly open to mercantile endeavour - Millard. Folio, title, dedication leaf, 8pp. text, 43 engraved plates and plans by Rooker, Woollett, Grignion, Paul Sandby, et al., after William Kent, Chambers, Smeaton, Sandby, Cipriani, and others, uncut, modern half calf gilt, a fine copy. 44 42. CLAUDE LORRAIN [i.e. Claude Gelee]. Liber veritatis. Or, A Collection of Two Hundred Prints, after the Original Designs... in the Collection of... the Duke of Devonshire. John Boydell [volumes I-II] and Thomas Davison for Hurst, Robinson, and Co. [volume III], London A landmark in the history of reproduction of master drawings (Abbey). Claude s Liber veritatis was a bound volume in which he drew copies of his own paintings and recorded details of commissions from about Although there are omissions -- particularly in the early years -- the Liber veritatis is a record of a major artist s oeuvre without parallel until the 20th century, and one which served in Claude s own lifetime both as a safeguard against forgeries and as a visual resource. The volume of drawings was eventually acquired by the Dukes of Devonshire, and Boydell s Liber veritatis reproduces both these drawings and examples of Claude s works from the great English collections of the period, including those of Richard Payne Knight, Alderman Hibbert, the Earl Spencer, Charles Lambert, Joseph Farrington, George Gosling, and Edmund Turnor. The accompanying text not only translates and transcribes Claude s annotations on the versos of the drawings, but also gives the names of the contemporary owners of the pictures, and details of engravings of the pictures. The purpose of the work was to establish a corpus of works known to be by the artist, in order to facilitate the detection of forgeries and the correct identification of genuine drawings, and, as Abbey states, the result was a real catalogue raisonne. This is a mixed set comprising early editions of volumes I and II, and a later edition of volume III (1819 rather than 1817). These represent Mughal and Dravidian monuments, cityscapes and sublime views of mountains and waterfalls and formed the most extensive work of its kind, finding subscribers throughout Britain as well as in Calcutta and Madras (ODNB). 48 47. DANIELL, William and Thomas. A picturesque voyage to India by the way of China. Longmans, London, Rarely found in this condition, a fine copy of the first edition of this illustrated voyage, which shows well the Daniells love of river scenes not just bare statements of fact but pleasant, well-balanced compositions (Sutton). The pictures of Calcutta are particularlty noteworthy; Calcutta from the Garden Reach is one of the most famous of the Daniell pictures. It is one of the rare instances in which reference was made at a later date to a drawing by another artist, as certain of the buildings shown were not in existence during the Daniells time in India. The penultimate plate shows the Old Fort Gaut containing the notorious Black Hole of Calcutta. Other plates show Malaya, Java, Straits of Malacca, approximately 22 plates of China, and the remaining five of India, Bay of Bengal and two on the River Hoogly. Folio, 50 handcoloured aquatint plates on thick paper with ruled and grey wash borders, contemporary French green straight-grained morocco gilt, all edges gilt, neat repairs to joints, a fine copy. 49 48. DIDEROT, Denis; Jean Le Rond D Alembert. Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers [...] Briasson, D. Le Breton, Durand, & Neuchatel, Faulche, Paris and MM Rey, Amsterdam, First edition of the finest, most extensive and famous encyclopedic work on the sciences, arts and professions of the 18th century, a revolutionary monument in the history of European thought. The importance of the frequently republished but never surpassed first edition is to be found in the contributions of over 200 philosophers, writers, scientists and jurists of the era of Enlightenment, like Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Buffon, Marmontel, Necker, Condorcet, Turgot and others. The greater part of the entries however, was written by the editors Diderot ( ) and d Alembert ( ), followed by Baron Holbach (who contributed about 400 articles). Moreover, the encyclopaedia is famous for its fine and accurate engravings, and is still a primary source for the study of 18th century civilisation. It contains, according to the number of plates given on the title-pages, 3129 plates because double, triple or quadruple folding plates are counted as 2, 3, or 4, adding up to the amount of 2796 plates (as in our copy). The first seven volumes, with articles by Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu and many other figureheads of the Enlightenment, were published at Paris under a royal privilege, which was however withdrawn in 1759, after which the project was closed down. The remaining volumes were printed secretly with a fictitious imprint. The plate-vols. have a different history, since they were not considered being subversive; they were published in Paris between The supplement volumes were published in one edition only, but in two issues, one with a Paris imprint, the other with an Amsterdam imprint, edited by Jean Baptiste Rene Robinet ( ). The supplementary volume of plates has the imprint Amst. and Paris. The two-vol. index was published in 1780 and edited by Pierre Mouchon ( ). 35 volumes, folio (39 x 25cm). 