London: Printed by E[lizabeth] A[llde] for Robert Allot, mo (14 cm; 5.5"). 2 parts in 1 vol. I: [7] ff., 439, [1] pp. (p. [440] blank); II.[3] ff., 243, [3] pp. (pp. [244 [46] blank; numbers omitted in the sequence). $ All early English editions of St. Bernard s Meditations are rare. This translation of his Tractatus de interiori domo self-identies as The third edition, much amended by W.P. Mr. of Arts in Cambridge. That is, it is the third edition of W.P. s translation, the first of which appeared in 1611 and was proceeded by printings of earlier translations in 1499 and The identity of W.P. remains unknown and a cataloguer at Harvard dissents regarding Bernard s authorship, writing: Neither part is by Saint Bernard: the first piece in pt. [2] is a translation of Meditationes de interiori homine, also wrongly ascribed to Hugh of St. Victor. Searches of WorldCat, NUC, and ESTC locate only five copies in U.S. libraries, one having been deaccessioned and being the copy offered here. Harvard notes of its copy: Imperfect: lower half of the t.p. containing the edition statement and imprint wanting. The printer Elizabeth Allde was the widow of printer Edward Allde, who was active from 1584 to his death in 1628; he was successor to his printer father John Allde (variously Allde, Aldaye, Alde or Aldye), fl , a Scottish stationer and printer. Elizabeth was active from 1628 to 1633, at which latter date she passed the business to Richard Oulton (or Olton), her son-in-law. He continued the firm for another ten years only. Provenance: On the front free endpaper: From the Hon. Rev. Lowther Barrington, Buckinghamshire, Eng., STC (rev. ed.) 1920; ESTC S Recent full brown calf, late 17th-century style; raised bands accented with gilt rules above and below each band, modest blind fillet on boards, red spine label. Text cockled, waterstained, and with some browning; one leaf with small hole in text with loss to words in two lines on each side. [12] pp. (plus wrappers); illus. $ This interesting and attractive children s book from a woman printer/publisher contains poems, including a hymn on p. [12] (without music). It is illustrated with four half-page woodengraved, hand-colored images, and interestingly with several hand-colored woodcut large capitals.

2 The cataloguer at the Harris Collection of American Poetry at Brown University attributes authorship to Bolles. The title and imprint statement are transcribed from p. [1] of the printed wrapper, while the date of publication is based on New York city directories: Maria F.C. Marsh operated as a publisher, bookseller, and stationer in New York between 1860 and The woodengraved, hand-colored decorative border on the front wrappers is signed J.D. Felter N.Y. (i.e., John D. Felter). Provenance: From the children s book collection of Albert A. Howard, sans indicia. NUC and WorldCat find only two libraries reporting ownership (Brown, AAS). Original wrappers; later oversewing along spine. Folded once upon a time horizontally at midpoint, now causing fold tears in the wrappers; shorter tears in interior margins. Reds, greens, and yellows bright. (38817) Woman Author / Woman Printer London, Brook, Mary. Reasons for the necessity of silent waiting, in order to the solemn worship of God... third edition. This volume was compiled by one of the founding members of the Royal Dublin Society and inspired by Bishop Berkeley s 1744 publication Siris, Philosophical Reflexions and Inquiries Concerning the Virtues of Tar-water (which praise of tar-water as a universal panacea enraged doctors throughout Great Britain, resulting in a flurry of published debate); it makes several references to Siris, and concludes with two letters from Berkeley, featuring his instructions on how to make the best tar-water and use it most effectively.
