Each page is a fingerprint animal that represents one letter of the alphabet along with a phrase or sentence. For example, the Letter K page is K is for Koala: From a country Down Under. The picture is a Koala on a tree and it is drawn from two textured fingerprints, one for the head and one for the body. The next page finishes the rhyme with L is for Lion: With a roar like Thunder. What I like about this book is it not only addresses the alphabet but also animals, colors, rhyme, and some simple vocabulary. For little ones, the fingerprint illustrations are textured. Puppy Mudge loves his blanket. He takes it with him everywhere. The story introduces Mudge as Henry s Puppy and shows the readers how much he loves his blanket. He sleeps on it and takes it places. Then he loses it. Henry and Mudge look in different places like under the chair and under a bed but no blanket, Then Mudge starts sniffing and it takes him to his blanket! This is a cute story for beginning readers that introduces them to the characters of Henry and Mudge. The pictures, although drawn by a different illustrator, are similar to the original pictures of the series. There are simple sentences on each page that tell a story any young child would love and relate to. Title: Eloise Skates! 2 This beginning reader introduces children to the character of Eloise in a sweet, simple story. It is wintertime and Eloise is cold and bored until her Nanny takes her and her dog to the skating rink. Eloise puts on her winter clothes and dresses her dog as well. They head to the famous skating rink at Rockefeller Center and everything is decorated for Christmas. Eloise and her dog get on the ice. Eloise takes off onto the ice, runs into many people, and shows off some special moves including jumping into the air! But what will happen next? The story starts out with simple sentences but continues with longer, more interesting sentences as the story goes along. The illustrations are bold, colorful and reminiscent of the original illustrations. Young children will love the character of Eloise and her many antics. Title: The Black and White Factory Author(s): Eric Telchin Illustrator(s): Diego Funck Publisher: Little Bee Books/ (division of) Bonnier Publishing Ages: 3-6 Call Number: Juv PicBk Telchin, Eric Readers are welcomed in to a tour of The Black and White Factory where everything is black and white. The panda, penguin, and zebra characters only make things black and white like dominoes, eight balls, vanilla ice cream, salt and pepper, and tuxedos. Most importantly readers are given the hard and fast rules for the tour. There can be absolutely no messes, no colors of any kind, and there must be no surprises - ever. Everything must stay neatly in place and of course, black and white. During the book tour readers are instructed to interact with the pictures. For example, in order to enter the Animal Room readers are asked to push the buzzer on the page to open the door (turn the page) where cows and Dalmatians are given their spots; and then to push the elevator button on the page to continue on to the Barcode Room. Somehow colors begin to appear on the pages and the characters need the reader s help to get all the color out. But the colors and the cleaning creates a mess and things fall out of place. In order to see what happens and if they get the colors out and things back in order at the end of the tour read The Black and White Factory. The story is fun and silly. It engages the reader and there is some repetition in the rules. I would recommend for small storytimes and have volunteers to interact with the book. Her parents are separating. Her relationship with her best friend is changing. And, her grandmother is moving in for a while. Since her dad moved out, she won t be celebrating her birthday with her family and her best friend Mia. Instead, she and Mia will be going to a makeover party for popular girl, Hazel. However, on the morning of her tenth birthday, Cici unexpectedly sprouts a pair of shimmering pink wings. Cici's visiting abuela tells her that she is a hada. In our family, there have always been fairies. First, your wings grow in. Then, little by little, you discover your powers (p. 21). When Cici finally emerges from her bedroom and heads to the kitchen for breakfast, she sees her mom as an octopus, her little sister as a turtle and

4 abuela s dog as a dragon! Cici s abuela explains her newfound power of fairy sight. As a fairy, sometimes you will be able to see situations in a whole new way to see who people truly are (p. 28). Cici learns she has only one day to decide whether she wants to remain a fairy or to surrender her powers forever. With all of the confusion about her family and her friends swirling about her, what does Cici choose? This graphic novel contains some Spanish words and phrases, most of them in context. I did not feel that it added any real value to the story. A glossary would have been a useful and thoughtful addition. Title: What Milly Did: The Remarkable Pioneer of Plastics Recycling Author(s): Elise Moser Illustrator(s): Scot Ritchie Publisher: Groundwood Books Ages: 8 to 11 Call Number: Juv Bio Z33.8m Milly Zantow, along with her friend Jenny Ehl, founded E-Z Recycling in However, Milly s idea of recycling plastics started well before then. During WWII, when Milly was very young, resources were scarce and the recycling of scrap metal, rubber, and paper was necessary to survive. After the war, recycling was considered something poor people had to do though Milly thought recycling was just plain good for the environment. During a trip to Tokyo in 1978, Milly realized that the locals placed specific, separated trash types out on certain days and it got her thinking about what America was missing. She enlisted the help of her friend Jenny to found their company and that was just the beginning of her uphill battle and eventual victory in the battle of plastics recycling. Publisher: Firefly Books Ages: 7-11 Call Number: Juv D331b Each page of this book tells and illustrates the lives of bugs that would live in a typical backyard. The illustrations consist of large and dynamic photographs, that show great detail and enhance the narrative text. The author presents details of each bug s anatomy, life cycle, defense mechanisms and mating patterns. This book is filled with energy and drama. Not only will older children like this book, but teens and adults will enjoy it, too.

5 Two nice sections of the book are the glossary and index, both of which are on black pages at the end. Some bugs that are mentioned are cockroaches, ticks, cat fleas, and termites. This book is not for the faint of heart.