50 49. FERRIOL, Charles de, Marquis. Recueil de cent estampes representante differentes nations du Levant, tirees sur les tableaux peints d apres nature en 1707 et Le Hay & Duchange, Paris This important work forms the basic prototype for Levantine costume plates (Atabey). The plates for this work were commissioned by Charles de Ferriol French Ambassador to the Porte between 1699 and 1709; they were engraved after drawings by the Flemish artist J.B. van Mour, who lived and worked in Constantinople for many years during the first part of the eighteenth century. Van Mour s paintings (and the plates that derive from them) show Constantinople as a cosmopolitan place with Muslims and non-muslims uniting in shared Ottoman pleasures. Armenians, Franks, Greeks and Persians are shown drinking coffee, playing mankeh (a version of backgammon), or making music. In addition to the sixty or so plates depicting Turkish Court, noble, military and other costume, the work illustrates the regional, religious or national costume of several other parts of the Turkish Empire. These include Greeks (10); Albanians (2); Jews (3); Hungarians (2); Wallachians (3); Bulgarians (2); Crimean Tartars (1); Armenians (5); Persians (2); Indians (2); Arabs (1); Barbary Coast (4); and Moors (1). 51 50. FORREST, Lieut-Col. Charles Ramus. A picturesque tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna in India. L. Harrison for R. Ackermann, London, 1824 [text watermarked 1824; plates, ]. First edition of this cornerstone work on the Indian sub-continent. Forrest s views are thought to exceed those of all other amateur artists, two especially fine plates along the Yamuna being those of the Taj Mahal and the Palace of the King of Delhi. The drawings are all attentively copied from nature, and in many instances coloured on the spot, and always the magic effects of the scenes represented were still impressed on [Forrest s]... mental vision. The reader will recollect with indulgence, that the colouring of these views, which so far exceeds that of the scenery of Europe, is but a just portrait of the enchanting features of India, eternally glowing in the brilliant glory of the resplendent Asiatic sun (Preface). Large 4to (33.5 x 27.2cm). Title and final text leaf with hand-coloured aquatint vignettes, engraved folding map, 24 fine hand-coloured aquatint views by G. Hunt and T. Sutherland after Forrest. Waddington Galleries, London A monumental book with striking full-page etchings by Frink depicting the figures, animals and birds that characterise her work. The etchings were printed by Cliff White at White Ink Ltd., London and illustrate The Prologue, The Knight s Tale, The Miller s Tale I, The Miller s Tale II, The Reeve s Tale, The Shipman s Tale, The Prioress s Tale, Chaucer s Tale of Sir Topaz, The Nun s Priest s Tale, The Physician s Tale, The Pardoner s Tale, The Wife of Bath s Tale, The Summoner s Tale, The Clerk s Tale, The Merchant s Tale, The Squire s Tale, The Franklin s Tale, The Second Nun s Tale and The Manciple s Tale. Her Canterbury Tales contains nineteen etchings drawn directly onto copper plates and etched by Frink, and the book was issued in three limited editions. Her illustrations have been both excessively praised as amongst the most successful illustrations of the century, encompassing the mood of the text in concise delineations and disarmingly ribald humour. (Sarah Kent, in Houfe 1994: 203). Elisabeth Frink was born in Suffolk in 1930 and became one of Britain s most eminent sculptors. She had attended Guildford School of Art, followed by Chelsea School of Art and had her first major exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London, when she was only twenty-two. Throughout her lifetime she was known as one of the most accomplished sculptors of animal and human forms: men, dogs, horses and birds were a constant subject-matter throughout. Her graphic work and drawings followed the same themes, being executed with the simplicity and also feeling for surface texture that is to be found in her sculptural work. Large folio. In this remarkable series, Goya has immortalised the valour and skill of his [bull-fighting] contemporaries (Harris). The Tauromaquia, is a faithful reflection of the passion that Goya felt for bullfighting. It was a work in which he tried to catch, in his own words an idea of the beginnings, progress and present state of these celebrations in Spain. First published in 1816 in a series of 33 plates, and again in 1855, this third edition printed in Paris by Loizelet is the first to include seven rejected plates. However, as Talbot commented at the time, [the Committee] are so extraordinarily stingy, notwithstanding they have a surplus of 200,000, and make such hard conditions with [Henneman], that it is doubtful whether he will earn anything by his labour (Gernsheim, p.207). If 130 copies were completed it is slightly surprising that sets are as rare as they seem to be. Provenance: Philip Pusey ( ; agriculturist, long-time MP for Berkshire, and brother of the high churchman Edward Bouverie. Pusey established a formidable reputation as an agricultural improver, and it was probably no surprise that he should be chosen as a Commissioner, and given the responsibility for the agricultural implement section of the Exhibition. He arranged for 500 labourers to visit the Exhibition, generosity that was recognised by the presentation of a snuff box. It should be added that Pusey was a member of the first committee of