TRINITY COLLEGE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD OLD LIBRARY FUNDRAISING CATALOGUE

This year we are celebrating the 600th anniversary of the Old Library. When Trinity was founded in 1555, the College s first members moved into buildings which had belonged to Durham Cathedral Priory, and these included a firstfloor library room with glazed windows, shelves and desks. Sir Thomas Pope gave a large consignment of books and manuscripts, which he had been collecting for his new foundation, and the Library has been a vital and continuous resource for the College ever since. It is unusual, in Oxford, for a medieval library room to have retained its original purpose. In 1976 Trinity s library provision was significantly increased by the annexation of the large room above the bursary to accommodate a remarkable bequest of books from J. R. Danson (1912). Meanwhile the handsome shelves that were refitted in the Danson Library in 2011 are home to an ever-growing collection of rare and precious volumes. Trinity's libraries have always been at the heart of the College, providing a repository of knowledge and a working space for Fellows and scholars a particularly captivating one in the case of the Old Library. At the same time the fragile and historical volumes, along with the rooms which house them, are continuously the object of preservation work to ensure that they are handed down to future generations in the best possible state. We are marking the anniversary year with a number of celebratory events and a range of initiatives aimed at improving the Old and Danson library environment and conserving the collections as we look towards the next six hundred years. The Anniversary Dinner falling most appropriately on the Feast of the patron saint of libraries, St Jerome celebrates the date of the earliest record of the Durham College Library, the purchase of timber in The exhibition which precedes the dinner offers an opportunity to sponsor a range of projects, including the conservation of rare and valuable books; the purchases of exhibition cases and a book from the personal library of Trinity s second President; and the detailed cataloguing of some of our special collections. Also on display will be information on the latest technologies used in protecting ancient glass and managing it in a library environment. By supporting the event and, we hope, joining us on 30 th September, you will be helping the College to ensure that future generations of scholars and visitors from within Trinity and around the world, will continue to enjoy and use the libraries and collections we so value. Sharon Cure Stefano Evangelista Alan Coates Librarian Fellow Librarian Honorary Librarian of the Old Library 1

Instructions for using this catalogue The items in this catalogue will be on display in the Old Library and Danson Library during the Anniversary event on Saturday 30 th September. Each item will have a champion in attendance who will be able to answer questions. Some of the books are in a fragile condition so please do not handle them without assistance. Once you have chosen an item please tell its champion the amount you would like to sponsor and take the card you are given to the payment desk. The minimum individual contribution is 25 so you do not have to sponsor the whole amount for any item though you may do so if you wish. You can sponsor as many items as you like. Payments can be made by cheque, payable to Trinity College, cash or credit card. If you are a UK tax payer you will be encouraged to complete a Gift Aid declaration, which will enhance your contribution by 25% at no extra cost to you. Sponsorship or donations can be made on the day, in advance or after the event (any remaining sponsorship opportunities after the event will be displayed on the website). Simply contact Miriam Hallatt on or development@trinity.ox.ac.uk If an item has been completely sponsored before 30 th September an alternative item may be substituted for sponsorship on the night. You will receive an acknowledgement of your donation after the event. We will also acknowledge your generosity further, please see the back cover for more information. If you would prefer your donation to be anonymous, then please let us know at the payment desk when you make your contribution. 2

Bespoke Display Cases At the beginning of 2017 Trinity commissioned seven bespoke exhibition cases from Access Displays Ltd, who specialise in museum-grade glass cases. The aim was to provide attractive and secure display space to replace the range of lecterns and tables previously in the Library. Lockable cases enable rotating displays of library treasures whilst protecting against loss and accidental damage. Enclosed cases also safely accommodate letters, captions and other relevant ephemera which would otherwise be difficult to display. The cases were designed to our specification, with additional advice from the Oxford Conservation Consortium. They feature toughened, anti-glare glass and powder-coated aluminium frames, coloured dark brown to tone with the Library. Donations towards recouping the cost of the cases would be gratefully received. If you sponsor an entire case a metal plate with your name or the name of someone you wish to honour will be attached to the case. Case acquisition costs: Standard display cases (6) each Large case (1)

An Acquisition from the Library of Trinity s Second President Philipp Melanchthon, Initia doctrinae physicae (Wittenberg: Hans Lufft, 1550) Melanchthon ( ) was a German humanist and collaborator of Luther. His importance as a religious reformer has tended to overshadow his achievements as a writer on science, though Initia doctrinae physicae was a widely read treatise on physics throughout the 16 th century. This copy is a second edition, printed a year after the book first appeared. The prime interest of this copy, apart from as an important early scientific text, is that it was originally owned by Arthur Yeldard, the Senior Fellow at the Foundation (1556) and Trinity s second President (1559). The signature Arthurus Yeldardus me emit appears on the title page and a 16-line encomium to Edward VI, in Yeldard s own hand, also appears in the text. Trinity has no other books from Yeldard s library. The Initia is being sold by an American book dealer who purchased it at Bonham s sale of the contents of Lord Harlech s house, where it had resided from the early 19 th century. The volume has been rebound in 19 th -century three-quarter morocco over silk moiré-covered boards, the text block has some damage and staining. The book will be available to view at the Anniversary event. Cost of acquisition:

