Howard Pickering Type Facsimile of an Early English Poem 1) The nutbrowne maid. From the earliest edition of Arnold s Chronicle. London: William Pickering, mo (14 cm, 5.5"). xvi, xxv pp., [4] ff. $ This little volume is one of the four ballads edited by Thomas Wright and published by Pickering in Keynes says each was printed in an edition of only 150 copies. The introduction and notes are printed in roman, the ballad itself in Caslon gothic letter. There is a wood-engraved vignette on the title-page and three other small wood-engraved cuts, one being an historiated initial, the others tail-pieces. The tale is a variant of the Griselda story that Boccaccio incorporated in the Decameron, a tribute to a woman s unwavering love despite years of abuse. The Nutbrowne Maid was first printed in 1503 in Arnold s Customs of London, in black letter in double-column format. This single-column format version is an early Victorian attempt at a type facsimile. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, ; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 96. Original Roxburghe-style binding of quarter maroon morocco and maroon paper covered boards. The treatyse of fysshynge wyth an angle. London: Printed... for William Pickering [by Thomas White], vo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., [2], xiii (pagination skips v viii), [1], 41, [1] pp.; 4 plts. $ First Pickering edition of the first known English work on fishing. Reprinted from the Boke of St. Albans, the famed sporting book originally published by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, this essay on angling is generally attributed although not certainly so to Dame Juliana Berners (or

2 Barnes), supposed prioress of Sopwell nunnery circa If that attribution is correct, this is not only the earliest printed English work on fishing, but also one of the earliest published English works by a female author. Regardless of its source, it seems to have served as an inspiration both to Izaak Walton and to William Pickering, who printed several editions of Walton, including a particularly lavish production in The volume is printed with the original language and spelling preserved, and is illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece of a fisherman taken from de Worde s 1518 edition that is cited as the earliest known depiction of an angler fishing with a rod, as well as with six woodcuts (provided at the back of the volume in the form of four plates) showing types of poles, hooks, etc. As the titlepage proclaims, the work was printed with the types of John Baskerville, making it one of the last such printings done in England. A later hand has helpfully added pencilled marginalia clarifying archaic or obscure terms and suggesting subject headers. This copy uncut and in original boards: Rare thus. NSTC 2B20037; Keynes, Pickering, 42. Beyond the scope of Gaskell, Baskerville.; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, Publisher s dun-colored light boards. Uncut copy. Light overall rubbing; spine with minor loss of paper. Old bookseller s description affixed to front free endpaper; small oval stain to corner of half-title and frontispiece, a bit of light offsetting from plates. A very nice copy in a later open-back cardboard slipcase. (30461) Handsomely Printed Black-Letter Edition of the Wycliffe N.T. 4) Bible. N.T. English (Middle English) Wycliffe. The New Testament in English translated by John Wycliffe. Chiswick: Pr. by Charles Whittingham for William Pickering, to (25 cm, 9.8"). [10], [248] ff.; 1 plt. $ The only non-greek New Testament published by Pickering. John Wycliffe (d. 1384) is revered as the first to translate the Bible into English as opposed to Anglo-Saxon and, though his heterodox religious opinions brought his translation (and those based on it) into disrepute at the time and well after, it circulated widely in manuscript. This grand Pickering Press edition announces itself as being from an early manuscript ( ca. 1380") that was formerly in the monastery of Sion Middlesex and late in the collection of Lea Wilson, F.S.A (of Norwood), and of that manuscript an extensive description appears as the preface here. Printed in a very handsome and legible English black-letter gothic font on Pouncy handmade paper, this Pickering Wycliffe N.T. is uncut, mostly unopened, and bears a red and black half-title and title-page, with a red and black version of the firm s printer s device incorporating the Aldine dolphin and anchor. The plate, which follows the half-title, depicts a page from the source manuscript, and the prefatory matter is printed in a handsome large roman. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Elizabeth Attwood on the front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 81; Herbert 1868; NSTC 2W Not in Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering; not in Pickering & Chatto, William Pickering (catalogue 708). On Wycliffe, see: Dictionary of National Biography, LXIII, Quarter black roan in imitation of morocco and marbled paper covered sides; rubbed with slight loss of leather and paper, corners bowed inward, front board with evidence of one-time crack (well repaired and now solid). Mild to occasional heavy foxing, with most leaves actually quite clean; light agetoning and typical offsetting from print to leaf opposite, throughout; one torn corner. Bookplate and label as above. Good to work with and a pleasure to handle. (38823)

3 Bishop Burnet s Instructive Lives 5) Burnet, Gilbert. Lives of Sir Matthew Hale and John Earl of Rochester. London: William Pickering, mo (15 cm, 5.9"). [2], v, [1], 174, add. engr. t.-p., pp. (first engr. t.-p. lacking). $ Second edition thus of these paired biographies, originally published separately in 1681 and 1680 respectively; but the first Pickering edition. The first work is an admiring tribute, written by a man who knew little of law but who considered Hale s life a pattern of virtue and usefulness; the preface offers a brief and rather biased look at the history of biography. A list of Hale s writings, both published and (then) unpublished, plus a list of the books he left to Lincoln s Inn in his will, are appended. The second work, an account of the legendary libertine, opens with an added titlepage (dated 1820) bearing an engraved portrait by R. Grave (Sir Matthew s engraved half-title not being present in this copy). Both biographies were admirably calculated to enforce the lessons of the moralist (p. iii). NSTC 2B60417; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, ; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 56. Period-style quarter light grey cloth and light blue paper covered sides, spine with printed paper label; engraved portrait of Hale lacking. Ex social club library with rubber-stamp on half-titles and main title-page but not the pretty engraved title-page introducing Rochester s life; no other markings.