the London Library, 1840). Five works in nine volumes, folio (34.7 x 25cm.). I. 59 Extremely rare 58. HERRING, John Frederick, Senior. Portraits of the Winning Horses of the Great St. Leger Stakes. From the year 1815 to the present year inclusive L. Harrison for S. and J. Fuller, London 1829 Herring s finest work, the outcome of his fascination with horse racing, and the St. Leger in particular. In the writer s estimation, the first series of the St. Leger winners contains the very best of Herring prints... they were engraved by Sutherland, a more competant aquatinter and colourist than his successors who handled these racehorses. - Siltzer. Herring spent the first eighteen years of his life in London, where his father, an American, was a fringe-maker in Newgate Street. Having married against his father s wishes, he went to Doncaster, where he arrived during the races in September 1814, and saw the Duke of Hamilton s horse, William, win the St. Leger. The sight inspired him to attempt the art of animal-painting, in which he subsequently excelled. He painted Filho da Puta, the winner of the St. Leger in 1815, and for the following thirty-two years painted each winner in succession. Herring s series of Portraits... were painted annually and quickly reproduced in large showy aquatints, the horses made literally glossy by the application of varnish to the paper (Diana Donald, Picturing Animals in Britain , New Haven, CT, 2007, p.215). This is the second edition of this series of wonderful racehorse portraits. It was first published as a suite of 10 plates in 1824 by Sheardown and Son of Doncaster, S. and J. Fuller of London purchased these in 1827, and continued to publish, periodically, the St. Leger winner series up to The earlier plates were all recaptioned with Fuller s imprint - and the first plate in the present work, Filho da Puta, is on paper watermarked Extremely rare (Tooley). Second edition. Large folio (42 x 60cm), Letterpress title with engraved vignette, list of subscribers, winners of the St Leger , 14 hand -coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and R.G. Reeve after Herring, each with letterpress description of riders and winners of other races and the St Leger stakes for each year, ( plates watermarked ) very slight offsetting to text, bound in recent half burgundy morocco with contemporary drab boards with large printed label on upper cover, extremities rubbed; otherwise a superb example of this rare work. 60 59. HOCKNEY, David. Off the wall Hockney posters. Pavilion Books, London Inscribed on the half-title: For Andrew / David Hockney. This text offers a selection of posters by David Hockney taken from Brian Baggot s collection. It features 38 images reproduced as full size colour posters, as well as a complete colour pictorial index, including Hockney s whole output of posters from 1961 up to 1994, arranged in chronological order. Hockney s interest in a variety of media enables his work to travel across cultures and to cross the boundaries of fine art. His posters illustrate this diversity. They have been used to advertise his own exhibitions and shows, as well as plays, operas and dance performances. Hockney follows on in the artistic tradition of Toulouse-Lautrec and German art of the 1920s. He uses experimental techniques or unusual materials to create the overall effect. This effect often uses typographical features and verbal puns which become central elements in the design. 60. [Hand coloured CHIVALRY]. The tournament, or days of chivalry. Upon returning to Paris in 1779, he exhibited several of his Italian views at the Salon (with Catherine II of Russia purchasing hundreds of his original drawings). 66 Magnificent red morocco 66. KNIPHOF, Johann Hieronymus. Botanica in originali, seu Herbarium vivum. Halae Magderburgicae, [1757]-67. A magnificently bound example of a landmark in botanical illustration and nature-printing, as well as being one of the earliest works to adopt the Linnaen system, and being the most complete local flora produced up to that time. Kniphof ( ), lived and died in the city of Erfut. He became a member of the academy of naturalists of his city in 1733, about the time he first published natureprinted pictures, and later became its librarian. From 1737 he was professor of medicine at the University of Erfut, and from 1745 professor of anatomy, surgery, and botany. Nature printing itself is a printing process, developed in the eighteenth century, that uses the plants, animals, rocks and other natural subjects to produce an image. The subject undergoes several stages to give a direct impression on paper. The impressions were produced by the substitution of printer s ink for lampblack and flat pressure for the smoothing bone. They were then coloured by hand according to Nature, a proceeding which greatly contributed to the beauty and fidelity of the images, although it had the disadvantage of sometimes rendering indistinct the tender structure of finer veins and fibres. Nature printing reached a peak of popularity in the nineteenth century. Eighteenth century examples such as the present work are few and because of the laborious, hand-made process of producing the book, most copies will show some difference in contents. In this context it is quite usual for the number of index pages to vary from one copy to another. Because of the fragile nature of the treated plant, only a very few copies could be produced, making such books inherently rare and expensive. The present work is also notable for being an early example of Taxonomic arrangement according to the Linnean system. Carl Linneaus introduced this in his work Systema Naturae in Furthermore, it also serves as a concrete record of the plants found in Germany, and particularly in and aroud Erfut, at that time. The rarity of the book combined with its superb state of preservation in fine fresh contemporary red morocco, makes the present copy particularly desirable. First edition. 