From the Library of Henry VIII Theophylact, Archbishop of Ohrid, Enarrationes in quattuor evangelia (Basel: [Heirs of Andreas Cratander], 1540) The author, Theophylact (c.1050/60 after 1125), was Archbishop of Ohrid in Bulgaria, and had been tutor to the son of the Byzantine Emperor Michael VII. His main works included a series of commentaries on the New Testament. Theophylact modelled his commentaries on those of John Chrysostom (c ), and was also influenced by Oecumenius. The volume formerly belonged to Henry VIII's library at Greenwich Palace and was probably supplied to Henry by Thomas Berthelet, the King's Printer, around It was later acquired by Sir Thomas Pope, who inscribed his elaborate autograph on the title page. It was among the books Pope gave to Trinity at the College s foundation in A royal binding in alum-tawed skin with Henry VIII s initials incorporated in the gold-tooled decoration, along with the Tudor rose, portcullis, and fleur de lys, so a very fine Henrician binding. It also has Thomas Pope s initials tooled on the spine, and gold painting on the edges. In good condition, the upper inner joint is splitting and must be reinforced to avoid the board becoming detached. There are small areas of damage in the outer leaves which could be stabilised and repaired. The main area of concern is the fine binding which is stained and scratched. This volume should be protected by a cloth box to avoid further damage to the binding. Cost of conservation work: 877 5

Two Important 17 th -century Philosophers Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan (London: for Andrew Crooke, 1651) Leviathan, or The matter, form and power of a Commonwealth, ecclesiastical and civil, is undoubtedly the best known of Hobbes s tracts on political philosophy. It deals with society and legitimate government and is regarded as one of the earliest examples of social contract theory. Trinity s copy is a first edition, which was published in English. A revised Latin text did not appear until In a 17 th -century, full-calf, blind-tooled binding, repaired in the past with leather repair patches over the head/tail caps. The repairs, though functioning, are deteriorating; the tail cap is nearly detached. The third spine panel has lost its leather covering, which has been tucked into the back of the book. The leather titling piece in the second panel is lifting and damaged. Small repairs to the binding will keep it in a stable condition. The text-block is in good condition. Cost of conservation work: 239 John Locke, An essay concerning humane understanding, Book 1. (London: Thomas Basset, 1690) An essay concerning humane understanding is Locke's most famous work. In it, he offers a critique of the philosophy of innate ideas and builds a theory of the mind and knowledge that gives priority to the senses and experience. Locke drafted the Essay, which is made up of 4 books, over a period of about 18 years. Trinity s copy of Book 1 is a first edition. A 17 th -century binding in full calf in fair condition, with the upper board completely detached. The text-block is in good condition. The covering leather is in poor condition and will be difficult to lift on the spine, therefore the upper board should be reattached using internal paper hinges, creating a light repair. 6 Cost of conservation work: 900

17 th -Century Atlas of Great Britain John Speed, The theatre of the empire of Great Britaine: presenting an exact geography of the kingdomes of England, Scotland, Ireland, and the iles adioyning (London: John Sudbury and George Humble, 1614) John Speed (1551/2 1629) is the best known of the Stuart mapmakers and his most influential work was his History of Great Britaine with its accompanying atlas volume, The theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. The theatre was the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale, with the first detailed maps of the provinces of Ireland, the first set of county maps, and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans a notable contribution to British topography. The maps formed the basis for subsequent folio atlases until the mid-18 th century. This copy of The theatre was presented to the college by an Old Member, the late Christopher Davidge (1948). 17 th -century blind-tooled binding in good condition having been repaired by rebacking. Some of the maps have become creased, with edge tears. In some areas the paper is worn and soft, and some resizing would help to consolidate the leaf edges. A book shoe would protect the spine of the book. Cost of conservation work: 169 Oxford in the 17 th Century David Loggan, Oxonia illustrata (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1675) This well-known image of Trinity in 1675 is from Oxonia illustrata. The volume is the work of David Loggan (1635 c.1700) who was born in Danzig. He was appointed Engraver to the University of Oxford in

