2 c Vladimir Dixon Papers History of the Addendum In 1991, The A. Remizov and S. Remizova-Dovgello Papers were donated to the Amherst Center for Russian Culture by Thomas Whitney, Class of There is internal evidence to suggest that Konstantin Solntsev, former owner of The Remizov Papers, incorporated Dixon's materials into the A. Remizov and S. Remizova-Dovgello Papers. In 1994, both collections underwent archival appraisal according to modern archival standards. As a result The Dixon Papers were separated from the A. Remizov and S. Remizova Dovgello Papers. The Dixon Papers are now a separate collection. In 2009, John Dixon, son of Vladimir Dixon, donated his family papers to the Amherst Center for Russian Culture, thus reuniting two divided collections in one. 2

3 Scope and Content Note Description of the Addendum The Addendum documents the professional activities and personal life of Vladimir Dixon ) and reflects his longtime friendship with Russian emigre writer Alexei Remizov and his wife Serafima Remizova-Dovgello. They also include personal documents of his wife Juanita Dixon nee Wagner), his parents Liudmila and Walter Fr. Dixon, his parents-in-law, as well as photographs, printed matters and third party materials. 6.5 linear feet of a newly acquired donation represent materials pertaining to or collected by two related families - the Dixon and the Wagner families. These documents vividly reflect the life of Americans in Europe after World War I, the Singer Manufacturing Company, the life and writings of Russian emigres in Europe, and many other subjects. The bulk of the collection spans the dates There is internal evidence to suggest that Dixon's scrapbooks were compiled by A. Remizov after Dixon's unexpected death in December There are also financial statements and correspondence with Liudmila Dixon documenting Alexei Remizov's efforts to arrange and then publish posthumously Vladimir Dixon's books. Series Description of the Addendum The Addendum of the Vladimir Dixon Papers is organized into seven series: 1. Correspondence, Writings, Printed Materials, Family Documents, Student Activities, Third Party Materials, Photographs, Related Material: The Amherst Center for Russian Culture has information about V. Dixon beyond that found in this collection. Sources include Alexei Remizov Papers and Union of Russian Writers and Journalists Abroad Records. 4 Series 1, Correspondence, , 2.0 linear feet, is divided into two subseries: General Correspondence and Family Correspondence. Subseries 1, General Correspondence, , 0.5 linear feet, contains letters from and to Vladimir Dixon and his friends, business correspondence and letters from and to Juanita Dixon and her friends. There are also letters from Alexei Remizov and Serafima Remizova-Dovgello to Vladimir Dixon and Liudmila Dixon Vladimir Dixon's mother) related to a posthumous publication of Dixon's books. The series is organized by a recipient of a letter and then in chronological order. Subseries 2, Family Correspondence, , 1.5 linear feet, includes Vladimir Dixon's letters to his wife Juanita Dixon, his parents, his in-laws, and other relatives. It also includes Juanita's letters to Vladimir Dixon, her correspondence with parents and relatives. The series is organized alphabetically and each folder is in chronological order. Series 2, Writings, , 1.5 linear feet, includes Dixon's notebooks containing poems and essays; unpublished poems and manuscripts in holograph and typed form; Reviews and commentaries on Vladimir Dixon's published books, translations and scrapbooks compiled by Alexei Remizov. This series is arranged alphabetically by title. Series 3, Printed Materials, , 0.5 linear feet, consists of newspaper clippings, leaflets, journals, theater tickets and programs arranged by type of material. c Series 4, Family Documents, , 1.5 linear feet, contains copies and originals of personal documents, diaries and notebooks, financial statements, account books and checkbooks including Dixon's bequest to A. Remizov), genealogical notes, obituaries, old Russian bank notes, personal effects and materials related to the Singer Manufacturing Company. The series is arranged by a family member and then irt alphabetical order. Series 5, Student Activities, , 0.25 linear feet includes MIT lectures, research notes, MIT Thesis, and Harvard computation book. This series is arranged by type of material. Series 6, Third Party Materials, , 0.25 linear feet, consists of writings and personal documents of various people. This series is arranged by type of material and then in alphabetical order. Series 7, Photographs, , 0.5 linear feet, contains personal and family photographs, as well as photographs related to the Singer Manufacturing Company. The series is arranged by type of photographs. One record storage box is closed until further steps are taken to reformat molded materials. 4