12 parts in 4 volumes, folio (39 x 26cm. approx), 12 pictorial title-pages (only 11 were actually issued - there was only one title-page for volumes I & II, in the present copy a duplicate of the title for part VIII has been adapted for use as title for vol I) and 1200 plates, nature printed, coloured by hand, sometimes printed in a coloured or grey ink, particularly the title-pages with different floral borders. A total of 20 preliminary text pages along with 18 pages (of 30) of indices, together with the 4 page dedication to Frederic V of Denmark, without the 16pp of general index sometimes found in vol XII, usual offsetting to plates, contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with gilt ruled borders, spines 7 compartments, gilt lettered direct in second and third, others with gilt floral and other tools, raised bands, all edges gilt, a fine set. Felssecker for Knorrs Heirs], Nuremberg, A magnificent copy in contemporary red morocco, of the most important work on fossils of the eighteenth century. As the Dictionary of Scientific Biography says of the Knorr illustrations, the detail and accuracy... not only made possible zoological classification but firmly established the distinction between fossils of organic origin and sports of nature (DSB 7:412). The plates were largely made from drawings after samples supplied by the owners of cabinets such as J. C. Gmelinus, pharmacist in Turingen, Johann Gessner, professor in Bern, Collison, Knoerr, Trew, and others. Some 58 plates feature fossils found at the quarries of Solenhofen. 69 Shocking originality (moma) 68. KRUCHENYKH, A[leksey Eliseevich] and O[lga Vladimirovna] ROZANOVA (artist). Utinoye gnezdyshko durnykh slov [Little Duck s Nest of Bad Words]. EUY, Petrograd, Fine, fresh example of one of the greatest Cubo-Futurist productions of the early Russian avant-garde - one of only 500 copies, this one with the collage title on the upper cover. A radical, futurist and innovative poet, Kruchenykh ( ) challenged the traditional book arts through experimentation with language, typography, illustration, reproduction techniques, and even variations of paper stocks. He quickly became known as the wild man of Russian literature. Originally a painter, he later worked in collaboration with other artists for his publications: first with Larionov and Goncharova in 1912, then extensively with Rozanova from 1913 onwards. The Duck s Nest is one of most striking examples of Kruchenykh s creations, remarkable less for their poetic innovations thank for their being presented in lithographed manuscript [entirely drawn by Rozanova]. In one fell swoop, Kruchenykh eliminated typeset printing from the picture, replacing it with manuscript culture (G. Janacek, in MoMA). Octavo (19 x 13.5 cm). 72 71. MADDOX, Willes. Views of Lansdown Tower, Bath. The favourite edifice of the late William Beckford Esq. Edmund English, Bath, Built on Lansdown Hill, just outside Bath, and standing 120 feet high, this neo-classical architectural folly was completed in 1827 for William Beckford to a design by Henry Goodridge. Beckford, who wished that he had built it forty feet higher, but admitted that such as it is, it is a famous landmark for drunken farmers on their way home from market, used the tower as both a library and a retreat, located at the end of pleasure gardens called Beckford s Ride which ran from his house in Lansdown Crescent up to the Tower at the top of Lansdown Hill; he made it his habit to ride up to the tower, view the progress of gardens and works, and walk down to breakfast. Beckford s own choice of the best of works of art, books and prints and rich furnishings from his previous residence, Fonthill Abbey, which he had sold in 1822, were re-housed in his double adjoining houses in Bath and at. Lansdown Tower. One long narrow room there was fitted out as an Oratory, where all the paintings were of devotional subjects and a marble Virgin and Child was bathed in light from a hidden skylight. The most striking feature of the Tower is the topmost gilded lantern, based on the temple at Tivoli and the Tower of the Winds at Athens, reached by a spiral staircase and offering excellent views over the surrounding countryside, but not open to the public. With a strong spyglass, Beckford could make out shipping in the Bristol Channel. Provenance: Knight & Son, 10 Milsom Street, Bath (inscription to front pastedown). First edition. Folio. 