The book consists of some forty plates: these illustrations include views of colleges and other University buildings, such as the Bodleian Library, and a plan of the city of Oxford. In a beautiful 17 th -century, gold-tooled, full-goatskin binding with the University arms on the upper cover. The binding is worn but in stable condition. The text-block has surface dirt, and several of the plates are torn, creased, etc. The plate of Trinity College is rather battered and has been repaired in the past; it is in need of further work. Cost of conservation work: 339 First English Book on Equine Anatomy Andrew Snape, The Anatomy of an horse. Containing an exact and full description of the frame, situation and connexion of all his parts, (with their actions and uses) exprest in forty-nine copper-plates. (London: M. Flesher, 1683) Andrew Snape was farrier to Charles II and this book is the first on equine anatomy to be written in English. Most of the illustrations are based on the woodcuts from Carlo Ruini s Anatomia del cavallo (1598). Binding is contemporary with the text, a full sprinkled calf. The text-block is in good condition, although with some minor creasing/pleating to the upper/lower endleaves. The joints are worn, and a book shoe is required to support the text-block and boards and prevent serious damage to the binding. Cost of conservation work: 190 8

Hand-coloured Early English Herbal John Gerard, The Herball, enlarged & emended by Thomas Johnson (London: Adam Islip [et al.], 1633) The Renaissance was a golden age for botanists and Gerard s Herball, first published in 1597, was considered one of the best and most exhaustive works of its time, becoming the most widelydistributed English botany book during the 17 th century. The second edition of The Herball, published in 1633 after Gerard s death, was edited by Thomas Johnson, an apothecary and botanist. His edition contained many corrections and new information along with a large number of new illustrations, which are hand-coloured in the Trinity copy. This copy of The Herball was given to Trinity by Dr Henry Glemham (1618), undergraduate, and later Dean of Bristol, and Bishop of St. Asaph. Beautiful hand-coloured text in a contemporary English centrepiece binding with gold tooling. In good condition, but with some small damaged areas to the binding and first/last leaves of the text. The text leaves are creased with some edge tears which should be mended. The binding is structurally sound, but there are areas of minor damage, such as the corners of the upper board, and splitting of the leather along the outer joints. These small areas of damage need to be repaired to prevent further breakdown. Cost of conservation work: 577 9

An Early Publication from Oxford University Press Robert Morison, Plantarum historiae universalis Oxoniensis, pars secunda (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1680) Robert Morison was both a Royal Physician and Professor of Botany under Charles II. In 1669 he was elected first Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford. His appointment may have been in part to advance the reputation of the University Press through the publication of a grand herbal, organized according to his new principles of taxonomy. This second volume, with over 120 plates, was published in The third volume followed in 1699, after Morison s death. Volume one was never published. A 17 th -century blind-tooled full-calf binding, with the lower board detached. The text-block is in good condition, apart from some minor pleating of the first/last leaves, and dirt at the head-edge. The leather covering of the spine, which has deteriorated and is powdery and abraded, will need painstaking treatment before it can be lifted off and the board re-attached. Newton s Influential Scientific Text 10 Cost of conservation work: 1355 Sir Isaac Newton, Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (Cambridge: Cornelius Crownfield, 1713) Newton first published this book, often referred to as the Principia, in In what was considered his greatest work, Newton stated the three universal laws of motion that were not to be improved upon for more than 200 years. Trinity s copy of the Principia is a second edition, published in 1713 with many corrections and amendments, which is now often considered the definitive text.

It was bought with a bequest from Richard Rands, a Trinity Fellow who died in He left 20 a year to buy books for the library, which was its main source of income until the mid-19 th century. In a contemporary blind-tooled binding. The text-block is in good condition with some minor creasing to the endleaves. The upper joint is splitting and the upper board is detached. Internal paper hinges must be used to attach the board without disturbing the spine. Cost of conservation work: 750 Beautifully illustrated 18 th -Century Treatise on Spiders Eleazar Albin, A natural history of spiders, and other curious insects. Illustrated with fifty three copper plates, engraved by the best hands (London: John Tilly [et al.], 1736) Eleazar Albin published several natural histories in the first half of the 18 th century covering birds, insects and fish. Little is known about his life though he described himself as a teacher of water-colour who was attracted to natural history by the colours of plants and animals. In this first edition Albin writes: Each particular species of this little insect (of which I have with great pains and labour collected near 200) is here represented...beautified in its proper colours. The book ends with essays on other creatures including lice and scorpions, taken from the writings of Robert Hooke and the epidemiologist Richard Mead. 11

