BOOKS Pick the following: 1) Book Create Citation 2) Select: Book 3) Select: Printed Book (Select Electronic Book if you are accessing the book online) 4) Select: a) The entire book (note: you will not be prompted to enter page numbers) if you are taking notes from the entire book b) A special section of the book (like an introduction or preface) if you are citing a specific article within a book written by a different author / if you are citing a primary source within a secondary source Sample Book Source: Title Date of Publication Author Publisher Publication City **If the book is part of a series, include the name of the series under Series Name A. ONLINE DATABASES How do I determine whether or not my article is original content? 1) Look at your source citation 2) Choose Yes, if the citation has ONLY the database name after the article title Example: Article Title Database Name 3) Choose No, if the citation has the title of another source before the database name Example: Article Title Database Name a. To determine the publication type, use the key provided in the database: Example: Gale SIRS 6

Book Select A special section of the book Select Yes. I will provide the publication details of the original print publication in my citation. v. Reference Source Select Yes. I will provide the publication details of the original print publication in my citation. Click Next button 4) Fill in citation information. Database Specific Sample Citations A. ABC-CLIO MOST of ABC-CLIO articles are Original Content and therefore you select YES, this is original content created for the database However, Refer to steps 1-4 above for exceptions. 8 B. EBSCO I. POINTS OF VIEW + STUDENT RESEARCH CENTER To determine the publication type, click on the name of the source. In this example after clicking on the name of the source Points of View: School Uniforms we see that the publication type is a Reference Book (highlighted in yellow). Therefore, select Reference as publication type. Sample Citation: 8
9 **Special Note** For Publication Type: Biography Select Book Special Section of a book unless the word Encyclopedia is in the title, then select Reference 9
10 C. FACTS ON FILE I. FACTS ON FILE HISTORY SEARCH The publication type for Facts on File articles (Biography, Topics, Events) is typically Reference Source. However, SOME of the Primary Sources in Facts on File are Original Content and therefore you must select YES, this is original content created for the database Sample Citation: II. FACTS ON FILE ISSUES AND CONTROVERSIES Facts on File Issues and Controversies articles are Original Content and therefore you must select YES, this is original content created for the database 10
11 D. GALE BIOGRAPHY IN CONTEXT AND OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS IN CONTEXT Biography in Context Use the key to determine the publication type. Sample Citation: 11
12 Opposing Viewpoints in Context Use the key to determine the publication type. If you used a Viewpoint or Featured Viewpoint Article, Select: Online Database Reference Source Encyclopedia/Bio Dictionary, Article, Yes I will provide publication details. AND, Use information only up to the most recent copyright date ALSO, Remember to provide the Database Name (Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context) Even though it is not provided in the citation Example (only use information in red line, up to most recent copyright): 12
13 E. GALE VIRTUAL REFERENCE Gale Virtual Reference is a database of reference e-books Therefore the publication type will always be a Reference Source Sample Citation: F. GROLIER All of Groliers articles are Original Content and therefore you select YES, this is original content created for the database Database Names are listed in the key below For the red circled example, the Name of online database would be: Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia In th e Grolier article click on the How to cite this article link and use the MLA citation to fill in the necessary information 13

15 G. SIRS To determine the publication type, look at the icon next to your result. Use the key to determine the publication type. In this example the publication type is a reference source. Therefore, choose reference source as the publication type. There are four databases within SIRS. Refer to the second italicized phrase in your citation to determine the database name In this example, the Name of the Online Database is SIRS Researcher (It will come up in Noodletools as SIRS Issues Researcher ) 15