76 75. MAXIMILIAN I; Marx Treitzsaurwein. Kaiser Maximilians I. Triumph. Le triomphe de l empereur Maximilien I... d après les desseins de Hans Burgmair. Edited by Adam Bartsch. [WITH] Ehrenpforte. Arc triomphal de l empereur Maximilien I... d après les dessins d Albert Durer. Edited by Adam Bartsch. I. Vienna: Andrée Schmidt & London: J. Edwards, II. Vienna: widow of Alberti for T. Mollo, 1796 & Both works are printed from the original 16th-century blocks, now preserved at the Albertina Museum, Vienna. They were conceived to establish Emperor Maximilian I s place in the imperial Roman tradition and depict on a monumental scale a triumphal procession and arch which were purely imaginary compositions on paper, the most grandiloquent expression of the art of engraving (Bliss, p.126). Among the fine woodcuts is Dürer s Small Triumphal Chariot, celebrating Maximilian s marriage to Mary of Burgundy. Each woodblock was inscribed on the reverse with the name of the woodcutter and date of delivery - valuable for our knowledge of 16th-century print-making - and a manuscript table transcribing the artists s names included in the Seilern copy may provide information no longer fully recoverable from the blocks themselves. The present 1796 edition is the third, but the first to include the design programme written by Treitzsaurwein (1512) in accordance with the emperor s instructions. The Triumphal Arch, the complement of the Triumphal Procession, was originally conceived by the Tyrolean court painter and architect, Jörg Kolderer, as a miniature and developed under the direction of the Emperor by Johannes Stabius. Dürer supervised its execution in print and contributed ornamental details (cf. Strauss p. 504). The arch depicts Maximilian s political history, accomplishments such as his prowess in the chase and experience of artillery, and the genealogy of the House of Hapsburg. Editions were published in , , and The present fourth edition of 1799 was printed from 174 surviving blocks, while 18 etchings by Bartsch supplied the place of the rest. 77 76. MAYER, Luigi. Views in Egypt, Palestine, and other parts of the Ottoman Empire. Thomas Bensley for R. Bowyer,London This work contains views and accounts of travel in pre-napoleonic Egypt, Palestine and in Caramania, a part of Asia Minor hitherto unexplored, along with some curious selections from the islands of Rhodes and Cyprus, and the celebrated cities of Corinth, Carthage, and Tripoli. A student of Piranesi, Mayer ( ) made the illustrations when he was employed as the personal view painter for Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador at Constantinople from Houfe says that Mayer was the most accurate delineator of the Near East before David Roberts. The scenes here are quite memorable, not only for the impressive views of ancient monuments, but for their glimpses in to the lives and culture of the people. In addition to rather thrilling depictions of the exploration of Egyptian tombs, we see the luxurious domain of the wife of a Cairo merchant and the military exercises of the mamalukes, soldier-slaves who served the Ottoman provincial rulers--both of these things that would not be encountered by the ordinary traveller. Ainslie was an especially successful envoy, who adopted the Turkish manner of living and was thus more accepted and respected by the Ottomans than most foreigners. His good relations with his hosts no doubt procured access for his artist to areas generally barred to Westerners. The fine binding is by the German immigrant binders Staggemeier and Welcher, who were in partnership in London from about 1799 to Like Kalthoeber and several others German binders, they came to England to satisfy the fashionable need among gentry and nobility for elegant bindings, and in their heyday Staggemeier and Welcher were one of the most prolific workshops producing extra quality work in London. (Maggs Catalogue 1212) They were known for bindings with typically tasteful and often elaborate gilt decoration. The unusual hieroglyphic stamps used on the spine decoration are particularly appropriate and may have been developed expressly for copies of this work. The British Library Database of Bookbindings lists a copy of Views of Egypt in black stright-grain morocco by Staggemeier and Welcher decorated with Egyptian symbols. Provenance: Dayton Art Institute (bookplate). First editions. Three separately published works bound in one volume, folio (48.3 x 33.3cm.), engraved frontispiece portrait, 96 hand-coloured aquatint views, very fine contemporary russia, elaborately gilt, by Staggemeier & Welcher,(their ticket on front flyleaf), covers gilt with frame of Greek-key rolls on either side of a cresting roll, this frame enclosing another role of linked palmettes, raised bands, spine expertly rebacked retaining original backstrip, its compartments with unusual Egyptian hieroglypic designs, turn-ins with gilt chain roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece portrait of the artist and 96 Corners slightly bumped, a few small portions of the spine with vague crackles, occasional minor offsetting from plates, isolated faint marginal foxing, thumbing, or rust spots, but still a fine copy. 81 80. [SELLER, John]. The English Pilot. Part I Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head- Lands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports [ ] of England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Flanders, Spain, Portugal, to the Straights Mouth, with the Coasts of Barbary, and off to the Canary, Madera, Cape Verde, and Western Islands. Richard Mount and Thomas Page, London, Attractive example of this rare edition of the first series of chart-books published in England - possibly the only extant copy of this edition, which is not recorded in the English Short Title Catalogue and which we couldn t trace in British institutions. Adams & Waters record one example only, in the trade. While