In a contemporary full-calf binding, with waste paper used for endleaves, which has been masked by marbling. The volume has a break in the centre of the spine and the spine leather is very deteriorated. The upper flyleaf is detached, as is the upper board, making this volume hard to consult or exhibit. The text-block is in good condition and is beautifully printed and hand coloured. The spine must be lifted and the split repaired, and the upper flyleaf and board reattached. Cost of conservation work: 1250 General Conservation Work and Collection Care in the Libraries Trinity is a member of Oxford Conservation Consortium (OCC), which was established in 1990 by four colleges to provide collection care services for rare and historic library and archive materials. Today there are 15 member colleges and 8 conservators. OCC works with colleges to repair, preserve, document and make accessible their rare books and archives. The conservators also advise on environmental monitoring, pest management and disaster planning. Jane Eagan, ACR FIIC, OCC s Head Conservator, will be attending the Anniversary event to show some of the work that has already been undertaken for Trinity. All donors to the event will also be invited to the Consortium s studio for a demonstration of conservation work (see back cover for more details). Sponsorship of conservation materials: We always need general conservation and display equipment for the libraries including the following, more information and examples of which will be on display at the Anniversary event: Board book boxes average cost 15 Book shoes average cost 20 Cloth boxes cost of made to measure 390 Foam book supports (pictured) cost of a medium set 40 12

Cataloguing the Danson Library Antiquarian Collections Although most of the books in the Old Library have been catalogued to Oxford standards, few of the books in the Danson Library have a complete catalogue record. This means that we are not aware of the full content of the Library, compromising the security of the books. Cataloguing a book to the Oxford rare books cataloguing standard involves creating a full description of an ideal copy of the book and then adding information specific to the copy of the book in hand (e.g. binding, bookplates, hand-coloured illustrations, imperfections, manuscript additions, and provenance information). The resulting record, rich in unique information of interest to scholars, is fully searchable via the Oxford University online catalogue, both within Oxford and internationally via the Internet Trinity is fortunate to have engaged Alison Felstead, MCLIP, rare books cataloguer (and ex-trinity Librarian), to undertake detailed cataloguing of the collection. The following collections, shelved in the Danson Library, are available for sponsorship: Danson Bequest Erotica: 518 works of erotica, many of them very rare, from the Danson bequest. The publication dates span the 15 th 20 th centuries and the collection is of significant interest from a social history perspective. Cataloguing cost: 6,250 Arthur Rackham Illustrated Books: 46 books with illustrations by Arthur Rackham from the Danson bequest, chiefly limited edition deluxe copies signed by Rackham and dating from the early 20 th -century. Cataloguing cost: 570 Edgar Wind Bequest: 26 books, primarily antiquarian, selected for Trinity from the estate of Edgar Wind, the first Oxford University Professor of the History of Art. Cataloguing cost:

Existing Benefactors Book Old Library Benefactors Books Benefactions to the library, of money or books, were noted in the Old Library Benefactors Book from the early 17 th late 19 th centuries. This invaluable volume now resides in the Archive and is regularly consulted. It requires some conservation work to stabilise it for long-term use. 17 th -century reverse calf binding, with blind tooling and intact library chain staple. The upper endleaf is of music manuscript waste and the lower is a bifolium from a 14 th -century illuminated manuscript. The head/tail caps are missing and damaged, and the upper outer joint is splitting from the tail. The head and tail panels should be repaired/stabilised to prevent the boards detaching Cost of conservation work: 169 New Benefactors Book This book, commissioned from bookbinder and conservator Victoria Stevens, ACR, will continue the college tradition by marking all recent and forthcoming donations and benefactions to the Old and Danson Libraries The text will be entered by calligrapher Colin Dunn of Scriptura. Book proposal: A4 size, landscape format book, hand sewn archival quality plain paper textblock with full goatskin binding in dark blue. Tooling title to the upper board, fillet line on outside and inside of upper board. Sewn endbands and plain endleaves. The book may be temporarily stored in a plain binding with detachable sections which facilitate easier calligraphy. Sections will be hand sewn into the final binding after calligraphy has been completed. 14 Cost of Benefactors Book: 500

Information for donors Every donor to the Old Library Anniversary event will be named in the Old Library Benefactors Book, commissioned from binder and conservator Victoria Stevens, ACR (see page 14). Donors sponsoring more than 50% of the conservation or acquisition costs of a book will be named on a specially commissioned bookplate which will remain with the book in perpetuity. A blank bookplate is shown opposite. Wording on the bookplate can commemorate a personal donation, or be in honour or memory of a named individual or institution. Sponsorship of the entire cost of a display case will be marked with a metal name-plate for the donor on the case. Every donor at the event will receive a personal invitation for a group visit to the Oxford Conservation Consortium studios at Grove Cottage, St. Cross Road to view the work of the conservators in action. Proposed dates for the visits, which will be during 2018, will be sent out later. Thank you for your support of this event and the fundraising for the Old Library during the 600 th Anniversary year.
