6 Preface The Hawaiian Journal of History has been a staple of the Hawaiian Historical Society's publishing program since volume one was issued in From 1892, the year the Society was founded, to 1967, historical articles were published in the Society's Annual Reports and in a Paper series. Richard A. Greer, the first editor of the Journal, gives an account of its beginnings in the Notes & Queries section of the Journal, volume 31 (1997). The Journal is devoted to the history of Hawai'i, Polynesia, and the Pacific area, and its mission is to make original research material available to the membership and to the general public. Today the Journal enjoys an international readership and is recognized as a primary source for research articles about Hawai'i's history. The Journal continues to be issued once each year and contains articles, historical illustrations, book reviews, and a selected bibliography of titles of historical interest. Articles in the Journal are peer-reviewed by an editorial board. The editorial work is done by this board and the Journal editor, all of whom are volunteers. They have contributed their knowledge and expertise over many years to provide a continuing resource for us to learn about and appreciate Hawai'i's rich and interesting history. 8 Introduction THE PRESENT INDEX is a compilation of three earlier indexes, covering the first twenty-five volumes of The Hawaiian Journal of History, with the addition of new entries covering volumes 26 through 35. The fundamental approach to indexing the journal has remained the same throughout this thirty-five year span. Efforts have been made to include all personal names and all ship names mentioned in the journal. In some cases, this has meant citation of individuals by surname only, with, where possible, some identifying information, as in entries such as Brown (resident, 1847) or Smith (ship captain). It is hoped that even this fragmentary information may be of help to researchers. The treatment of Hawaiian and Chinese names often presents problems to the indexer oriented to Western surnames and family systems. In the nineteenth century, names were often distorted by being reversed or appended in various ways to European forms of names. Where no recognized standard exists, we have made liberal use of cross references to assist the searcher. In the case of Chinese names, we have used the form in the index of Clarence E. Glick's Sojourners and Settlers: Chinese Migrants to Hawaii (Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 1980). Numbers in bold type refer to volume numbers, and the remaining numbers indicate pages. For example, the entry Ariyoshi, George R. (governor of Hawai'i), 11:169; 14:92; 19:5,6,10 refers to material on this subject in volume 11 at page 169, volume 14 at page 92, and volume 19 at pages 5,6, and 10.