not the earliest English map- and chart-publisher, there is truth in the statement that Seller is the father of the English map trade, directly connected to many of the leading figures in the map trade into the 19th century. He was also the first English chartpublisher to make a real attempt to break the dominance of Dutch marine publishers such as the Blaeus, Coloms, Doncker, Goos and de Wit. One of the lasting monuments of his career is The English Pilot, a series of volumes giving sailing directions that remained in print from the late 17th century through most of the 18th. It was published in Navigations - Part I (this book) was the Southern Navigation (covering the sea-route from the Thames Estuary and southern North Sea to the Straits of Gibraltar); Part II was the Northern Navigation (Scandinavia and the North Sea), Book III (Mediterranean), Book IV (North America and the West Indies) and Book V (Africa). Confusingly, the volume for the Oriental Navigation was called Book III. The Southern Navigation was first published in 1672; it was of great utility and so was very successful, with 38 editions published up to The present edition is early, and important thus, made up of a mixture of plates from the stock of the publisher, Richard Mount and his partner Thomas Page. The detailed collation is available on request. Folio. Title, 82 pp. and 31 double-page engraved charts, one engraved map and numerous woodblock coastal profiles within text. 83 Nolli s great plan of Rome in its original presentation 81. NOLLI, Giambattista. Nuova pianta di Roma. Rome, Giambattista Nolli ( ) was an architect and surveyor who lived in Rome and devoted his life to documenting the architectural and urban foundations of the city. The fruit of his labour, La Pianta Grande di Roma is one of the most revealing and artistically designed urban plans of all time. The Nolli map is an ichnographic plan map of the city, as opposed to a bird s eye perspective, which was the dominant cartographic representation style prevalent before his work. Not only was Nolli one of the first people to construct an ichnographic map of Rome, his unique perspective has been copied ever since. The map depicts the city in astonishing detail, incorporating almost eight square miles, nearly two thousand sites of cultural significance, and 1320 buildings and monuments numbered and named in the accompanying index. Nolli accomplished this by using scientific surveying techniques, careful base drawings, and minutely prepared engravings. The map s graphic representations include a precise architectural scale, as well as a prominent compass rose, which notes both magnetic and astronomical north. The Nolli map is the first accurate map of Rome since antiquity and captures the city at the height of its cultural and artistic achievements (Tice et al.). The accompanying maps are the Giambattista Piranesi and Nolli s reduction of the larger map, and Nolli s tribute republication of the first true plan of Rome by Leonardo Bufalini. By re-producing Bufalini s map of 1551 on the same scale as his own Pianta Piccola, Nolli acknowledges his debt to his predecessor. Bufalini in turn relied on the ichnographic plan tradition best exemplified by Leonardo Da Vinci s plan of Imola, which itself drew upon Leon Battista Alberti s technique of city measurement through the use of polar coordinates. Interestingly, Alberti developed this system in Rome by recording the angles of sightings of major landmarks in the city from the tower on the Campidoglio s Palazzo Senatorio, and plotting these against distances measured from the tower to the same landmarks. Only Alberti s measurements survive; his map, if ever drawn, does not. Nolli used this technique and complemented it with innumerable triangulations in the field. This is illustrated in the ornamental vignette by Stefano Pozzi at the bottom right of the plan by the two putti measuring distances with a surveyor s folding chain and by the putto recording the results on a plane-table upon which rests an alidade for taking sightings. Folio (48.5 x 38 cm). Engraved title, Advice to the reader, double-page maps of modern and ancient Rome, large plan on 12 engraved double-page mapsheets (app. 43 x 67 cm each), 4 pp. alphabetical index, 4pp. numerical index; map of modern Rome supplied from shorter copy, occasional spotting. Rees and others, London, Fresh example of the first edition in English of an extremely charming colour plate book [which] deserves a place in every colour plate book collection for its numerous attractive coloured vignettes, an unusual feature (Tooley). Pallas second and most picturesque travel, which lasted 6 years from 1768 to 1774, took his team (including the artist Geissler) in a scientific journey along the Volga to Astrakhan, the Caspian Sea, and then the Caucasus and Taurida, that is the Crimea, to which the entire second volume is dedicated. A handsome production due mainly to the numerous attractive and charming handcoloured illustrations which appear as vignettes in the text as well as additional plates. 