The magazine was intended to entertain, inform and educate the women of America. In addition to extensive fashion descriptions and plates, the early issues included biographical sketches, articles about mineralogy, handcrafts, female costume, the dance, equestrienne procedures, health and hygiene, recipes and remedies and the like. Each issue also contained two pages of sheet music, written essentially for the pianoforte. Gradually the periodical matured into an important literary magazine containing extensive book reviews and works by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and many other celebrated 19th century authors who regularly furnished the magazine with essays, poetry and short stories. 3 Accessible Archives National Anti-Slavery Standard National Anti-Slavery Standard was the official newspaper of the American Anti- Slavery Society, an abolitionist society founded in 1833 by William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan to spread their movement across the nation with printed materials. Frederick Douglass was a key leader of this society and often addressed meetings at its New York City headquarters. National Anti-Slavery Standard was established in 1840 by a husband and wife team who both were affirmed abolitionists as well as recognized successful writers. The Standard sought to extend the rights of slaves across the United States. It implied not only suffrage rights for colored males, but also advocated suffrage for women. The newspapre was one of the most influential voices for abolition leading up to the American Civil War. Garrison was a journalistic crusader who advocated the immediate emancipation of all slaves and gained a national reputation for being one of the most radical of American abolitionists.