85 84. PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista. Diverse maniere d adornare i cammini ed ogni altra parte degli edifizi desunte dall architettura Egizia, Etrusca, Greca. Rome: Generoso Salomon, A handbook for stone carvers and decorators, Piranesi proposes the adoption of decorative details of an imaginary Egyptian and Greek style and mingling it with Roman- and Etruscan-derived compositions. Piranesi s celebrated chimneypiece designs very effectively demonstrate this imaginative application of the past to the present since this interior feature had no precedent in antiquity. Amongst the designs executed was one for the Earl of Exeter at Burghly House. The work also provided new inspiration for Robert Adam. Folio. (50 x 41cm). Texts in Italian, English, and French. Le Vesuve, avec l histoire de ses eeruptions les plus connues. Les moeurs & usages du peuple Napolitain, ainsi qu une idee de son gouvernement, du commerce & des productions naturelles de ce pays. Clousier, Paris A superb copy bound by Derome le jeune. Saint-Non originally travelled to Italy in 1759 with Fragonard and Robert. He produced a series of collections of engravings as a result and, encouraged by the success of these, in 1777 he planned the far more ambitious Voyage Pittoresque, an account of his travels in Southern Italy. Although he already had much material, it needed to be supplemented with more contemporary accounts and illustrations of the eruption of Vesuvius etc. An expedition was sent through Naples and Sicily under Denon whilst Saint-Non remained in France to supervise the production of the prints and to organize the material for publication. The work was arranged in narrative style freely borrowing from D Hancarville, Hamilton and others for additional material. Some of the most important illustrators of the time were used including Cochin and Saint-Aubin. Throughout the work Saint-Non strove to maintain the interest of his subscribers by making the work entertaining, often including popular spectacles at the expense of more worthy historical material. The completed work is one of the most beautiful that a private person has ever produced, and it is unparalled among the sumptuous voyages pittoresques publications. The ambitious undertaking became the model for later voyages pittoresques. (Millard). First edition. 4 volumes bound in 5, large folio (52 x 35 cm approx.), 5 title vignettes, engraved dedication to the Queen, 384 engraved plates (including 7 maps), some showing 2 subjects, 4 additional maps and plans, 15 head- and 96 tail-pieces, complete with the Phallus plate in vol ii, and the 14 engraved plates of medals known as planches doubles de medailles in vol iv (not always present). this copy collated against Brunet and complete both in text and illustration, with occasional trivial differences to plate order, with plates 87 and 88 in vol. iii marked 15 and 24bis which Brunet calls premieres epreuves, plates 84, 85, and 86 in the same volume numbered 24, 11, and 12 as in the Millard copy, occasional browning, contemporary red morocco gilt by Derome le jeune with his ticket, covers with gilt borders, spines in eight compartments, gilt lettered direct in second and third, others with gilt panels and small centre-tool, raised bands, all edges gilt, a magnificent copy. 91 92. SEYMOUR, James. [Twelve prints of hunters and running horses taken in various actions]. London: Bowles & Carver, [ca. 1800]. Numerous engravings after Seymour helped to popularize sporting art (ODNB). His paintings of horses lack the anatomical knowledge which Stubbs was to bring to the art, but his originality laid in his ability to enliven the conventional horse portrait by conveying, sometimes humorously, some sense of the personality of a horse, and of its accompanying groom or dog. 93. Johannes Galle, Antwerp, [early 17th century]. A fine example with outstanding provenance. This fine volume contains two scarce works by Stradanus, or Jan van der Straet, who worked mainly drawing cartoons for tapestries. He was employed by Cosimo de Medici from to design a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing to hang in the rooms of the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. The Venationes magnificently commemorates these designs (and many others) depicting the traditional hunting methods of the renaissance with fanciful subjects of Eastern origin. It is a striking collection of scenes of hunting on land, in the air and on water, mixed with several semimythological scenes of dragons, sea-monsters and gods. The present edition does not contain the dedication leaf to Cosimo de Medici found in the first edition. The second work is a rare collection of plates of horses drawn from those in the stables of Don John of Austria and depicts forty breeds set against landscape backgrounds. Provenance: Koch collection (owl and book bookplate to upper pastedown); H. Gallice (bookplate); Marcel Jeanson (bookplate, his sale Sotheby s Monaco, 1st March 1987, lot 542). James Ridgway, London The most attractive Australian flora, from the early decades of settlement, and a fundamental work of Australian botany. In this handsome work the European public had a beautiful and extensively illustrated catalogue of newly-discovered South Seas flowering plants for the first time. Robert Sweet was an English professional horticulturalist with an interest in plants that were handsome and curious. He promoted exotics for English gardens and hothouses. One of his finest works is the Flora Australica. Of special note is the fact that Sweet grew nearly all the specimens hiimself in London from seed sent from Australia by William Baxter. This makes this the first work of Australian botany based entirely on living specimens. The present copy is extra-illustrated with 92 plates of exotics (principally from South Africa, China, and the Americas) taken from Sydenham Edwards Botanical Register. This was an illustrated horticultural magazine that ran from 1815 to Edwards illustrations turned out to be enormously popular. He flourished during a period when adventure-filled collecting expeditions were made to previously unknown corners of the earth. These expeditions gripped the public imagination and the desire for new plants and illustrations seemed to be endless. First edition. Royal 8vo., iv, 112pp., 56 hand-coloured engraved plates, some folding, by S. Watts after Edwin Dalton Smith, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 92 hand-coloured plates and text from Sydenham Edwards Botanical Register, contemporary green half morocco, rebacked preserving most of spine, rather rubbed, marbled boards renewed. 95 98. WILLIAMSON, Captain Thomas; Samuel Howett Oriental field sports; being a complete, detailed, and accurate description of the wild sports of the East; exhibiting, in a novel and interesting manner, the natural history of the elephant, the rhinoceros, the tiger, the leopard, the bear, the deer, the buffalo, the wolf, the wild hog, the jackall, the wild dog, the civit, and other undomesticated animals: as likewise the different species of feathered game, fishes, and serpents. Edward Orme, London [1805] The most beautiful book on Indian sport in existence (Schwerdt). A fine, fresh copy of the first edition of this celebrated work on hunting. Captain Williamson was an extremely talented amateur artist who had built up a fine collection of sketches suitable for turning in to aquatint. He teamed up with Howett - a notable sportsman as well as an industrious engraver of animals to produce this magnificent work, widely considered to contain the finest images of field sports of the Orient. By their very nature aquatint books were always very expensive, but the British public had a great curiosity about India and Williamson s work helped satisfy this desire to know more about the customs of Britain s new addition to the empire. Provenance: A pencil note states that this was purchased at Viscount Selby s sale in 1948 for 47, and that the binding cost 6.10s.0d. Large landscape folio (59 x 47cm. approx.), iii, 150 pp., hand-coloured pictorial half-title, 40 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, Plate XXXI is in Tooley s presumed first issue, reading Hunting Jackals (and not Jackals rescuing a hunted brother ), plates dated 1805, 1806 and 1807, modern brown half morocco gilt by Bayntun. 96 99. WOOD, William. A series of twenty-eight panoramic views of Calcutta. William Wood, London, An early series of lithographed views of the city. Wood arrived in Calcutta in 1828 to assist his brother, George, who was the superintendent of the Asiatic Lithographic Press, established at Park Street in the 1820 s. His series of prints presents an almost continuous panorama of buildings as viewed from the Maidan. Starting with Chandpal Ghat, they extend along Esplanade Row and then turn into Chowringhee. Several mansions appear still under construction using bamboo scaffolding; in the foreground, people tend their animals, wash their clothes or themselves in the public tanks and relax in groups, smoking their hookahs. First edition. 7 parts in one volume, folio (54.6 x 36.7cm). General typographic title. 28 lithographic plates on regular paper. (Scattered spotting). Modern green leather, preserving the original wrappers with upper lithographic covers and lists of subscribers to versos bound in (tiny adhesion spot to upper wrapper of part one, upper wrapper to part 6 unevenly browned). 97 100. ZOCCHI, Giuseppe. &c. &c. Giuseppe Allegrini, Firenze [1744] A complete set of the finest pictorial record of the historical architecture of Florence in the eighteenth century. Zocchi, a painter, draftsman, and etcher, was the protege of Gerini who commissioned these prints and also paid for his artistic education in Rome, Bologna, and Lombardy. Although he painted easel and mural paintings, Zocchi s oeuvre is richest in drawings and prints. The present series was etched by a team of twelve artists after Zocchi s designs. The four most important squares are shown during a significant festivity and are possibly the earliest views Zocchi made for this series. The broadest depictions of the city are found in the six views structured around the River Arno. They display the uses of the river, the splendid bridges that cross it, and the great buildings along its shore. The other views are a mixture of secular and religious spaces and buildings. They present Florence in a fine light; beautiful architecture combined with a lively population. Consistently celebrative and accomplished, this collection shows a city striving to maintain a placid and prosperous appearance; Zocchi s limpid vision, similar to Carlevaris and Visentini s interpretations of Venice, endow the city with cohesion and serenity (Millard). Broadsheet folio (76.5 x 61cm). Double-page engraved allegorical title page, engraved dedication, engraved map, 24 double-page etched and engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, engraved by Corsi, Franceschini, Gabuggiani, Gregori, Papini, Muller, Marieschi, Monaco, Pazzi Pfeffel, Seuter, Sgrilli, Vasi, after drawings by Zocchi, modern red morocco-backed Itlalian marbled boards, vellum tips by Aquarius, verso of map with old repair, a fine copy.
